Ten Years Later, Guerrilla Admits It’s ‘Done’ With Killzone

As a gamer who grew up with the gritty intensity of Killzone, hearing that Guerrilla Games has moved on from the franchise feels like a gut punch. The first-person shooter series was my gateway drug into the world of FPS games and the multiplayer combat that followed. I spent countless hours immersed in its alt-universe, building friendships, and honing my skills.

One could contend that it was Guerrilla Games who were shaped by the creation of Killzone. This gritty, alternative reality first-person shooter was first unveiled in 2004 on PlayStation 2, offering a groundbreaking setting and narrative for a next-generation game. It birthed four significant sequels and a few spin-offs, but since 2013, the series has been left untouched by Guerrilla Games.

One popular choice for rejuvenating an abandoned series is often considered to be Killzone, but during a recent interview, the Guerrilla team clarified that they have already completed their work on this franchise.

‘It Was By Choice’

In the year 2017, Guerrilla Games introduced Horizon Zero Dawn, an exclusive title for PlayStation 4 that left people amazed. It was full of color and energy, showcasing a vast world brimming with potential and liberty. This game marked their first project since 2013’s Killzone Shadow Fall, which had been criticized heavily and was seen as the end for the shooter series by many.

In a recent interview, it’s been disclosed that Horizon Zero Dawn signifies the conclusion of Killzone, as Guerrilla Games is now shifting entirely from their intense first-person shooter genre towards exploring brighter and diverse landscapes – unintentionally playing on words.

As a team, we had concluded our work on it. From a studio perspective, there was a need to revitalize our color scheme. By design, it diverged from the Killzone series. I believe that the themes this narrative and its characters convey – such as forming a chosen family among friends and discovering one’s place in life – resonate universally with individuals of all ages.

This was a quote taken from Roy Postma, a Guerrilla legend with more than two decades at the firm. He was talking to the Washington Post about Lego Horizon Adventures, a cutesy version of Horizon set to launch in just a couple of weeks.

The phrase “done with it” struck a chord deep within me. Killzone was among the initial games that ignited my passion as a child, a game I invested countless hours into. It was my gateway to the realm of first-person shooters and multiplayer FPS combat. I had always considered the resurgence of this series an extremely rare opportunity, but now, seeing it officially confirmed on paper, is truly extraordinary.
