With so many fantasy series available—and more appearing all the time—it’s impossible to list them all. However, we’ve picked out a few truly great ones that any anime enthusiast should definitely experience.
Fantasy and supernatural stories can often overlap, but for the purposes of this list, we’re focusing on fantasy. That means we’ll exclude anime such as Mononoke, Mushi-Shi, Dandadan, Fruits Basket, JoJo, and Monogatari, among others.

20. Humanity Has Declined
A Surreal Post-Apocalyptic Comedy
The anime Humanity Has Declined portrays a world where humans are fading away, and fairies are becoming the new dominant species. These fairies, driven by instinct, require guidance, and they find it in an unnamed, practical woman.
Humanity Has Declined is a funny, visually striking, and somewhat cynical show. It’s set in a fantasy world that’s transitioning between old and new, leading to lots of strange situations and comical misunderstandings.
19. InuYasha
A Shonen Classic That Has Aged Well Enough
When InuYasha first came to the United States in 2002, it quickly became incredibly popular – it was already a huge hit in Japan! The show was so well-received, it even inspired its own trading card game. The series, which has over 160 episodes, centers on Kagome and Inuyasha’s quest to collect the shattered pieces of the Shikon Jewel.
InuYasha remains a popular anime for good reason, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you really should! While the series has some flaws – the latter half can become quite repetitive – InuYasha at its peak truly highlights the talent of Rumiko Takahashi.
18. Undead Murder Farce
A Victorian Epic Drenched In Literary References
Undead Murder Farce is a darkly humorous and enjoyable anime. It’s set in a fantastical version of Meiji-era Japan and centers around an immortal woman who doesn’t have a body, her experienced maid, and a half-ogre investigator. Together, they solve mysteries involving the supernatural.
Undead Murder Farce is a story that mixes historical elements with fantasy, imagining a world where humans and monsters like demons and vampires live together. While they share the world, it’s not a peaceful existence. The main characters, and even those who appear less frequently, are complex and show the weight of their experiences.
17. From the New World
A Fantasy Anime That Gradually Becomes A War Drama
The anime From the New World starts a little slow, with the initial episodes feeling somewhat uneven. But once the story gains momentum and delves into its core themes and conflicts, it becomes incredibly strong, building towards what many consider to be one of the best finales in fantasy anime. What’s refreshing about From the New World is that it’s a psychological thriller that really focuses on developing its characters while also exploring the complex social and political world they inhabit.
The world this anime takes place in is captivating. While it’s technically a post-apocalyptic setting, it feels different and offers a fresh take on the genre. The story focuses heavily on its characters, and both the good guys and bad guys are complex and morally gray for much of the series.
16. Magi
Anime Arabian Nights
I’m a huge fan of Magi! It’s an amazing fantasy anime that actually pulls its characters and stories from the classic Arabian Nights tales. You’ll recognize names like Aladdin, Sinbad, Ali Baba, and even Morgana – they’re all central characters! The main story unfolds over two seasons, The Labyrinth of Magic and The Kingdom of Magic, and there’s even a spin-off series called Adventure of Sinbad that expands on the world.
The first season of Magi starts simply, with Aladdin and Ali Baba exploring towers filled with treasure. However, the story quickly becomes much larger and more complex. The Kingdom of Magic is particularly captivating because it delves deeper into the world’s politics and society. The spin-off series is also highly enjoyable and many fans actually prefer it to the original show.
15. Black Clover
Overcame A Polarizing Start To Become One Of The Best Shonen Anime Of The Last Decade
When Black Clover first came out in 2017, many people made fun of it. It tried too hard to be like Naruto, and the voice acting was unusual. The story follows Asta and Yuno, two orphans who dream of becoming the greatest Wizard King in a world full of magic. There’s just one problem: Asta doesn’t seem to have any magical powers. However, he receives a mysterious book that gives him the ability to cancel out magic. This leads him to join the Black Clover squad, a group known for its unconventional members.
At first glance, Black Clover feels similar to many classic action anime, and the initial episodes are decent but not outstanding. But around episode 40, with the start of the Seabed Temple arc, the series really finds its footing and starts to become something special, ultimately leading into the fantastic Elf Reincarnation storyline.
14. Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-
The Best Isekai Anime
Since isekai anime already have their own dedicated article, I’ve kept them separate here to avoid overwhelming this discussion. Despite often getting a bad rap, the isekai genre has delivered some truly excellent anime, most of which are fantasy-based. Shows like TenSura, Overlord, KonoSuba, and The Eminence in Shadow are highly recommended, and Mushoku Tensei is a particularly divisive series – people either love it or hate it.
Like Mushoku Tensei, Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World tends to divide viewers, largely because its main character, Subaru, is quite controversial. However, despite this, Re:ZERO* is a standout dark fantasy anime from the last ten years, known for putting its characters through incredibly difficult trials. The series focuses heavily on character development, and isn’t afraid to show its heroes at their lowest points before they rebuild themselves – some scenes are genuinely frightening.
13. Slayers
An All-Time Great Fantasy Anime With An All-Time Great Female Protagonist
The anime Slayers is a beloved classic in the fantasy genre, and is known for being one of the funniest. The first season, in particular, is a standout. It often feels like a playful spoof, following the chaotic journey of Lina Inverse and her somewhat selfish, but ultimately good-hearted, companions.
Over its 15-year run, the anime Slayers produced five seasons, over 100 episodes, plus several movies and OVAs. While fans often prefer the seasons from the 1990s, the show is consistently funny and enjoyable. Lina Inverse remains a standout and beloved female character in fantasy anime. If you’re looking for a hilarious comedy, it’s hard to beat this series.
12. Solo Leveling
Top-Notch Fantasy Action
Honestly, it’s a bit nerve-wracking when a show gets so much hype. The pressure’s on to be amazing right away, or people jump to call it overrated. We’ve seen it happen with recent anime like Chainsaw Man and Hell’s Paradise – they were great, but not instant classics, and now Solo Leveling is facing the same challenge. This manhwa is legendary, and its popularity really put manhwa on the map, inspiring tons of other series. So, the anime adaptation has a lot to live up to – it’s got huge shoes to fill!
Imagine an Earth where mysterious dungeons suddenly appear. Some people have awakened special abilities, becoming hunters who explore these dangerous places. Sung Jin-Woo is known as the weakest hunter in his group, usually only sent on simple missions. But during one routine hunt, the team discovers a hidden passage leading to a chamber far too powerful for them. Facing certain death, Jin-Woo is presented with an unusual opportunity – one that could save his life and make him incredibly strong.
I thought the first season of the anime was pretty good, as long as you didn’t go in expecting something completely groundbreaking. The original story is really popular for its awesome fights and beautiful art, and A-1 Pictures did a great job bringing those to life. The way the main character, Jin-Woo, gets stronger might not appeal to everyone – some people don’t like characters who become too powerful, too quickly. But the show takes its time with his development, which I appreciated. Honestly, the second season blew the first one away, especially when it came to the action. The fight scenes were seriously impressive and really raised the bar for the genre.

11. Violet Evergarden
Life After War
The anime Violet Evergarden is based on a series of novels and centers around a unique character called an Auto Memory Doll, originally created to assist in war. After the war ended, Violet became a messenger, and through this job, she began to understand human feelings firsthand.
Violet Evergarden is structured as a series of individual stories, with each episode typically focusing on a single mission for the main character. Though the anime occasionally has uneven moments, it’s often deeply emotional, powerful, and memorable. The accompanying movie is also excellent and highly recommended, even if you’re not a dedicated fan of the series.
