As a longtime anime enthusiast and someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich worlds of these shows, I can wholeheartedly say that if you’re a fan of Hunter x Hunter, there are several other anime series that you might find equally captivating.
Over time, an increasing number of individuals have come to acknowledge that anime is a valid form of entertainment, understanding that not all anime caters to children. Among these people, shonen anime is particularly popular due to its focus on young adult audiences. However, it’s important to note that many shonen series tackle mature themes. One such example is “Hunter X Hunter,” which initially appeared as a manga in 1998 and has seen two adaptations into anime thus far. The 2011 adaptation delved deeper into the story compared to its previous incarnation.
Hunter X Hunter tells the story of Gon Freecss, a young boy on a journey to become a professional Hunter, much like his father. Along the way, he gathers companions such as Killua, who plays a significant role in the series. Hunter X Hunter stands out with its dark undertones and impressive action scenes that often involve Nen abilities. The show boasts a dedicated fanbase, and there are undoubtedly other anime that fans of Hunter X Hunter would find appealing.
Fall 2024 Anime That Hunter X Hunter Fans Might Enjoy
Although the “Hunter X Hunter” manga is gradually releasing fresh material, it seems a new anime series may be quite some time coming. Fervently hoping for the day when Gon and Killua regain the spotlight, fans might find solace in exploring seasonal anime with a comparable vibe during this interim. Fall 2024 offers a handful of shows that could pique interest (apart from “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Conflict” ), even though they might not be too much like “HxH”.
- Orb: On the Movements of the Earth – Ok, this is a bit of a strange one. A historical drama revolving around investigating Earth’s place in the universe is a far cry from Hunter x Hunter‘s fantasy shonen epicness, and anyone specifically craving a cool power system or high-octane fights will need to look elsewhere. However, Orb works surprisingly well as a companion piece to HxH, and that is not just due to Madhouse giving the shows a similar look. Orb follows a myriad of characters who are willing to risk everything to decipher how the universe operates, an endeavor that could spell their death at the hands of the church.
- Dandadan – The biggest and arguably the best anime of Fall 2024, Dandadan is an absolute thrill ride. That said, it shares very little in common with HxH, besides the fact that both are based on manga that represent shonen stories at their peak. Still, the two anime tell gripping action-driven stories that do not neglect character development and are built upon a friendship between two incredibly likable protagonists. Momo and Ken’s dynamic is an absolute treat, with the two supporting each other through aliens, turbo grannies, and bullying.
- Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? 5 – This should stand for the full series, but DanMachi honestly took a while to fully hit its stride. While the first three seasons are enjoyable, they are not consistent enough to inspire an enthusiastic endorsement; fortunately, DanMachi turned a corner with season 4, producing a 2-cour run packed with fantastic fights, intensity, and a great core dynamic. Season 5 has not quite reached the same level as its predecessor, but it is building steam nicely, while also delivering a fascinating premise fueled by an extremely powerful and dangerous character.
24 Tokyo Ghoul
The Ghouls & Chimera Ants Are Very Similar
In the world of Tokyo Ghoul, there are beings resembling humans who have a carnivorous nature, feeding on human tissue, much like the Chimera Ants portrayed in Hunter x Hunter. These creatures possess unique abilities – each one has the capacity to use an organ called a Kagune for predation, and their bodies show remarkable resilience against harm.
Tokyo Ghoul stands out as a significantly more brutal and intricate series compared to HxH, yet it remains just as entertaining. Initially a typical human, Ken Kaneki, much like Gon, finds himself grappling with the challenges of adapting to a world transformed by extraordinary abilities after undergoing a similar transformation.
23 Blue Exorcist
The Main Characters Have Father Issues & Strive To Become Stronger
Blue Exorcist takes place in a universe divided into two realms: one inhabited by humans, the other governed by Satan in the demonic dimension. Demons can infiltrate the human world by taking over hosts, and it falls to the Exorcists to expel them. The narrative primarily revolves around Rin and Yukio Okumura, twin brothers who are actually the offspring of Satan.
Rin received the same formidable power as their father, yet wasn’t tainted by evil due to being brought up by a potent exorcist. However, when their biological father slays the man who raised them, Rin sets out on a path to master the art of exorcism, aiming to overcome him. Despite having contrasting bonds with their fathers, both Rin and Gon dedicate themselves to growing stronger.
