Introduction
It’s been eighty years since World War II ended. The conflict, which stretched from Eastern Europe to Germany and Japan, dramatically reshaped the world. Today, as we remember the sacrifices of those who lived through the war, we also recognize its lasting influence on our lives. Video games, especially, have become a significant way to learn about, honor, and even reinterpret the events and experiences of World War II.
This isn’t just a list of popular WWII games; it’s a personal pick of some of my favorites – games that are realistic, moving, historically important, and available in 2025. You’ll find everything from incredibly detailed simulations to emotionally powerful stories about the impact of war. Whether you’re a long-time strategy game enthusiast or new to the genre, this list offers a unique way to experience and learn about the defining conflict of a generation. There’s something here for every player.
This isn’t a definitive list, just a collection of games I think people will enjoy – everything from fast-paced shooters and realistic flight sims to intense strategy games. There are tons of World War II games out there, and I’m sure I’ve missed some of your favorites! Feel free to suggest more in the comments.
25 – Call of Duty: World At War
Call of Duty: World at War, launched in 2008, remains a powerfully realistic and intense depiction of World War II, delivered through fast-paced, first-person shooting. It’s still one of my favorite games. I vividly remember playing it in high school and being struck by its graphic and brutal nature, particularly the Pacific Theater – a setting relatively new to the Call of Duty series at the time – and the harrowing Eastern Front campaign, which truly showed the savage and desperate nature of total war. While the campaign is arguably the strongest part of the game, it also boasted a very active and skilled multiplayer community back in its prime. Those were some great times!
I’d suggest this game to anyone interested in World War 2, but who isn’t into complicated strategy or super-realistic military simulations. It’s a great way to experience the conflict with a more fast-paced, arcade-style approach.
24 – Panzer Corps 2
If you’re new to wargames and looking for a great place to start in 2025, Panzer Corps 2 is an excellent choice, especially if you enjoy turn-based strategy. It’s a modern take on classic hex-based wargaming, featuring impressive 3D graphics, varied maps, and a huge selection of units. You take command in the European Theater, leading forces through a large, branching campaign with plenty of downloadable content covering different battles and armies. What makes Panzer Corps 2 stand out is how easy it is to learn – you can jump right in without much prior experience, unlike some other wargames. But it also offers enough strategic depth to keep experienced players engaged, and a dedicated community constantly creates new scenarios, ensuring tons of replay value.
If you’re on a tight budget, Panzer Corps: Gold Edition is a great option. It often goes on sale for a low price and offers a huge number of missions – possibly over a thousand!
23 – Commandos: Origins
Commandos: Origins is sure to spark debate, but it’s a must-play if you want to experience the origins of this famous WWII special forces series in a beloved strategy game style. This real-time tactics game puts you in charge of a six-person squad – featuring characters like the Green Beret, Sapper, and Spy – on secret missions. You’ll navigate diverse environments, from frozen Arctic landscapes to African deserts, relying on stealth, careful planning, and explosive action to defeat heavily guarded enemies and fight against the Nazi occupation. As a long-time fan of the original Commandos games, I think Origins successfully updates the classic formula for modern players.
22 – Hidden & Dangerous 2: Courage Under Fire
I have fond memories of playing this game as a child and being struck by how different it was from other titles I knew, like Medal of Honor. Released in 2003, Hidden & Dangerous 2: Courage Under Fire is a tactical shooter that combines stealth, action, and managing a squad of British SAS soldiers on secret missions around the world. What really sets it apart is the incredible freedom it gives you to complete objectives – you can go in guns blazing or carefully plan a stealthy approach. With its detailed environments and engaging gameplay, it remains a unique and satisfying WWII shooter, and a dedicated community continues to support it with fan-made updates.
21 – Armoured Commander II
Armoured Commander 2 is a truly special game, and one I’ve enjoyed immensely since its release in 2021. It’s a minimalist, text-based war game where you command a single tank in World War II. Don’t let the simple, retro graphics fool you – it’s surprisingly deep, realistically simulating everything from managing your tank crew and dealing with injuries to the harsh realities of tank combat. The game generates new campaigns each time you play, set across various theaters of the war – North Africa, the Pacific, and Europe – and focuses on creating a tense, personal story about your crew’s survival. With almost every tank used in the war represented, from early German models to late-war American heavy tanks, you’ll have plenty of hardware to choose from. It’s a challenging and unique experience perfect for dedicated wargame fans.
