As a seasoned gamer with memories of countless disappointing movie-based video games etched into my gaming history, I must say that the recent news about Nacon delaying Terminator: Survivors to 2025 has filled me with a sense of cautious optimism.

Developer Nacon, responsible for creating Terminator: Survivors, has delayed the initial release of the game on both consoles and PC, with a tentative launch scheduled for an undisclosed year in 2025.

In a message about project X, the studio shared with fans that they aim to carefully craft a game that aligns with your high standards, placing great importance on ensuring it’s of top-notch quality rather than rushing the release.

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, I’m genuinely impressed by Nacon’s approach. Instead of rushing out an incomplete game, they chose to perfect it first, then release patches later. It’s refreshing to see this becoming a trend in modern gaming.

Resistance, is often seen as an ordinary shooting game but has a compelling atmosphere that mirrors the original films. Although its gameplay could use improvement, the narrative and tone have garnered Nacon respect from fans of the Terminator franchise.”

In the sequel titled “Terminator: Survivors“, the story unfolds a couple of years after Judgment Day. This game offers an open-world survival experience, where players scavenge for resources, engage in combat, and construct bases amidst the devastation wrought by Skynet. Throughout their journey, they are pursued relentlessly by a T-800 model reminiscent of the Nemesis from “Resident Evil“.

Movie-based Video Games Are Good Now, Sometimes

Terminator: Survivors Delayed to 2025

At one point, the delay of the Terminator game would’ve made fans long for its cancellation rather than an actual launch date. However, that’s no longer the case.

In the realm of video game development, it’s no longer implausible to craft an outstanding game based on a movie, whether it’s the nerve-wracking late-night scenes from ‘Friday the 13th’, the terrifying corridors of ‘Alien Isolation’, or the relatively ordinary Australian setting of ‘Mad Max’. The key lies in not forcing the narrative to adhere strictly to the movie’s canon and instead focusing on telling an authentic story.

For the first time since 2008, the top-selling video game of 2023 was not one from the Call of Duty, FIFA, or Madden series. Instead, it was Hogwarts Legacy that took the crown, selling an impressive 22 million copies.

Despite some initial setbacks with delays and a sprinkling of controversy upon launch, I must admit that it surpassed its rivals in sales figures.

Recent victories don’t necessarily imply that movie-based video games represent a solved formula for studios. For every hit like “Alien Isolation”, there is a flop such as “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”. Although one generated massive earnings, the other led to a 41% decline in Warner Bros’ game revenue.

Nacon demonstrates their familiarity with the Terminator series and their commitment to quality by being prepared to postpone sales, ensuring that additional development time can be invested. However, it’s uncertain whether this delay will ultimately lead to an improved game or if it might disappoint fans in the end.
