Summary
- Knight Lautrec’s questline involves freeing him early on and hunting him down later.
- Reah of Thorolund’s questline offers basic and advanced miracles in Undead Parish.
- Siegmeyer of Catarina’s questline is one of the saddest, ending on a bitter note.
The popular video game series known as “Dark Souls” has been in existence for quite some time now, and throughout its journey, it has amassed a significant number of devoted fans. This is largely due to its diverse character classes, numerous weapons for players to utilize, and the formidable bosses that players encounter at various stages.
As a dedicated Dark Souls gamer, I’ve always had a soft spot for the original game, even though its successors boast more Dexterity-friendly rings and a wider array of bosses, armor sets, and weapons. However, it was the first installment that ignited the incredible franchise we know today. Here are some of the most challenging side quests I’ve ever encountered in Dark Souls.
6. Knight Lautrec’s Questline
Players Can Free Him Early On

- He will kill Anastasia of Astora, triggering a small questline
- Defeating the Bell Gargoyles allows him to escape
For the first time, players meet Knight Lautrec of Carim, who’s confined within the Undead Parish. They have two options: free him using the right tools if they possess them, or eliminate the Bell Gargoyles, a move that will facilitate his escape. Once freed from his imprisonment, regardless of the method, Knight Lautrec can be found in the Firelink Shrine.
After the second alarm of awakening sounds or when the Fire Keeper’s Spirit is rescued from Blighttown, he will slay Anastasia of Astora, initiating a quest where players must track him down to recover the Fire Keeper’s Soul in Anor Londo. A smart approach to confront him is to land as many blows as you can to take him down swiftly. Lautrec may not have the most challenging questline in the original Dark Souls, but he certainly warrants a place on the list.
5. Reah of Thorolund’s Questline
An Important Side Character In A World Full Of Darkness

- Once her questline is completed, she will sell miracles to players in the Undead Parrish
- Finding her throughout the game can be difficult
Rhea from Thorolund is an engaging character not just because she’s voiced by the same actress as Quelaag’s sister and Sieglinde of Catarina, but also due to the intriguing side mission she presents for players. Similar to numerous side quests in the Dark Souls series, Rhea’s isn’t exceptionally challenging from most aspects, but locating her at different spots and avoiding advancing too far in the story before completing it can be tricky. Initially, she shows up at the Firelink Shrine following the defeat of the Capra Demon by the Chosen Undead. To uncover fascinating details about her, players must converse with Griggs of Vinheim prior to Rhea departing from this location.
In the pit that Patches hurls players into, I’m usually stationed, asking the Chosen Undead to vanquish my hollowed minions. Successfully completing this task grants the Replenishment miracle as a reward. Afterward, you can always find me in the Undead Parish, consistently peddling both fundamental and advanced miracles. While my followers may not pose a significant threat, wielding one of the game’s most potent weapons can certainly streamline the process of defeating them.
4. Big Hat Logan’s Questline
A Sorcerer Who Always Finds Himself In Trouble

- Big Hat Logan is fascinated by Seath the Scaleless
- Players must free him continuously throughout the story
Locating “Big Hat Logan” isn’t an easy feat, as he’s ensconced within a concealed cage behind a fortress wall, known as Sen’s Fortress – one of the game’s most intricate and difficult-to-traverse regions. To set him free, gamers must secure either the Cage Key or the Master Key. Upon his release, he will make his way to the Firelink Shrine and can be found in close proximity to Griggs of Vinheim. Should players desire to expand their magical arsenal, they may choose to buy Sorceries from him.
Following the obtaining of the Lordvessel, it becomes apparent that Big Hat Logan has landed in trouble yet again, this time being locked up within The Duke’s Archives. To release him from his predicament, you will need the Archive Tower Giant Cell Key. After buying all of his spells and overcoming Seath the Scaleless, he will succumb to madness and retreat into Seath’s battle arena, displaying hostility towards players. For those who have completed this game and seek a comparable adventure outside its world, they may find enjoyment in some of the top games that share a similar atmosphere to Dark Souls.
3. The Darkwraith Covenant Questline
A Great Covenant That Requires Strategic Planning To Join

