I’m feeling rather uninspired at the moment.”
This phrase conveys a similar sentiment as “I’m bored,” but in a more polite and sophisticated manner that may be better suited for adult conversation or formal settings. It implies a lack of interest in one’s current activities, much like being bored does, but with a touch of delicacy.
For individuals who enjoy anime, when they find themselves in need of something to fill a moment of leisure, they might opt for shows that evoke nostalgia or offer an uncomplicated watch – perfect for setting the mood rather than actively entertaining. These selections could either alleviate boredom or potentially enhance it, depending on the viewer’s preferences. The ranking will be determined by how relaxing these anime prove to be.
Pokemon
A Nostalgia Trip
In my youth during the ’90s, I was among those who were captivated by the Pokémon anime. Unlike many video game adaptations, it stood out as a superior product due to its departure from direct game translations and the creation of an original narrative. The initial seasons, such as Indigo League, Orange Islands, and Johto League, hold a special place for those who grew up with them, offering both action and humor that can be enjoyed even when one is half-asleep or fully engaged.
Case Closed
An Anime Procedural
You’ll find many popular comfort police procedurals, such as NCIS and Law & Order, that are enjoyed by mystery enthusiasts for repeated viewing. Case Closed, an anime series, fits this category but with a unique twist: its protagonist, a teenage detective, undergoes transformation into a child. Yet, the character’s desire to solve crimes remains constant. The mysteries in each episode typically last no longer than a few episodes, and the plot twists can be rather outlandish yet captivating. Since individual episodes often don’t impact the overarching storyline significantly, viewers can easily start watching at any point.
Dragon Ball Z
Nonsensical Anime Fights At Their Finest
In simpler terms, “Dragon Ball Z” is a popular Shonen anime known for its action-packed fight sequences, where the storyline often takes a backseat. You tune in, witness Goku annihilate another extraterrestrial adversary, and then transition to the next story arc of “Dragon Ball Z”.
After the Cell arc, some might find it repetitive, yet gracious, but what fans truly crave isn’t logical plot progression. Instead, they revel in watching Goku and his combatants overpower villains. This spectacle offers tranquility even when one’s thoughts are hazy or unclear.
Cowboy Bebop
Jump In At Any Point
In simpler terms, Cowboy Bebop, similar to Case Closed, features fewer episodes centered around a main storyline, making it captivating and hard to resist. This could be one reason why it remained on Adult Swim for such a long time, alongside its status as an exemplary work demonstrating the art of creating timeless anime. Even the seemingly weaker episodes could keep viewers engrossed the moment the theme song, with its powerful trumpets, began to play. Cowboy Bebop is an ideal choice for those seeking engaging entertainment, even during idle moments, due to its consistent delivery of high-quality episodes.
Aggretsuko
Office Life
Aggretsuko offers shorter episodes compared to typical anime series, making it a convenient choice for binge-watching. Moreover, its protagonist, Retsuko, experiences a common struggle with a monotonous office job and frequent disrespect from her boss. Despite the general indifference of the world around her and limited support from colleagues, she finds solace in singing metal music to alleviate stress – an intriguing aspect introduced early on. Although the series can be tense at times, the humor within Aggretsuko is sure to bring a smile to viewers as they delve into its engaging storyline.
Great Teacher Onizuka
From Gangster To Educator
As an observer, I find it intriguing how Great Teacher Onizuka seamlessly blends humor with life’s profound lessons. This might seem unexpected, considering the notorious past of its main character, Eikichi Onizuka, who was once a gangster. Yet, he managed to transform his life and secure a homeroom teaching position.
Initially, people don’t immediately show him respect, but he invests time to understand his students and address their issues. There are heartwarming instances, however, Onizuka displays some unusual behaviors and borderline creepy antics that wouldn’t be tolerated in a typical school setting, creating comedic situations.
Crayon Shin-Chan
Too Bizarre For Words
The long-running animated series titled “Crayon Shin-chan” often appears to be geared towards children, given its young protagonist Shin. However, it stands out among anime due to its explicit humor, with frequent scenes involving Shin’s antics with his butt on screen. Despite this, the show maintains a silly and endearing quality, as Shin explores the world with an innocent curiosity typical of a child.
Upon airing its dubbed version on Adult Swim, the adaptation of the show had limited success. For those seeking an invigorating watch, certain episodes of the infamous Crayon Shin-chan are highly recommended. The localization process was remarkably intense, and it’s truly astonishing when you experience it for yourself.
FLCL
A Short Anime To Watch On Repeat
FLCL is a compact, six-episode Japanese animated series that delivers an exceptional viewing experience throughout. Its distinctive visual aesthetic sets it apart, while its storyline is oddly captivating. It abounds with Easter Eggs for animation enthusiasts to appreciate, featuring references as diverse as Lupin the 3rd humor and nods to South Park.
Revisiting it never feels old, much like slipping back into my favorite chair and cueing up an episode of Cowboy Bebop – a series that’s long been a favorite on Adult Swim. Each viewing of FLCL still manages to feel fresh, even after countless watches.
