As a longtime horror movie enthusiast and a diehard fan of the Terrifier franchise, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the announcement of Terrifier: The ARTcade Game! Growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, I spent countless hours at arcades playing beat-em-ups like Battletoads, Streets of Rage, Double Dragon, and Splatterhouse. To see these influences come together in a game that ties into one of my favorite horror franchises is nothing short of a dream come true!

As a gamer, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming video game tie-in for the horror movie “Terrifier”! Named “Terrifier: The ARTcade Game”, this intriguing new project is being developed specifically for the PlayStation 5 and PC. The innovative meta concept has me on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting its release to immerse myself in the chilling world of Art the Clown!

Although the first Terrifier movie premiered in 2016, the slasher film franchise created by Damien Leone dates back to the 2006 short film The 9th Circle, which was the first to introduce Art the Clown. This terrifying villain with a propensity for gruesome murder later went on to appear in the 2013 anthology movie All Hallows’ Eve before Mike Giannelli retired from acting. The role then went to David Howard Thornton, who portrayed Art the Clown in Terrifier and its 2022 sequel, the latter of which earned $15.7 million on a $250,000 budget.

Terrifier: The ARTcade Game Coming in 2025

On the same day as the grand premiere of the more daring sequel Terrifier 3, which takes place in U.S. theaters today, October 11, the announcement was made for the upcoming game entitled Terrifier: The ARTcade Game. This project is being developed at a studio based in Bilbao, Spain – Relevo. Described as a beat-em-up inspired by classic ’80s and ’90s arcade games such as Battletoads, Streets of Rage, Double Dragon, and Splatterhouse, the game is now available for wishlisting on Steam, with plans for a release on the PS5 as well. The publisher, SelectaPlay (a label under Spanish multimedia distributor SelectaVision), has set its sights on a 2025 release for this beat-em-up, although pricing details have yet to be disclosed.

Terrifier: The ARTcade Game Has a Meta Premise

In this game, players take on the role of Art the Clown, a notorious villain, and cause chaos by sabotaging film sets based on his numerous criminal acts. The game’s premise is quite self-referential. Throughout the game, Art terrorizes various individuals from camera operators to police officers, using a diverse collection of weapons, power-ups, and gruesome finishers. Each level will also feature a challenging boss battle designed to test the player’s skills. Along the way, players will face numerous foes, adding to the overall difficulty of the game.

In the game The ARTcade Game, it’s expected to have a pixel art design. However, the promotional content released by SelectaPlay hints at its violent scenes being as intense and bloody as those seen in the Terrifier films. Besides playing levels individually, players can join forces with up to three friends for a local cooperative play. The beat-em-up offers around six game modes, providing sessions of different durations, from brief skirmishes to lengthy trials.

In more recent times, Relevo’s upcoming game is going to be the second video game venture for Terrifier. Interestingly, the character Art the Clown has been given a Call of Duty Operator pack to help advertise the launch of Terrifier 3.
