The 12 Best Scream Franchise Kills, Ranked

After a little over a month in theaters, Scream 7 became available to rent or buy digitally in early April. The film was highly anticipated, and the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott marked the first time a movie in the Scream series earned over $200 million worldwide. It also featured some of the most graphic and violent kills seen in the franchise.

That leads to a really interesting question: what are the most memorable kills in the Scream movies? With seven films, there are plenty of gruesome deaths to choose from – from Casey Becker to Tatum Riley, it’s surprisingly difficult to pick the best. It’s even harder if you think some killers, like Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard), might still be out there!

12. Laura Crane (Scream VI)

Actress: Samara Weaving

The opening scene of Scream VI, much like the original Scream, subverts typical expectations for a beginning kill. While the murder of Samara Weaving’s character, film professor Laura Crane, is relatively straightforward – she’s stabbed repeatedly in a dark alley – Weaving, known as a modern “Scream Queen,” delivers a truly iconic performance, complete with a chilling scream. It’s a memorable kill packed with references to the horror genre and effectively launches a thrilling sequel that comes close to matching the impact of the 1996 film.

11. Amber Freeman (Scream, 2022)

Actress: Mikey Madison

Amber is one of the two Ghostface killers in the 2022 film Scream. Like Jill, she becomes completely unhinged towards the end of the movie, making her a standout villain in the series. But her death is particularly satisfying. It happens when she’s covered in hand sanitizer, and a gunshot from Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) ignites the sanitizer, causing Amber to burst into flames – all because she had turned on the stove.

But like previous Ghost Face killers, Amber doesn’t go down without a fight. She gets back up, screaming and wielding a knife, her angry expression matching her personality. Tara (Jenna Ortega) then shoots her, ending the struggle. The impactful one-liner delivered after the shot, combined with the realistic special effects makeup used on Amber, makes her death particularly memorable among the many Ghost Face killings.

10. Tom Prinze (Scream 3)

Actor: Matt Keeslar

Similar to how over-the-top Scream 3 was, this is likely the most ridiculous and funny kill featured here. The third Scream movie leaned too heavily on self-aware jokes and commentary, which ultimately hurt it. While the first two Scream films used those elements to create a unique and scary experience, the third movie went too far. Despite that, Tom Prinze’s bizarre fate still deserves a place on this list.

The actor who played Dewey in Stab 3 hadn’t been particularly likable up until that point, so it was satisfying when his character was killed off. His death scene is memorable: Tom receives a fax in a mansion that’s filled with gas, and when he lights a lighter to read it, the entire house explodes. It’s always fun to see a disliked character meet such a dramatic end, and the explosion itself is visually striking. Tom’s death stands out in Scream 3 as a rare moment where the movie perfectly balances horror and humor.

9. Richie Kirsch (Scream, 2022)

Actor: Jack Quaid

Richie was one of the killers behind the Ghost Face mask in the new Scream movie. Throughout most of the film, he pretended to be Sam (played by Melissa Barrera)’s boyfriend, but his real goal was to get her to come to terms with her father, Billy Loomis, and his violent tendencies. He saw Sam as the problem because of her family history.

Richie immediately regretted his wish, as Sam brutally stabbed him multiple times in the chest and then slit his throat. While the Scream franchise is known for stabbings, this kill was particularly shocking. Unlike Sidney’s often decisive headshots, Sam’s attack was fueled by visible, intense emotion, catching many fans off guard.

8. Jill Roberts (Scream 4)

Actress: Emma Roberts

Jill is a fan-favorite Ghost Face killer, largely because of her shocking reveal and relentless pursuit of Sidney Prescott. These factors contribute to why her death is so memorable. Plus, the hospital setting and the way she dies – being electrocuted with a defibrillator – make it a particularly unique and striking moment in the entire Scream series.

It’s a shockingly definitive kill. There’s really not much more to say about it. Unless, of course, you’re one of the fans who still believes Jill survived – after all, she was only shot in the chest. But you have to shoot for the head; that’s just how it works.

7. Lucas Bowman (Scream 7)

Actor: Asa Germann

The latest Scream movie, Scream 7, received a lot of different reactions from viewers, but it does feature some impressively creative deaths. A particularly shocking scene in a bar completely broke the usual Scream formula, with several potential victims – including the main suspect, Lucas – being killed off rapidly.

The character obsessed with Sidney received one of the most memorable practical effects deaths in the series – his throat was brutally forced into a beer tap, with blood gushing out like a crowded bar on a busy night. It’s especially tragic because he had just started a sweet, budding romance with his classmate, Chloe (Celeste O’Connor), moments before.

6. Anika Kayoko (Scream VI)

Actress: Devyn Nekoda

Anika, played by Jasmin Savoy Brown, is one of the victims, and her death is particularly frightening to watch. Ghost Face chases her and Mindy through Sam’s apartment, eventually forcing them to try and escape via a ladder to a neighboring building. While most of the group makes it across safely, Anika is left stranded in the middle, suspended high in the air. This scene is sure to give viewers with a fear of heights a strong reaction.

The real terror begins when Ghost Face enters and starts violently shaking the ladder Anika is climbing. She loses her grip and falls, her scream echoing in the alley as she hits her head on a dumpster. The fall is difficult to watch, but Mindy’s reaction to witnessing her girlfriend’s death is genuinely heartbreaking. Throughout the series, Mindy has been known for her sarcastic and intelligent remarks, but this moment reveals a vulnerable and relatable side to her character.

5. Tatum Riley (Scream, 1996)

Actress: Rose McGowan

This is one of the most shocking and unforgettable deaths in the original film. It resonated with audiences because, after the release of Scream, many people developed a fear of being crushed by garage doors. The scene itself is brilliantly done practically, and the image of Tatum’s body afterward is deeply disturbing.

The film really ramps up the violence when Sidney discovers her friend has been killed. This moment is particularly impactful because Dewey loses his sister at the same time, a loss that deeply affects him throughout the rest of the series.

4. Olivia Morris (Scream 4)

Actress: Marielle Jaffe

Most of the deaths on this list are shocking because of the violence itself, but Olivia Morris’s murder in Scream 4 stands out. While the actual killing is brutal, especially considering the amount of blood and the identity of the Ghostface killer, it’s the events leading up to the murder – the deception and the way Sidney discovers the body – that truly make it memorable.

The scene of Olivia’s body, covered in blood on the bed, is disturbing enough. But the graphic addition of her internal organs spilling out makes it one of the most shocking deaths in the entire Scream series. Scream 4 was director Wes Craven’s final film before he passed away in 2015, and he didn’t hold back on the gore for this popular sequel.

3. Hannah Thurman (Scream 7)

Actress: Mckenna Grace

Hannah’s death in Scream 7 could be the most brutal kill in the entire series. Mckenna Grace convincingly portrays the terror of being trapped by the harness wires, delivering a truly frightening performance. The scene where Ghost Face slowly torments her before attacking with multiple stab wounds is a standout moment, even if the sequel itself isn’t the strongest in the franchise.

The final shot of Hannah’s death is particularly shocking. Seeing her body hanging is frightening on its own, but the added gore emphasizes how much the horror genre – and what an R-rating allows – has changed in the last three decades. It’s arguably the most terrifying image in all of the Scream movies.
