Introduction
Eighty years have passed since the end of World War II. The conflict, which devastated Europe and Asia, fundamentally altered the world. Today, as we remember the sacrifices of those who lived through it – soldiers, heroes, and everyday people – we also recognize how deeply the war continues to influence our lives. One way this is visible is through video games, which have become a significant platform for telling, remembering, and even reinterpreting the stories and battles of World War II.
This isn’t just a list of popular WWII games; it’s a personal collection of some of my favorites – games that are realistic, engaging, historically important, and available in 2025. You’ll find everything from incredibly detailed simulations to emotionally powerful stories about the war. Whether you’re an experienced strategy gamer or new to the genre, this list offers something for everyone, providing a fresh perspective on this pivotal moment in history.
This isn’t a definitive list, just a collection of games I think offer something for everyone – from fast-paced shooters and realistic flight sims, to both quick and complex strategy games. There are countless World War II games out there, and this doesn’t include all of my favorites. Feel free to suggest more in the comments!
25 – Call of Duty: World At War
Call of Duty: World at War, originally launched in 2008, remains a particularly intense and realistic depiction of World War II within the fast-paced first-person shooter genre. It’s still a personal favorite of mine – I vividly remember being shocked by its brutality when I first played it in high school. The game stood out for its portrayal of the Pacific Theater and its harrowing campaign on the Eastern Front, truly capturing the savage and desperate nature of total war. While the campaign is arguably the strongest part of the game, it also boasted a very active and competitive multiplayer community back in its prime. Those were some great times!
I’d suggest this game to anyone interested in World War 2, but who isn’t into complex strategy or realistic military simulations. It offers a more action-packed and straightforward way to experience the conflict.
24 – Panzer Corps 2
If you’re new to wargames, Panzer Corps 2 is a fantastic place to start in 2025, and even experienced turn-based strategy fans will love it. It’s a modern take on classic hex-based wargaming, featuring detailed 3D graphics, randomly generated maps, and tons of units. You take command in the European Theater, leading forces through a large, branching campaign with plenty of downloadable content covering different battles and armies. What makes it great is how easy it is to learn – you can jump right in without much prior knowledge, unlike some other wargames. But it also offers enough depth to keep you engaged for hours, especially with the active community constantly creating new scenarios and challenges. It truly offers hundreds of hours of rewarding gameplay.
If you’re on a tight budget, Panzer Corps: Gold Edition is a great option. It frequently goes on sale for a low price and offers a huge number of missions – possibly over a thousand!
23 – Commandos: Origins
Commandos: Origins is a challenging but rewarding strategy game that lets you experience the origins of the famous WWII special forces. As a leader, you’ll control a team of six skilled operatives – like the Green Beret, Sapper, and Spy – on secret missions across diverse environments, from the Arctic to the African deserts. Success depends on careful planning, stealth, and knowing when to strike. As a long-time fan of the original Commandos games, I think Origins successfully captures the spirit of the classics while updating the gameplay for modern audiences.
22 – Hidden & Dangerous 2: Courage Under Fire
I have fond memories of playing this game as a child and being struck by how different it was from other games I knew, like Medal of Honor. Released in 2003, Hidden & Dangerous 2: Courage Under Fire is a tactical shooter that uniquely combines stealth, action, and managing a squad. You command a British SAS team on secret missions around the world. What really made it special was the freedom it gave you – you could blast your way through missions or carefully plan a stealthy approach. Its attention to detail still makes it a satisfying WWII shooter, and a dedicated community continues to support it with fan-made updates.
21 – Armoured Commander II
Armoured Commander 2 is a truly special game, and one I’ve enjoyed immensely since its early days in 2021. It’s a minimalist, text-based strategy game where you command a single tank during World War II. Don’t let the simple, retro graphics fool you – it’s surprisingly deep, realistically simulating everything from managing your tank crew and dealing with injuries, to the harsh realities of tank combat. The game creates compelling, unpredictable stories focused on the survival of your crew, offering a tense and personal experience for serious strategy game fans. You’ll fight in randomly generated campaigns across multiple theaters of the war – North Africa, the Pacific, and Europe – and you’ll have access to a huge variety of tanks, representing all major combatants and eras.
