TenZ Criticises Riot for Using Lower-End PCs During VCT Competitions

As a long-time fan and follower of Valorant esports, I completely empathize with TenZ’s frustration towards Riot’s use of lower-end PCs during their premier competitions. Having watched Counter-Strike pros back in the day, I recall how their setups were always top-notch, equipped with the best CPUs, GPUs, and high refresh rate monitors. It’s disheartening to see Riot, a successful gaming company, not investing enough in their competitive scene by providing subpar equipment.

More recently, Tyson ‘TenZ’ Ngo, a well-known Valorant esports player representing Sentinels, voiced his displeasure towards Riot on Twitch. He criticized Riot for utilizing less powerful computers during major tournaments such as VCT, implying that if he as an individual can afford better equipment, then certainly Riot should be able to do the same.

During a recent Twitch broadcast, I (TenZ) voiced my confusion over Riot’s stance on equipping lower-end PCs for competitions. It reminds me of my days as a Counter-Strike pro, where we had top-tier CPUs, GPUs, and monitors with the highest refresh rates at our disposal. I can’t help but question their reasoning behind this decision.

The CS Pro, who previously worked for Riot, explains that instead of using top-of-the-line monitors, Riot uses monitors that are a few generations older and not commonly found in the market. He acknowledges the expense of buying high-end PCs, but if Riot has the funds on hand, then they should be able to afford it according to the Sentinels player.

TenZ expresses his concern that Riot Games has neglected addressing a long-standing issue in the esports community. He is convinced that Riot uses identical computers for both Valorant and League of Legends competitions to save costs. Although League can function on less powerful hardware, Valorant requires more advanced specifications. Thus, TenZ believes that Riot may be economizing by using the same equipment for both games.

As a passionate gamer, I recently shared my thoughts on a YouTube video, expressing that my concerns aren’t about making excuses, but rather using the platform I have as a competitor to voice opinions that matter not just for me, but all players in these events. I believe the top-tier players should be equipped with the best gear; it’s simply a fact. Moreover, I expressed my feelings that Riot Games, given their significant revenue from this game, seem to invest only the bare minimum into the esports scene. It feels like they could do so much more to support us players and grow the competitive side of their game.
