While Dragon Ball Z featured plenty of transformations, Dragon Ball Super takes it to another level. Starting with the Battle of Gods movie, Super consistently introduced a new form with almost every major story arc. Despite being a shorter series overall, Dragon Ball Super has significantly more transformations than Dragon Ball Z.
Unlike Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super features transformations that are more original in both appearance and how they’re used. Because Dragon Ball Super has significantly higher power levels, these transformations are far more powerful than anything from Dragon Ball Z, and they continue to become even stronger throughout the series.
10. Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black Combines God Ki, Saiyan Ki, & Kai Ki into a Lethal Mix
Goku Black is unique in his use of energy, or ‘Ki,’ as he can utilize God Ki, Kai Ki, and the Ki of a Saiyan. When he attempts to transform into a Super Saiyan Blue, he instead becomes a Super Saiyan Rosé. This form is essentially the same as Super Saiyan Blue, but slightly more powerful because Goku Black possesses both Goku’s abilities and the Kai training of Zamasu. In the Dragon Ball Super anime, Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black easily defeats Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta during their initial encounter.
In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Goku Black has to achieve both standard Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan Rosé forms, putting him at a disadvantage compared to how he appears in the anime. In both the manga and anime, even Super Saiyan Rosé isn’t strong enough for Goku Black to win against the Saiyans, so he merges with Zamasu to become Merged Zamasu.
9. Super Saiyan Rage Future Trunks Was Strong Enough To Defeat a Literal God
The return of Future Trunks in the Goku Black Saga was a huge surprise, and the arc’s bleak ending – where his timeline was completely erased – was even more shocking. At least Trunks gained a new power during the events. While training with Vegeta to battle Zamasu and Goku Black, he unknowingly absorbed some divine energy. This energy manifested as a powerful new transformation when he fought Fused Zamasu in the Dragon Ball Super anime.
Future Trunks’ Super Saiyan Rage form mixes the energy of a God with his Super Saiyan 2 power, giving him the strength to overcome Zamasu. Had Zamasu not been immortal, Trunks could have defeated him with his Sword of Hope. It’s worth noting that Super Saiyan Rage appears only in the Dragon Ball Super anime. The manga version of the story has Future Trunks training to become a Kai, and he uses his healing skills to assist Goku in the final battle against Merged Zamasu.
8. Super Saiyan Blue Evolution is SSB At Its Absolute Strongest
Super Saiyan Blue Evolution is a special transformation that only Vegeta achieves in both the Dragon Ball Super anime and manga. He first unlocks this form during the Tournament of Power. In the anime, Super Saiyan Blue Evolution brings Vegeta’s power level close to that of Goku when Goku is using Ultra Instinct -Sign-, making him appear slightly stronger than Goku. This difference in power is highlighted in their fight in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero when they spar in their base forms.
In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Super Saiyan Blue Evolution is an advanced form of the Mastered Super Saiyan Blue transformation. Vegeta primarily uses this form until he achieves Ultra Ego during the Granolah Saga. Unlike Vegeta, Goku attains Ultra Instinct in the Universe Survival Saga and doesn’t pursue developing his own version of Super Saiyan Blue Evolution. Vegeta most recently used Super Saiyan Blue Evolution during a practice match with Gohan Beast in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103.
7. Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken Mixes Two of Goku’s Strongest Forms into a Brutal Power-Up
In Dragon Ball Z, Goku largely stopped using the Kaioken technique after his battle with Frieza, only using it once in a non-official storyline. Dragon Ball Super reintroduced Kaioken after many years. In the Dragon Ball Super anime, Goku combines Kaioken with his Super Saiyan Blue form to gain an edge against Hit. The Dragon Ball Super manga shows Goku doing the same thing, but this time against Jiren during the Tournament of Power.
Goku can dramatically increase his power by using Kaioken while in his Super Saiyan Blue form. However, combining these two techniques puts a tremendous amount of stress on his body, leading to negative consequences. As seen in the Dragon Ball Super anime, Goku experiences a form of Ki sickness after the Tournament of Destroyers. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, using Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken simply overexerts Goku, leaving him unable to effectively fight against Jiren.
6. Orange Piccolo Can Finally Rival Goku & Vegeta Again Thanks to Shenron
For much of Dragon Ball Super, Piccolo played a minor role in battles. But Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero changed that, making him the central character and giving him his first-ever transformation in the entire Dragon Ball series. After wishing on the Dragon Balls to awaken his hidden power, Shenron granted Piccolo a special gift: the Orange Piccolo form.
Orange Piccolo is incredibly powerful, reaching a level comparable to the god-like forms of Goku and Vegeta, like Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego. Though he probably wouldn’t win in a direct fight against them, he’s now on their level in terms of strength. He deserved more attention, but the excitement around Gohan’s new form overshadowed his impressive power-up.
