The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D is Now Official

AMD is adding a new gaming processor to its lineup: the Ryzen 7 9850X3D. This upcoming processor will be a bit more powerful than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but AMD hasn’t announced its price or when it will be available yet.

AMD’s next processor will work with current AM5 motherboards, such as the B850 and X870E models from companies like ASUS, Asrock, and MSI. It will also be compatible with older boards like the B650. If you have an existing AM5 motherboard and plan to upgrade to the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, AMD recommends checking for and installing any available BIOS updates first.

AMD Reveals New Ryzen 7 9850X3D Processor

At the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, AMD announced the Ryzen 7 9850X3D processor. It’s expected to be available in the first three months of 2026, though the exact date hasn’t been announced. The 9850X3D is an eight-core CPU with specs very similar to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. It will use 120 watts of power and have a base clock speed of 4.7 GHz. The main upgrade is a faster boost clock speed of 5.6 GHz, which is 400 MHz faster than the 9800X3D’s 5.2 GHz.

The 9850X3D processor will include a Radeon graphics card with two cores and will use AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology to improve gaming performance. AMD compared it to the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, claiming the 9850X3D could be up to 21% faster in games like Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. However, it’s best to wait for independent testing and reviews once the Ryzen 7 9850X3D is officially available before fully trusting AMD’s performance claims.

The Ryzen 7 9850X3D Will Launch at a Chaotic Time

AMD’s Ryzen X3D processors significantly boost gaming performance, but they have a few limitations for everyday use. The Ryzen 7 9850X3D can’t be overclocked, and its maximum boost speed is only slightly faster – by 100MHz – than the less expensive Ryzen 7 9700X, which currently costs $329. Considering the Ryzen 7 9800X3D originally sold for $449, the 9850X3D might be a bit more expensive.

AMD is launching a new processor at a difficult moment for PC gamers. Starting in late 2025, the cost of DRAM, a key component in computers, has sharply increased due to limited availability. This has caused the price of RAM – like 32GB kits – to jump from around $90 to over $360 in a matter of months. This price surge is also impacting gaming consoles, as both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S use AMD processors. With Xbox considering another price hike, it looks like the RAM shortage and rising costs could continue for some time.

Even though the cost of RAM and other computer parts is increasing, AMD’s release of the Ryzen 7 9850X3D shows they’re still committed to the AM5 platform. Along with the possible re-release of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card, this is giving a boost to current-generation PC components during a time of rising prices. The success of the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, despite the issues with RAM costs, will depend on how customers respond to its price and how well it performs compared to other options.
