Open-world games will continue to be incredibly popular in 2026, just as they have been for the past ten years. Whether you enjoy them or not, they’re now a staple of both big-budget and independent game development. Each month brings a variety of these expansive games, including challenging survival titles, immersive role-playing games, and laid-back simulation experiences.

It’s impossible to cover every open-world game coming out in 2026, but a few are already looking like must-play titles. These games are expected to be both huge releases and among the best of the year. While the release schedule is still subject to change, if all goes according to plan, these open-world games will likely be the highlights of 2026.

I’m mostly focusing on games that actually have release dates right now, but I’ll throw in a few that are aiming for 2026 just to give you a heads-up on what’s coming down the pipeline.

This article focuses on games releasing after March 28, 2026. While I enjoy titles like Nioh 3 and Crimson Desert, I’ve chosen to only include upcoming games, not those already available.

1. Grand Theft Auto 6

No matter what type of game you usually enjoy, GTA 6 is predicted to be the biggest release of 2026, provided Rockstar Games launches it in November as planned. While the release date has been delayed before, Rockstar appears optimistic about hitting the end-of-year target.

It promises a huge, expansive world featuring several cities and areas, including a return to the iconic Vice City. Like past installments, GTA 6 will combine a funny, often critical look at society with a compelling crime story, this time focusing on two bank robbers whose plans go awry. 2. Forza Horizon 6

The Forza Horizon series has consistently delivered fantastic open-world experiences for about ten years, and the developers haven’t disappointed yet. The next installment should keep that streak going, and it’s already confirmed to have a much larger map than any previous game.

Welcome to Japan! Explore a land of incredible contrasts, from peaceful countryside to bustling cities, and discover hidden secrets within the most detailed map Horizon has ever created.

The upcoming Forza Horizon 6 will feature the biggest city ever seen in the series, and based on past games, Tokyo City will be incredibly realistic. Beyond that, FH6 promises beautiful scenery, over 550 cars, enhanced audio, and a campaign where you gradually build your collection and reputation, rather than instantly becoming a top driver.

3. Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight

The Biggest Open-World Superhero Game Confirmed For 2026

Traveller’s Tales is launching a new Lego game, and this one might be their biggest yet. While the previous game had some problems, the Lego Batman series is generally solid, though always with room to grow. This time, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight focuses entirely on Batman, unlike earlier titles that felt more like Justice League games. You’ll only be able to play as seven characters connected to Batman and his world. The game features a brand new story inspired by Batman’s history in comics, movies, TV shows, and other video games.

Are you ready to build the legacy of the Dark Knight and protect Gotham City?

Drawing inspiration from the combat system of the acclaimed Arkham series and featuring a detailed, explorable Gotham City, Legacy of the Dark Knight has the potential to be the best Batman game of the 2020s. At the very least, it promises to be a fun and fitting tribute to the iconic character.

The Biggest Open-World Game That Should Enter Early Access In 2026

According to Steam’s wishlists, Subnautica 2 is currently the most eagerly awaited game scheduled for release in 2026. This excitement is well-deserved, given the success of the developer Unknown Worlds’ previous games. While Below Zero was enjoyable, the original Subnautica is considered one of the best first-person survival games ever made, and many believe it’s the greatest underwater game of all time. The new Subnautica 2 aims to build on the foundation of the acclaimed 2018 release, offering players a brand new planet to explore, more in-depth crafting options, diverse environments, frightening new creatures, and the ability to play with up to three friends in co-op.

This alien ocean world is full of stunning and varied landscapes, from huge underwater cliffs to colorful coral reefs. Each area is a thriving ecosystem, home to a wide range of incredible creatures.

While Subnautica 2 sounds amazing, things became difficult for Unknown Worlds in the latter half of 2025. Krafton, the parent company, changed the studio’s leadership, and there was even a lawsuit filed against them. On top of that, Krafton announced it was focusing heavily on artificial intelligence, which didn’t inspire confidence about the game’s future.

Despite any current challenges, Subnautica 2 is expected to be one of the most popular open-world games of 2026, and the developers aim to release a polished early access version.