- Players must place the Lordvessel for Kathee instead of Frampt
- It’s really easy to miss one or more steps to join the covenant
As a gamer, I found myself drawn into the Darkwraith Covenant, though it’s more like a hidden path than a typical side quest. To embark on this challenging journey, first, you need to chat with Kaathe once you’ve claimed the Covenant of Artorias ring. This special ring can be earned by slaying the Great Grey Wolf Sif. The Key to the Seal is another crucial item, which can be obtained from Ingward following your triumph over the Four Kings. Remember, it’s essential to place Kaathe’s Lordvessel instead of Frampt’s, or else he won’t make an appearance. Lastly, you must respond affirmatively to his questions to be whisked away to the Firelink Altar.
To become a part of the Darkwraith Covenant, players must speak with Kathee once more within the Abyss. The path to joining this covenant is fraught with danger, but careful planning is crucial to avoid making a mistake that permanently blocks this opportunity until NG+. Navigating through the challenging areas necessary for reaching the point of Darkwraith Covenant membership can be tricky, so having a strong weapon and one of the game’s top shields can greatly facilitate this journey.
2. Domhnall Of Zena’s Questline
An Eccentric Peddler Who Sells Valuable Goods

- His armor set is very interesting
- He can sometimes stay in the Depths for unknown reasons
One challenging aspect of the Domhnall of Zena questline lies not so much in its complexity, but rather an unexplained glitch that can confuse players. Initially, Domhnall is located within the sewers of Depths, in a room leading to Blighttown. After activating both Bells of Awakening, Domhnall usually moves to Firelink Shrine beneath the aqueduct. However, there are instances where he fails to relocate, even after ringing the bells, and the reason for this inconsistency remains unknown.
In comparison to other questlines within the game, Domhnall’s is relatively brief. Nevertheless, it’s worth searching for him because he offers unique crystallized equipment and boss armor that become accessible as you defeat various bosses. While he may come across as peculiar, he isn’t among the most frightening characters in the Dark Souls trilogy. Therefore, players can confidently purchase from him and go about their business afterwards.
1. Siegmeyer Of Catarina’s Questline
Arguably The Saddest Quest In The Entire Game

- An incredibly hard quest to complete due to how many things can go wrong and interrupt it
- The quest ends on a bitter note that will hit players hard
Individuals who finished Dark Souls 3 prior to playing the original Dark Souls may find themselves perplexed, mistaking Siegmeyer and Siegward for the same character. This confusion arises due to their identical armor and similar names, as well as their apparent origin from the same location. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that these characters are distinct entities, as it is assumed that a significant time gap of thousands of years exists between Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3.
In the game Dark Souls, Siegmeyer of Catarina’s storyline is one of the lengthiest and most challenging to finish due to his appearances in multiple locations. Initially, players may encounter him at the entrance to Sen’s Fortress before the Bells of Awakening are rung. Once the bells have sounded, he can be found at the first boulder obstacle within the same location. Finding him becomes difficult because players are usually preoccupied with survival rather than searching for an NPC. Upon reaching Anor Londo, players can find him near the third bonfire, where they can assist him and later encounter him at the Firelink Shrine’s bonfire. Here, players should converse with him until they exhaust all his dialogue, leading him to move to Blighttown, close to the ramp leading to the Great Hollow area. Assisting him in Blighttown will cause him to relocate to Lost Izalith, where players can rescue him. Finally, both Siegmeyer and his daughter, Sieglinde, can be found at the first bonfire in Ash Lake.
As a gamer embarking on Siegmeyer’s quest, I’ve found it quite a daunting task to navigate. The journey is filled with unexpected twists, one of which is the perilous leap into the pit inhabited by the Chaos Eaters in Lost Izalith. If my health dips below half before this leap, I risk succumbing to my wounds, thus concluding Siegmeyer’s story prematurely. The Chaos Eaters aren’t overly difficult on their own, but they could have easily been among the most challenging bosses in the Dark Souls trilogy if they had a dedicated fight sequence.
However, should I manage to keep Siegmeyer alive and thriving until we reach Ash Lake, a chilling turn of events unfolds. He transforms into a Hollow being and attacks his daughter. After mourning him, Sieglinde brings this side quest to an end with a poignant, bitter note that lingers in my gaming memories.
