As a gamer, I’d say stepping into the role of a dad is like diving headfirst into an epic RPG with multiple paths and challenges. Like any character in this game, we’re significant figures shaping our own story, impacting little lives for better or worse. The quests, responsibilities, and challenges can be tough and overwhelming at times; it’s a game where the stakes are real-life emotions and growth. Every family is different, which means every dad plays this game differently – some may choose the path of patience and understanding, while others might struggle in extreme circumstances. But no matter what, we’re all trying to level up as best we can, learning from our mistakes and growing stronger with each passing day.
In horror video games, the role of the father is intriguing; the genre has depicted both dreadful fathers and those who would brave even the ends of the earth for their children. Consequently, games that delve into the theme of fatherhood in horror have also explored themes such as regret, sorrow, and a strong desire to protect – sometimes encompassing all three. This collection highlights some top picks in this category.
The game “Heavy Rain” isn’t part of this list because it doesn’t typically fall under the horror genre. Yet, it’s worth noting that it should get special recognition due to its intense crime drama storyline and exploration of complex father-son dynamics.
10. Siren: Blood Curse
Coming Face To Face With The Extraterrestrial
Title “Siren: Blood Curse” is the third installment in the “Siren” (also known as “Forbidden Siren” in certain regions) series. The game features a multi-character perspective and intricately woven narratives, with Sam, a folklore professor, being one of them. Upon taking his daughter, Bella, to Japan for work, he unwittingly gets entangled in the mysterious supernatural activities occurring on the island.
Regardless of the chaotic circumstances surrounding him, Sam remains steadfast in his mission to find Bella. Amidst encounters with time paradoxes, malevolent gods, and hexes, Sam perseveres, doing whatever necessary to protect their child.
9. Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs
One Of The Most Tragic Amnesia Games
The Amnesia series has introduced some morally ambiguous main characters, ranging from ruthless killers to cold-blooded mass murderers. However, A Machine for Pigs offers a unique perspective by delving into the heartwrenching tale of a father’s relentless determination to rescue his offspring. Although it may be difficult to empathize with these characters, their stories are intricately woven and emotionally engaging.
The game narrates the story of Oswald Mandus, an elite businessman turned butcher, who encounters terrifying creatures resembling pigs, known as Manpigs, that appear determined to bring about human extinction. As you progress through the game, you regain your memory and realize your own involvement in the turmoil, uncovering the morally ambiguous lengths you were prepared to go to shield your children from a dreadful future.
8. Visage
Is It Possible To Overcome The Past?
The game, titled “Visage,” is a psychological horror experience that immerses you in the perspective of troubled protagonist Dwayne Anderson, leading you through his suburban home where you witness the grim endings of its previous residents. As a player, you’ll face harrowing encounters and strive to escape from the terrifying loops inspired by the acclaimed game “P.T.
Though the game doesn’t seem to be directly about parenthood at first glance, Dwayne eventually grapples with the past of his family, including his role in it. There are usually two conclusions, one positive and one negative, depending on the player’s decision at the end that ultimately shapes the outcome.
7. The Evil Within 2
Willing To Embark On A Dangerous Rescue Mission
Three years following the initial game, “The Evil Within 2” begins by illustrating the profound impact that the loss of his daughter, Lily, has had on Sebastian. Struggling with alcoholism now, he receives an opportunity to confront his past when his former detective partner reappears, disclosing that Lily is indeed still alive.
In “The Evil Within 2”, the character Sebastian takes on a perilous mission to free his daughter Lily from the grip of the ruthless biotech corporation, Mobius. The game portrays Sebastian’s determination as a father to face his personal demons and navigate through power struggles among the mad and grotesque creatures, all in an effort to save his beloved child.
6. The Forest
A Survival Game With A Much Darker Narrative
At first glance, The Forest appears to be just another survival game. However, it offers a unique adventure as you play as Eric, a survivor of a plane crash, exploring the mysteries of the forested island he finds himself on. The elements of base-building, crafting, and health maintenance create an engaging experience that is enjoyable in its own right.
