As 2025 winds down, fewer new games are being released, giving players a chance to catch up on titles they might have missed. Xbox Game Pass is a great way to expand your gaming options and try games you wouldn’t normally buy. But with so much content available on the service, choosing what to play next can be overwhelming. I often find myself spending ages browsing PC Game Pass, only to end up replaying Gears of War – and then, of course, I have to play all the sequels, which takes up the whole month!
To help you choose a game to play on Game Pass, here are three recommendations for the weekend. I’ve tried to include something for everyone – a brand new release, a hidden gem you might have missed, and a top game from last year that’s worth revisiting (or discovering if you haven’t played it yet).
The article also includes a section recognizing noteworthy games from different genres.
1. Marvel Cosmic Invasion
December 2025’s New Big Game Pass Game, And It Is Perfect For Co-Op
If you’re like me and love a good beat-’em-up, you probably already know Tribute Games from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge – seriously, it’s one of the best modern games in the genre. Well, they’ve done it again! Their new game, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, feels a lot like Shredder’s Revenge in terms of gameplay, even though it’s based on a different universe. Honestly, if you enjoy stylish, satisfying combat and just wailing on bad guys, this is a home run. It’s easy to pick up and play, but there’s still plenty of depth to keep you engaged – it’s right up there with the best beat-’em-ups out there.
Compared to other action games, Marvel Cosmic Invasion doesn’t have a massive number of moves, but it focuses on creating exciting combos and offering a diverse range of playstyles. This is made even better by a large selection of playable characters. Games like this stay popular because people enjoy playing them again and again, and Marvel Cosmic Invasion encourages that with characters who all feel unique – you’ll want to try them all, not just the usual favorites like Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Captain America. While some characters need to be unlocked, most are available right away, giving you and your friends lots of choices.
Playing “Marvel Cosmic Invasion” by yourself can be enjoyable, but it’s even more fun with four players in cooperative mode. You can team up and perform special tag team attacks!
2. Evil West
An Underrated Third-Person Shooter & Hack And Slash Hybrid With A Cool Setting
Evil West has had a bit of a strange journey with Xbox Game Pass. It was available for a while, then removed in early 2025, only to be added back a few months later. While it’s not the newest or most hyped game, Evil West is perfect for a subscription service like Game Pass. It received mixed reviews when it came out in 2022, and many players likely have too many games to play already. If you haven’t bought it on sale, you probably won’t. But if you have Game Pass, now is a great time to try it out – download it this weekend!
Despite the campaign becoming a bit repetitive after 10+ hours of play, Evil West‘s combat is incredibly fun. It’s a great mix of shooting and melee attacks, successfully combining elements of third-person shooters and action-packed hack-and-slash games, with a clear influence from 2018’s God of War. Levels generally consist of arenas designed for fighting, connected by short pathways. While this structure can feel familiar, it consistently puts the focus on what the game does best: its exciting combat.
Also, weird western games are hard to come by, and Evil West really nails that aesthetic and concept.
3. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
A Top Contender For 2025’s Game Of The Year (And Best Game Pass Game)
This recommendation feels a bit redundant. While the upcoming Silksong (also on Game Pass) might generate similar excitement, no 2025 game has made quite the impact of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Its launch directly on Microsoft’s platform was a smart move that helped it gain popularity quickly. I suspect most Game Pass subscribers have already played it, though turn-based RPGs aren’t for everyone. Despite the genre’s popularity and history, it still appeals to a smaller audience.
Even if you don’t typically enjoy role-playing games, Clair Obscur is worth checking out. It’s a strong contender for Game of the Year, and many believe it’s the favorite to win. The game received an impressive 12 nominations at The Game Awards, including Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, Best Audio Design, Best Performance (for Ben Starr and Charlie Cox), Best Independent Game, Best Debut Indie Game, and Best RPG, as well as the Player’s Voice award. This broke the record for the most nominations any game has ever received.
So, yeah, the game is pretty good. If you have yet to play it, give it a go this weekend.
