With December 2025 just around the corner, there’s still a lot of great gaming to look forward to. Like most years, October and November were full of exciting releases, making it a fantastic six-week period for players. While December won’t be quite as packed, it still offers a strong lineup of games to keep you busy. And it’s capped off by one of the year’s biggest titles – thankfully, it won’t be the only noteworthy release of the month.
Okay, so I get it – my backlog is already HUGE with all these games coming out every week. I was thinking about just taking December 2025 off, but honestly, I think that would be a mistake. There are some seriously promising games dropping that month, and I don’t want to miss out on any hidden gems. Let’s take a look at the most exciting releases coming up – hopefully, they’ll make for a fantastic end to the year!
The games are listed in release order, and an honorable mentions section is included at the end.
Marvel Cosmic Invasion
The Biggest Beat ‘Em Up Game Of 2025
Even though we haven’t seen the final product yet, Marvel Cosmic Invasion looks like it could be the best classic beat ’em up game of the year. The team behind the excellent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is building on their success with this new title. This time, they have access to a much larger cast of characters from the Marvel universe, featuring 15 playable heroes and tons of villains. Players will be able to control popular characters like Wolverine, Venom, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, and She-Hulk, each with their own distinct style, which should make the game fun to play over and over again.
Based on what we’ve seen with Shredder’s Revenge, Marvel Cosmic Invasion‘s story mode will probably take around two hours to complete. The real fun will come from learning how to play each character well. The game is built for teamwork, letting up to four players create their dream team of heroes. A neat feature is that each player controls two characters and can switch between them instantly, opening up lots of cool combo possibilities. I always enjoy playing Shredder’s Revenge by myself, and I expect Marvel Cosmic Invasion will be just as enjoyable, whether you play alone or with friends.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
The Biggest Game Releasing In December 2025
Get ready for what’s shaping up to be the biggest game of December 2025: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The game’s development wasn’t easy, with a change in developers and a complete overhaul, but Nintendo wouldn’t release it unless it lived up to the incredibly high quality of the original Metroid Prime trilogy – games still considered some of the best first-person adventure games ever made. This new adventure promises to be Samus Aran’s most expansive and ambitious yet. She’s crash-landed on a mysterious planet called Viewros and must explore, solve puzzles, and fight her way to escape.
Like previous games in the series, Metroid Prime 4 is mainly played from a first-person perspective, though the camera will sometimes switch to third-person, especially when riding Samus’s motorcycle or solving puzzles. Speaking of which, Samus now has a motorcycle to navigate the different areas of the planet Viewros! She’ll also gain psychic abilities that will likely be useful in both fighting enemies and exploring. I can’t wait for Metroid Prime 4 to come out, and I’m still excited about the addition of a character who will talk to Samus throughout the game.
Routine
December 2025’s Biggest Horror Game
The term “sci-fi horror” usually gets people really excited, and games that fit that description don’t come along very often – especially ones that look and play well. Lunar Software’s Routine drops you onto a lunar base with minimal defenses, and you’re not the only one there. You’ll explore a spooky, maze-like base decorated in a retro ’80s style, using a versatile tool for solving puzzles and exploring, but it can also be used as a weapon if you’re cornered by the enemies hunting you down.
From what we’ve seen, the game Routine focuses more on creating psychological horror than action. It appears you’ll primarily be trying to avoid danger by running and hiding, as the game emphasizes the feeling of being a vulnerable character who should only fight as a final resort. It’s unclear if you’ll get access to more standard weapons later on, but the early experience really highlights that sense of helplessness.
Octopath Traveler 0
The Biggest RPG Dropping In December 2025
It’s highly likely that Octopath Traveler 0 will be a fantastic game. The previous Octopath Traveler titles were excellent, classic-style turn-based JRPGs with a beautiful, unique art style. This new game draws inspiration from Champions of the Continent, a well-regarded mobile game that came before the original Octopath Traveler. Importantly, Octopath Traveler 0 is being created as a full, traditional release for consoles and PC, rather than simply a port of the mobile game, which will likely appeal to long-time fans of the series.
Like previous games, you’ll control a party of eight characters. However, Octopath Traveler 0 lets you choose from a much larger group of potential recruits instead of being limited to a set team. Beyond a long main story, the game also includes features like farming and building up towns, which should give players plenty to do.
Code Violet
The Biggest “Unknown Quantity” Game Of December 2025
I’m really excited about Code Violet. It’s a unique game – a third-person shooter combined with horror, and it features dinosaurs! It feels like a fresh take on the classic Dino Crisis. While it’s a PlayStation 5 exclusive and we know the general idea from screenshots and videos, a lot about the game is still unknown. It’s hard to say if it will be one of the best games of December 2025, and being exclusive to PlayStation doesn’t guarantee quality.
The game Code Violet has a really unusual setup. It’s set in the future where humans have moved to a new location, figured out time travel, but can no longer have children. You play as a woman who was kidnapped from the past to be used as a surrogate mother – it’s a disturbing idea, but it has the potential to be a compelling horror experience. And, as we touched on before, there are dinosaurs involved!
TeamKill Media has a long-standing relationship with Sony, and all of their games have been released exclusively on Sony consoles. While their 2023 game, Quantum Error, didn’t fully meet expectations, Son and Bone was a respectable title. Now, TeamKill is aiming for their most ambitious and successful game yet with Code Violet.