Beyond just survival gameplay, there’s a deeper, more ominous storyline in play. In this case, Eric’s son, Timmy, has been abducted. To locate him, players must traverse treacherous landscapes and encounter hostile islanders who practice cannibalism. While following the main plot is not strictly necessary, The Forest remains a deeply unsettling adventure.
5. Dead Rising 2
No Zombie Will Stand Between Father And Daughter
Despite the enjoyable, bloodthirsty combat characteristic of the Dead Rising series, these games also boast in-depth narratives that keep players engaged. In Dead Rising 2, the story follows Chuck Greene, a man caught up in a mass outbreak of zombies during an underground event featuring zombie slaughter.
As a devoted fan, I find myself drawn into the gripping tale of Chuck Greene, who’s juggling the harrowing task of clearing his name amidst an outbreak, all while safeguarding his precious daughter, Katey. She’s infected and requires the life-saving drug Zombrex to preserve her humanity. In this thrilling narrative, Chuck assumes the roles of investigator, savior, and parent, making him a compelling hero and a surprisingly deep protagonist in the world of zombie apocalypse video games.
4. The Last Of Us Part 1
An Attachment That Could Shape The World’s Future
In simple terms, “The Last of Us” is widely acclaimed, mainly due to its captivating storyline and deeply developed characters. “The Last of Us Part 1” centers around Joel, a smuggler, who aims to escort Ellie, a girl immune to a deadly fungal infection, to the Fireflies in an attempt to develop a cure that could save humanity from the brink of destruction caused by this zombie-like outbreak.
Throughout the progression of the game, their connection deepens into a relationship reminiscent of a father and daughter, a bond that becomes significant later when Joel encounters a critical decision that could alter the world. The intricate portrayal of relationships in Part 1, particularly Joel’s role as a father figure, stirs strong emotions among players.
3. The Walking Dead
High Stakes And High Tensions
The Walking Dead is an engaging drama and episodic horror video game set shortly after a zombie apocalypse. It stands out due to its impactful storylines and challenging decisions that players must make, which, with multiple narrative paths, significantly influence the course of their gaming experience.
In these extraordinary circumstances, unusual family structures emerge, and “The Walking Dead” skillfully delves into the ways survivors cope with the outbreak. There’s an abundance of scenes featuring fathers ready to battle for their loved ones, going to any lengths necessary. At times, they choose to trust no one; at others, they band together – yet their decisions are mostly driven by love.
2. Silent Hill
The Lengths A Father Will Go To For His Daughter
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but acknowledge the profound impact of Harry Mason in horror gaming. My personal journey with him began in the chilling world of the original Silent Hill game, where he sets out on a heart-wrenching quest to locate his missing adopted daughter, Cheryl, following a harrowing car accident. However, this seemingly straightforward mission quickly transforms into an arduous odyssey, as the twisted town of Silent Hill presents a labyrinth of horrors that challenge him at every turn.
One reason Harry Mason stands out is that he’s an ordinary individual, not a cop, FBI agent, or military veteran. This makes it effortless for players to cheer him on as he struggles against adversity. Battling terrifying monsters and unveiling the depths of Silent Hill’s darkness, Harry persists undauntedly in his quest to find his daughter.
1. Resident Evil Village
Facing The Nightmare All Over Again
In Resident Evil Village, Ethan Winters appears to have found tranquility with his wife and newborn, but this peaceful life is shattered when they’re kidnapped. Consequently, Ethan is compelled to embark on a perilous journey yet again, with the objective of rescuing his loved ones from danger.
This occasion demands that Ethan confronts the four lords from the Village, who are all under the control of Mother Miranda, the head of the Cult of the Black God. Plunged into a shady mission, Ethan never wavers in his resolve. Despite being tossed about like a plaything and suffering injuries such as losing a hand once more, or getting bitten repeatedly, it’s evident that Ethan will go to any lengths to retrieve his child. Such persistence deserves him the title of Father of the Year.
