As a seasoned gamer, I’ve come across many memorable characters in my gaming escapades, but none have been as pivotal and intertwined with my journey like the ones I’m about to mention. The cast of Red Dead Redemption 2 is undeniably impressive, yet they truly shine when you consider their profound influence on Arthur Morgan, the outlaw we all can’t help but root for.
In the game “Red Dead Redemption 2”, key figures who significantly influenced Arthur Morgan’s life are highlighted below, along with reasons for their importance, and the effects they had on shaping Arthur as either a virtuous man or a morally questionable character in the declining era of the Wild West.
Spoilers ahead for Red Dead Redemption 2!
6. Mary Linton
Broke Arthur’s Heart and Showed Him His Humanity
Mary Linton might well be the most significant woman in Arthur Morgan’s existence. From the moment they crossed paths, Arthur Morgan found himself captivated by Mary, a woman of refined grace. Despite their vastly different lives – one as an upstanding member of society and the other as an outlaw – their connection ran deep, and their longing for each other was mutual. Regrettably, societal expectations and their individual paths prevented them from uniting in matrimony, but their yearning for each other remained steadfast.
Inside you, Arthur, there’s a noble spirit struggling against a formidable foe, often coming out on top. But unfortunately, the foe usually prevails.
Mary’s affection for Arthur significantly shaped him as both a ruthless outlaw and a man with deep emotions. When she shattered his heart, it propelled him deeper into his criminal lifestyle and bitterness within the Van der Linde gang. This situation also highlighted that his unwavering loyalty to the gang surpassed his boundless love for Mary Linton, the woman he longed to become Mary Morgan.
5. Abigail Roberts
A Lovely Woman Who Shows Arthur the Responsibility of Family
In the late 1890s, I encountered a significant figure named Abigail Roberts. She was an orphaned woman who resorted to prostitution as a means of survival. Initially, there was a fleeting moment when I found myself harboring feelings for her. However, those feelings weren’t reciprocated. Instead, Abigail became deeply attached to John Marston and even bore his son, Jack Marston.
Arthur consistently shows kindness and consideration towards Abigail, as they both serve as reminders for him of what he tragically lost when a woman named Eliza gave birth to his son, Isaac. Unfortunately, a robbery took their lives while Arthur was away. This loss has left Arthur with a bitter disposition. Abigail, in essence, symbolizes the significance of cherishing and safeguarding a spouse and child, instead of neglecting them, much like the young Marston often does in 1899.
4. Hosea Matthews
Despite Being a Thief, Hosea Instilled Some Good Values in Arthur
Hosea Matthews served as one of Arthur’s adoptive fathers, not through biological ties, but through life lessons. After finding him as an orphan, both Hosea and Dutch took on a role in raising Arthur. While Dutch focused on teaching Arthur about wealth and the dangers of civilization, Hosea imparted values such as helping others, stealing from the right sources, and living sustainably off the land.
In Arthur, Hosea’s deep-seated respect for Native American Reservations, their inhabitants, and other integral aspects of Western societies is evident, though not quite as captivating as Dutch Van der Linde’s charismatic demeanor serving as a stand-in parental figure.
3. Dutch Van der Linde
Shaped Arthur’s World View and Made Him an Outlaw
It can hardly be overstated that Dutch Van der Linde played an indispensable role in shaping Arthur Morgan’s life. Dutch took Arthur under his wing, nurturing him like a son, and instilled in him essential skills such as reading, writing, shooting, and even fostering a deep-seated resentment towards civilization. Through this mentorship, Dutch molded Arthur into his steadfast ally, both as an exceptional gunslinger and as someone who shares his disdain for society and its norms to the same degree.
Dutch subtly influenced Arthur’s life since childhood, instilling right from wrong until he molded Arthur into the hardened outlaw he would remain loyal to. Although Dutch raised Arthur as his own, as Arthur grew older, he began to perceive Dutch not as a loving father figure but as a man primarily focused on survival.
2. Sister Calderon
A Nun Who Gives Arthur Some Optimism
Sister Calderon encounters Arthur Morgan late in his life, yet it’s evident she guided him to recognize a possibility he hadn’t considered before – that redemption wasn’t unattainable for him. In Saint Denis, Arthur comes across Sister Calderon, who imparts on him the idea that kindness and love permeate existence, even in the absence of religious beliefs. She further emphasizes that he can choose to act with purity or impurity based on what his heart dictates.
“Take a gamble that love exists, and do a loving act!”
Whenever I cross paths with Sister Calderon, she always imparts profound wisdom and philosophy, never once pressuring or criticizing me regarding my personal beliefs or morals. Instead, she speaks to a man lost in thought with a compassionate heart that instills within me a renewed sense of hope and optimism. This inspiration fuels my heroic actions and good deeds in the end.
1. John Marston
Showed Arthur How to be a Bigger Brother
Arthur Morgan and John Marston shared a childhood, yet it was John who was considered the younger sibling under the care of Hosea and Dutch. For Arthur, there has often been a sense of grudge towards John due to his perceived favored status – the charming little brother who seemed to escape consequences because of how highly Dutch and Hosea thought of him. This is why their relationship hasn’t always been harmonious, but they’ve consistently watched each other’s backs.
“You’re my brother.”
It may not occur immediately to Arthur, but he comes to understand that John possesses something he never could – a family, a life beyond the gang with Abigail and Jack. In the end, Arthur makes tremendous sacrifices to ensure his younger brother thrives, hoping that Marston won’t repeat the mistakes of their older brother.
