The popular TV series Squid Game revolves around a set of lethal games, where participants have the chance to earn a large sum of money, but at the risk of losing their lives in the process. Despite not being informed about the violent nature of the games upon signing up, the players must show great courage, as failing to do so could result in an abrupt, potentially unfair death.
In some instances, characters from the Squid Game series have shown significant cowardice, which frequently resulted in dire consequences for themselves or others. Interestingly, there are numerous players who let fear dictate their actions, impacting their game performance negatively. The following are some of the most timid players so far.
8. Cho Sang-Woo
A Different Type Of Coward
- Player: 218
- Death: One Lucky Day (Season 1, Episode 9)
Initially appearing unlike a typical timid individual, Cho Sang-woo nevertheless exhibited a disconcerting degree of hidden cowardice that has left many viewers exasperated. To illustrate, prior to participating in the games, he deceived all his clients out of their funds and even mortgaged his own mother’s store as security.
Beyond the exterior, Sang-woo consistently manipulates those around him for personal gain, even going as far as to push a fellow contestant off a glass platform in Glass Stepping Stones, coldly murdering a weakened Kang Sae-byeok, and taking his own life upon losing to Gi-Hun. What makes Cho Sang-woo particularly treacherous is his ability to leverage fear with intelligence, aiming to emerge victorious in every circumstance.
7. Park Yong-Sik
Keeps Putting His Mother In Danger
- Player: 007
- Still alive
Season 2 brings into play two captivating characters, a young man named Park Yong-Sik and his elderly mother, Jang Geum-ja. At first glance, Yong-Sik appears brave due to his readiness to interact with her, but beneath this facade lies a great deal of fear. In truth, Yong-Sik is deeply burdened by gambling debts and continues engaging in these perilous activities out of fear of the consequences he might face from loan sharks should he step back into society.
In simpler terms, his fear is causing him to recklessly endanger himself and his mother, without taking accountability for his decisions. Additionally, when he was separated from Geum-ja during Mingle, he didn’t make an effort to resist or rescue her, leaving it up to Gi-Hun and Oh Young-il to save her life.
6. Seon-Nyeo
A “Shaman” That Relies Way Too Much On Her Gods
- Player: 044
- Still alive
Seon-Nyeo, a character from Season 2, is quite unusual due to her frequent antagonistic behavior towards other players. She consistently portrayed herself as superior, attributing it to the divine powers she claimed to possess. However, it was during the Six-Legged Pentathlon that we truly saw her true nature unfold.
At the crucial moment when Seon-Nyeo was supposed to perform Spinning Top for her team, she started performing poorly instead. Rather than persevering, she broke down in tears and appealed to her deities, an act of cowardice that wasted valuable time. If it weren’t for Cho Hyun-ju’s bravery and determination, they might not have survived. After this incident, Seon-Nyeo attempted to project a tough image, but it fell flat, and few respected her after that pivotal moment.
5. Jang Deok-Su
Hiding Behind His Violent Gangster Persona
- Player: 101
- Death: VIPS (Season 1, Episode 7)
In the first season, Jang Deok-Su portrayed a merciless antagonist, with a chilling track record of cold-blooded murders that included his own henchmen. However, this menacing exterior belied his true character – he was in fact a cowardly individual who resorted to hurting others merely to ensure his own survival.
On two distinct instances, his cowardice was vividly demonstrated: first, when he pleaded for his life in the game Red Light, Green Light, and second, when he paralyzed with fear on Glass Stepping Stones, unwilling to proceed. His tremendous level of fear manifested again during a fifth game, when faced by Han Mi-nyeo. Regrettably, this fear resulted in their shared demise.
4. Kang Dae-Ho
His Trauma Completely Ruined The Rebellion
- Player: 388
- Still alive
Due to an unexpected halt midway through Season 2 of Squid Game, numerous aspects about its characters remain unexplored, with two intriguing questions arising: Was Kang Dae-ho indeed a member of the Marine Corps? and, is he suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)? Given that these queries have yet to be definitively addressed, Kang Dae-ho’s character came across as rather cowardly in the season finale.
In the crucial battle between Gi-Hun, the rebels, the Pink Soldiers, and the Front Man, Dae-ho was assigned to retrieve additional ammunition from their dormitory. Yet, in the chaos, he became overwhelmed and suffered a panic attack which stopped him from returning to aid his friends and allies. Regrettably, this hesitant choice led to many innocent lives being lost, and ultimately, the rebellion’s failure.
3. Kim Young-Mi
She Just Wanted To Go Home
- Player: 095
- Death: O X (Season 2, Episode 6)
Kim Young-mi serves as an illustration of how contestants often underestimate the reality they’ve signed up for until it’s already unfolding. Initially shy and fearful, she began expressing her desire to depart once she understood the true essence of these games, even voicing her longing to return home.
Initially, Young-mi successfully navigated the first two games and forged strong bonds with fellow players such as Cho Hyun-ju and Jang Geum-ja. However, her life was cut short during the third game titled Mingle, which is a real pity. Despite her ongoing apprehensions and anxiety, Young-mi was gradually growing more courageous in each game, but unfortunately, she met an untimely end due to a minor mishap.
2. Kang Mi-Na
Ruined Everything Just Because Of One Small Bee
- Player: 196
- Death: 001 (Season 2, Episode 3)
In a surprising twist, the series Squid Game showcases its unpredictability through the character of Kang Mi-na and her startling destiny. At first glance, it appeared as if she might play a pivotal role in Season 2, given her distinctive look and humorous exchanges with Thanos, but this was far from the truth.
Despite Gi-Hun’s efforts appearing to save everyone from peril in Red Light, Green Light, Mi-na’s sudden fright over a bee landing on her led to her moving when the doll was watching, resulting in instant fatal shots from the Pink Soldiers. This unfortunate incident marked the first death in the 2024 games and sparked widespread panic among the participants that ultimately caused even more casualties. It’s astonishing to contemplate how such a minor insect could trigger so much chaos and despair.
1. Park Min-Su
A Pushover Who Couldn’t Even Save His Only Friend
- Player: 125
- Still alive
As a cinephile, I can’t help but reflect on Park Min-Su’s heartrending character in “Squid Game”. This quiet, meek, and subservient soul spent Season 2 in the shadows of Thanos and Nam-gyu, often found obeying their cruel commands. Interestingly, his gentle spirit caught the eye of Se-mi, a young woman who valiantly tried to shield him from the tormentors.
Even though Se-mi was the only one who treated Min-su kindly and as an equal, he chose to betray her at Mingle, joining Thanos and Nam-gyu instead. To make matters worse, when presented with a chance to rescue her from Nam-gyu’s attacks during the special game, Min-su froze in fear. Sadly, Se-mi lost her life due to his cowardice, leading many to despise Park Min-su as one of the most detested characters in Squid Game.
