Terrifier 3 - This Major Character Death Should Be Retconned

Key Takeaways

  • Fans and critics loved Terrifier 3, but Jonathan’s off-screen death has divided the audience.
  • The supposed death of Jonathan should be retconned in the upcoming sequel to bring him back.
  • Jonathan’s death lacked build-up and proof, leading fans to believe it was a fake-out by the filmmakers.

As a long-time fan of the Terrifier series, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment about the fate of my favorite supporting character, Jonathan. Don’t get me wrong, I love the over-the-top gore and the terrifying Art the Clown, but Jonathan was the heart of the franchise – the character we could all root for. His supposed death in Terrifier 3 left me feeling a bit like I had just missed the final scene of The Empire Strikes Back, you know, where Luke loses his hand? But instead of a cool silver prosthetic, we got… well, nothing.

In its inaugural month, the release of Terrifier 3 has left a significant impact on global box offices, even outranking Joker: Folie à deux in its initial week. The character Art The Clown has solidified his status as a horror legend, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the greats. Audience and critics have shown appreciation for director Damien Leone’s second sequel, however, one specific death of a character has sparked debate among fans. The demise of beloved character Jonathan, brother to final girl Sienna, was portrayed off-screen, leaving many feeling unsettled due to its execution.

Fans of Elliott Fullam’s character Jonathan from Terrifier 3 believe his death on screen might not sit well with them, but skipping over his actual demise feels unusual. Instead, there are suggestions that the entire death scene should be rewritten or erased (retconned), allowing for Jonathan to potentially make a comeback in the sequel, which has already been confirmed to be in development.

In the intense climax of Terrifier 3, the cruelty inflicted upon Sienna by Art the Clown and Vicky Heyes reaches an alarming peak. These two malevolent figures, steeped in supernatural evil, opt to unwrap their Christmas gifts – a tradition that takes on a sinister twist when practiced by these two psychopathic killers. The presents, of course, conceal something grotesque: a cage filled with rats devouring a skull. An unsettling sight, even for them. Initially, they deceive Sienna, claiming the rat’s latest meal is her friend Gabbie’s head. However, their cruelty escalates when they ultimately reveal that it is actually her brother, Jonathan, wearing his signature glasses on the skull.

As the storyline suggests, prior to what seemed like Jonathan’s demise, Sienna had managed to persuade him that Art the Clown was still among the living, planning a comeback to Miles County. Their uncle was supposedly arranging for his pick-up. However, we’re left in the dark about the details of what happened to Jonathan, as it transpired off-screen. There are several theories: perhaps he was abducted, or maybe he misplaced his glasses while fleeing from Art the Clown and Vicky, or possibly he met a grim end, which could mark the end of the road for this character.

Jonathan’s Death Should Be Retconned Or Revealed To Be A Fake Out In Terrifier 4

The strange manner of Jonathan’s death raises questions since there was no indication he was in immediate danger prior to his supposed demise. While Art the Clown has been shown killing his roommate Cole and girlfriend Mia in the Terrifier series, there’s no concrete evidence suggesting the same for Jonathan. If indeed Jonathan is deceased, it would be an unexpected twist for a character so beloved by fans of the horror franchise. The possibility that this could be a clever misdirection by director Damien Leone, and Jonathan might still be alive, remains strong among viewers.

Terrifier 3 - This Major Character Death Should Be Retconned

In light of Art and Vicky having previously deceived about the skull belonging to Gabbie, it seems highly improbable, if not impossible, for them also to have lied about its connection to Jonathan. Therefore, should Jonathan indeed have met his demise off-screen, it might be prudent to reconsider this ending in Terrifier 4, providing fans another chance to engage with him. If he does resurface, his death ought to be depicted on-screen this time around, as it seemed that Jonathan was somewhat sidelined in Terrifier 3 due to being away at college. This raises questions about the authenticity of his ‘death,’ and it appears increasingly likely that we’ll see him again in the next installment.
