Introduction
The strategy game genre is thriving, and 2026 has already been a great year with the release of titles like Strategos, Task Force Admiral, and MENACE. With so many strategy games being released, the selection keeps getting better. I’ve explored this vast collection and chosen 10 hidden gems – underrated strategy games that I highly recommend checking out, whether you’re looking to buy them or already have them in your collection.

10 – Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy

I’ve rarely been so immersed in a wargame as I have with Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy. It’s the most realistic WWII Normandy combat simulation available in gaming, putting you in command of every squad and vehicle. The game boasts incredibly accurate ballistics and armor calculations, tons of scenarios for both sides, and a user-friendly map editor. Five substantial expansions add even more content, including British and Commonwealth forces and the Market Garden operation, making it a top-tier game set during World War II. If WWII isn’t your preference, the Combat Mission series offers other options – Black Sea and Shock Force 2 bring the same detailed gameplay to modern conflicts.
9 – Battle of Empires 1914-1918

Let me share something interesting. Battle of Empires 1914-1918 was actually one of the first things I ever wrote! It’s amazing to think it’s been five years since I completed the game. And when I say ‘completed,’ I mean I played through all the main campaigns for each major nation – it took me a couple of weeks! If you’re a fan of single-player strategy games, especially those set during World War I, and you’re looking for a great real-time strategy experience, this game – which builds on the Men of War style – is the best choice in 2026.
8 – Phantom Brigade
I really wanted to love Phantom Brigade when it first came out. It had everything I look for in a strategy game – think XCOM, but with awesome graphics, a cool art style, and tons of mechs! But honestly, it just didn’t click for me, and it felt kinda dull. Thankfully, the developers didn’t give up! They released a huge, free update in November 2025, and it completely changed the game. Seriously, it’s like a whole new experience now. They rebuilt the campaign map with new areas, quests, and a system that creates fresh missions all the time. They also added a pilot system where you can recruit pilots with over 100 different skills and traits, which adds a whole new level of strategy. Honestly, after that update, Phantom Brigade became one of the best turn-based strategy games out there. It’s amazing what a little extra work can do!