5. Mastered Ultra Instinct Has the Potential To Be The Strongest Form in Dragon Ball

Ultra Instinct debuted during Goku’s fight with Jiren in the Tournament of Power and is now his most powerful transformation. With continued training, it has the potential to become the ultimate form in Dragon Ball Super. Goku’s control over Ultra Instinct has grown with each story arc. During the Moro Saga, he learned to project his energy spiritually and access Ultra Instinct at will thanks to training with Merus. Then, in the Granolah Saga, Goku discovered how to combine Ultra Instinct with his other Super Saiyan forms, letting him save energy and use the transformation no matter what he’s feeling.
As of chapter 103 of Dragon Ball Super, Goku is still learning to master Ultra Instinct. However, because he didn’t fight in the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie, he hasn’t been able to fully unleash its power recently. He recently lost a practice fight to Gohan in his Beast form, but when Dragon Ball Super continues, it’s likely Goku will become stronger than both Gohan and Vegeta during the upcoming Black Frieza Saga.
4. Ultra Ego Vegeta is Currently Stronger Than Ultra Instinct Goku
During the Tournament of Power, Vegeta was surpassed by Goku’s Ultra Instinct. Determined to catch up, Vegeta began training to harness the power of a God of Destruction with guidance from Beerus, who gifted him a special earring. Later, while battling Granolah, Vegeta mastered this training and unlocked his new form, Ultra Ego, making him stronger than Goku.
I’m completely fascinated by Ultra Ego! It’s the polar opposite of Ultra Instinct – instead of dodging everything, it thrives on taking damage and getting stronger as a fight goes on. Honestly, the biggest problem so far has been stamina. We saw with the battles against Granolah and Gas that Vegeta just couldn’t maintain the form long enough to win. But if he ever fully masters it? Forget about it – he’ll be unstoppable. It’s crazy to think that even in its current, unrefined state, Ultra Ego Vegeta is already a little more powerful than Ultra Instinct Goku!
3. Legendary Super Saiyan Broly’s Power is Maximum
Broly, the Legendary Super Saiyan, is incredibly powerful in Dragon Ball Super. He’s so strong that Goku and Vegeta have to fuse into Gogeta just to have a fighting chance. Even Super Saiyan Gogeta isn’t enough, and they need to transform into Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta to finally defeat him. As of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Broly still can’t control his Legendary Super Saiyan power on his own, but with more training, he’s likely to become the Z-Fighters’ strongest ally against threats like Frieza Black.
Broly isn’t the only Super Saiyan with a legendary form in Dragon Ball Super. Kale, from Universe 6, also achieves this powerful transformation. Though slightly less powerful than Broly, Kale’s Legendary Super Saiyan form was incredibly strong, easily defeating many fighters in the Tournament of Power and even challenging Goku. Despite its instability, the Legendary Super Saiyan form is by far the most powerful Super Saiyan transformation in Dragon Ball.
2. Gohan Beast is Unprecedently Powerful
I always thought Ultimate Gohan was the strongest fighter in Dragon Ball Z when you didn’t consider fused characters. But that changed quickly with the introduction of Beerus and Super Saiyan God Goku in Battle of Gods. Honestly, Dragon Ball Super kind of left Gohan in the dust until the Universe Survival Saga, when he finally started training seriously and got back into fighting form for the Tournament of Power. Then Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero finally gave Gohan the recognition he deserved! It turned out he’d been training in secret all along, and we even got to see a completely new transformation – it was great to see him shine again.
Currently, Gohan Beast is the most powerful form available to the heroes. It’s unlike any other transformation – not a standard Saiyan form or a God form – and uniquely unlocks Gohan’s hidden strength. In a lot of ways, it feels like a further evolution of his Ultimate form from Dragon Ball Z. Gohan Beast is incredibly strong, as shown when he defeated Goku even while Goku was using Ultra Instinct, and then fought both Broly and Vegeta in Chapter 103 of Dragon Ball Super.
1. Black Frieza is the Strongest Form in Dragon Ball Super
In the latest Dragon Ball story arc, the Granolah Saga, Frieza has become the strongest character once again. After the events of the Broly movie, he left Universe 7 to travel through different universes. During his travels, he discovered an unused Hyperbolic Time Chamber and spent ten years training inside. This allowed him to become more powerful than ever before, even surpassing his Golden Frieza form, and achieve a new transformation called Black Frieza.
Black Frieza recently revealed a powerful new form at the conclusion of the Granolah Saga, quickly defeating Gas, and then effortlessly overcoming both Goku (in his Ultra Instinct form) and Vegeta (with Ultra Ego) in a single blow. When Dragon Ball Super continues in the manga, it will likely focus on this new threat from Black Frieza. However, it’s currently unclear how the Z-Fighters will be able to compete against a villain of such immense power. Simply put, Black Frieza is the strongest form Dragon Ball has ever presented.
