The Argument For and Against Project Rene Having InZoi’s Character Creator

The Argument For and Against Project Rene Having InZoi's Character Creator

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for life simulators, I’ve seen my fair share of digital worlds and virtual characters. Having played every single Sims game since the original released back in 2000, I’m excited about the upcoming Project Rene, especially given its demo’s promising reception.

The game titled “InZoi” was developed by the South Korean studio KRAFTON. For a brief period, a demo of “InZoi” became accessible, showcasing its character creator. Although it was temporary, players managed to understand the mechanics, visuals, and overall atmosphere that KRAFTON intended for “InZoi”. The demo garnered generally favorable feedback, suggesting that “InZoi” is likely to be launched towards the end of 2024.

InZoi’s life simulation gameplay resembles The Sims 4, which is currently the leading title in this genre. Unlike The Sims 4, however, InZoi features a more hyperrealistic art style compared to the highly stylized and cartoonish design of the Sims series. As for Project Rene, we’re yet to see its character creator, so it remains uncertain whether its Sims will lean towards a more stylized or realistic aesthetic. Historically, games with stylized and cartoonish art styles tend to have longer-lasting appeal, while realistic games often deliver better graphics and attract more interest.

The Different Options for Project Rene’s Character Creator

The original game in the “The Sims” series was launched in February 2000, at a time when video game technology wasn’t advanced enough to achieve a hyperrealistic aesthetic. Instead, the series opted for a more playful, cartoonish style that has been consistent across its subsequent installments. Despite various changes in the art style throughout “The Sims 2”, “The Sims 3”, and “The Sims 4”, the developers chose to embrace this cartoony aesthetic rather than moving away from it. The distinctive art style of “The Sims 4” features simplified shading and blocks of color, further distancing itself from any sense of realism.

Project Rene has yet to unveil its character creator or showcase much of its visual style. Modern gaming platforms are capable of supporting advanced art styles, and it’s possible that Project Rene could adopt a more realistic approach similar to InZoi, an innovation that has garnered praise from those who have tried its demo. High-quality graphics, known as hyperrealism, are frequently appealing to gamers.

Altering the artistic approach for Project Rene could also make it unique compared to The Sims 4, both of which will continue to exist when Project Rene is introduced. Having two games from the The Sims series together, it would be advantageous for Project Rene to have its own recognizable style and character.

The Drawbacks of Hyper-Realism in Project Rene’s Character Creator

However, hyperrealistic graphics also have their drawbacks. The art style can age quickly, and it can be difficult to form a distinct visual identity. As Project Rene is a game in a series, it would also be odd to have such a dramatic departure in art style from previous games in The Sims, as none of the previous games were hyperrealistic. While a different art style would distinguish Project Rene from The Sims 4, having it stand completely apart from the other games in The Sims and be unrecognizable as a Sims game would also not be a good thing.

Hyper-realistic approaches in character creation can lead to challenges, as they may inadvertently drift towards the “unsettling zone,” often referred to as the uncanny valley. This phenomenon occurs when a creation resembles a human, but has slight imperfections that make it feel odd or unsettling. By fine-tuning significant facial aspects like eyes, nose, and mouth, creators can inadvertently produce characters that are disconcerting. To prevent this, Project Rene’s character creator would require significant attention to detail if it were to employ hyper-realism.