5. Paralives

A 2026 Life Sim With The Potential To Be Great

Life simulation games are popular, but players are still hoping for one that can truly compete with or even exceed The Sims. Paralives generated a lot of excitement when it was first announced over five years ago. It was originally planned for early access in mid-2025, but has been delayed several times after receiving feedback from playtesting. While these delays might seem concerning, the developer’s choice to postpone shows they’re committed to making a high-quality game and are willing to improve based on player input.

Paralives is being developed by a small, new team, so it’s best to be realistic about what to expect. While the idea of a fresh life simulation game with an open world, romance, careers, home building, and families sounds fantastic, let’s wait to see more of the game before getting too excited. It’s important to avoid setting expectations too high and potentially being let down.

Paralives enters early access in May 2026, so the full release probably won’t happen this year.

6. Fable

The Long-Awaited Return To Albion Should Finally Happen In 2026

Do you remember when the Fable games were incredibly popular? Between 2004 and 2010, the series on Xbox, created by Lionhead Studios, released two much-loved role-playing games, one that divided opinion, plus a few spin-off titles and updates. While the games didn’t always live up to the hype promised by Peter Molyneux, they were incredibly charming and still hold up well today. After Microsoft closed Lionhead and Fable 3 turned ten without any news of a true sequel, it seemed like the Fable franchise was over. Luckily, that wasn’t the case! A brand new game – a reboot and continuation of the story – is now expected to be released in 2026.

Step into a vast, open-world RPG and become the hero you’ve always imagined. Your decisions truly matter, influencing the story and how others see you. But be warned – this isn’t a simple tale, and a happy ending isn’t promised.

The team at Playground Games, known for the Forza Horizon series, is developing the new game, which feels like a natural fit, yet also a bit unexpected. They’re experts at creating gorgeous, realistic open worlds, and fans can hope for the same level of detail in the game’s setting of Albion. While the exact gameplay is still a mystery, it’s expected to include more robust combat, meaningful player choices, a morality system, a way to build your reputation, and social interactions like romance – all of which sound very promising.

7. Solarpunk

A Cozy Game That Will Kickstart Your Van Life

Thanks to support from Kickstarter, Outbound is a great game to unwind with when you need to de-stress and escape. Instead of a fantastical world, it’s set in a hopeful near-future with a cozy autumn vibe, a stylish but realistic look, and vibrant colors.

I’m really excited about this game, Outbound! The basic idea is you hop in your van and just… go! You drive around, see cool places, check out new areas, and even customize your van to make it your own. Plus, you can get a pet, which honestly makes any game better. The developers, Square Glade Games, released a demo on February 17th, 2026, so if you’re not sure if it’s for you, I definitely recommend trying it out!

9. Witchbrook

The Biggest Open-World Indie Game Coming In 2026

Seriously, who doesn’t dream of going to magic school? I’ve been following Witchbrook for ages, and it looks like we might finally get to enroll in 2026! It’s a full-on life sim where you actually go to school to learn magic and become part of the town of Mossport. I’m already picturing myself hitting up festivals, grabbing a bite to eat, checking out the shops, and even hitting the arcade – it sounds like the perfect way to spend an afternoon. And hey, maybe I’ll even find a little magic in the romance department too!

I’m really hoping to make some awesome friends and unforgettable memories in this game. And, hey, maybe even find a little romance with one of the interesting characters you can get to know – who knows what could happen!

Chucklefish hasn’t announced when Witchbrook will be released, but they’re aiming for sometime this year. If the game lives up to the hype, it has the potential to be one of the best indie games of 2026.

10. The Blood of Dawnwalker

From The Director of The Witcher 3 Comes An Action RPG With Vampires

Starting a new game studio is tough, and it usually takes time to earn respect. But Rebel Wolves is different – it was founded by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, a veteran of CD Projekt Red who helped create games like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. With that kind of background, they have the skills and experience to make something special, and their first game, The Blood of Dawnwalker, looks promising and worth paying attention to.

The upcoming action RPG, The Blood of Dawnwalker, takes place in a dark, Gothic European kingdom inspired by the 14th century. Players control Coen, a half-human, half-vampire character, who has only 30 days to rescue his family. As he tries to save them, he’ll have to fully accept either his human or vampire nature. A unique feature of the game is how the gameplay changes depending on whether Coen is human during the day or a vampire at night. Players will also have a real impact on the story through their choices and actions – and they’ll need to prioritize, as time is limited and not all quests can be completed.