22 Kaiju No. 8
Focus On Teamwork & Sacrifice
2024’s highly anticipated series, “Kaiju No. 8,” offers numerous reasons for its buzz and deserves a warm endorsement, even for those who might feel battle shonen has become repetitive. Unlike typical stories, the protagonist, Kafka, is an adult in his early ’30s, still pursuing a dream that seems unlikely by common standards. The plot unfolds in a world where humanity faces frequent attacks from gigantic monsters, known as kaiju. These creatures often appear unexpectedly and wreak havoc on the landscape. To combat these threats, Japan maintains a Special Defense Force. Kafka dreams of joining this force but has always failed their entrance exams. However, his life takes an extraordinary turn when he inadvertently swallows a kaiju, granting him unique abilities. He must conceal these powers to avoid being perceived as a danger to humanity.
Showcasing thrilling action, endearing characters, and an entertaining concept (who wouldn’t enjoy watching massive monsters wreaking havoc in cities?), Kaiju No. 8 offers a delightful experience, which is all an anime essentially requires. Notably, the Defense Force’s role isn’t much different from that of Hunters; they both serve as humanity’s liaison with the mysterious and perilous unknown. While Kafka holds significant power and clearly takes the lead role, the anime underscores the value of teamwork and synchronicity, a theme that resonates strongly with Hunter X Hunter.
Kaiju No. 8
season 2 is confirmed to be in production

21 Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Another Anime That Shouldn’t Be Judged By Its Initial Episodes
In many cases, “dark” anime are labeled as genre subversions, but this isn’t always correct. For instance, while Hunter X Hunter challenges some expectations of battle shonen, it still maintains many standard elements of the genre, even if they’re presented in less traditional ways. Similarly, Puella Magi Madoka Magica follows a similar pattern for magical girls, presenting a narrative that initially resembles the genre’s typical tropes, but ultimately proves to be much more disturbing than the average mahou shoujo series.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but sing praises for Puella Magi Madoka Magica, a beacon in the world of “dark” magical girl anime. It doesn’t just hold its own amidst countless other titles; it stands out as the epitome of this genre’s storytelling prowess. The narrative delves deep into the lives of magical girls, their adorable companions, and their adversaries, all while tackling weighty themes such as despair and compulsion.
20 Hell’s Paradise
Similar To Hunter X Hunter’s Greed Island Arc
Back in April 2023, I found myself immersed in the gripping world of “Hell’s Paradise.” As a fan, I can tell you it’s all about a young ninja assassin named Gabimaru, who was snatched away from his family at a tender age to be molded into an elite killing machine by none other than the chief of Iwagakure village. He earned the chilling moniker “Gabimaru The Hollow,” not because he’s empty inside, but due to his remarkable lack of emotions.
In the course of a mission, he gets arrested and faces execution, but the Shogun grants him clemency under one condition: he needs to locate the Elixir of Life and bring it back, along with Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, a female guard. Along with other convicts, our protagonist embarks on a journey to an island in pursuit of the elixir. This adventure bears resemblance to the location in HxH’ (Hunter x Hunter) and the violence is as intense as in Hell’s Paradise.
19 Bleach
Both Share Unique Character Designs & Power Systems
At one point, Bleach was included among the Big Three, a term that refers to Shounen Jump’s most renowned series. The protagonist is Ichigo Kurosaki, and the story revolves around the struggle between Soul Reapers, Hollows, and Quincy. Each race showcases distinct spiritual powers, and the characters often have distinctive appearances, much like in Hunter x Hunter.
The power dynamics in Bleach are equally intricate as those in HxH’s Nen system, making certain battles quite engaging. Similar to HxH, Bleach has its comedic moments, yet it doesn’t hesitate to delve into intense themes and violence. Although the original series is excellent, Thousand-Year Blood War stands out as the pinnacle of Bleach, offering nearly continuous action that surpasses most other shonen anime in terms of intensity.
18 Jujutsu Kaisen
Cursed Energy & Nen Are Quite Similar
In the anime “Jujutsu Kaisen,” young protagonist Itadori Yuji unwittingly houses Ryomen Sukuna, a formidable Demon King. Remarkably, Yuji learns to manage this powerful entity to some extent. As a result, he is escorted to Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School, where he refines his abilities with the aim of expelling the demon when needed.
As a devoted fan, I’d say that Jujutsu Kaisen feels like an exhilarating fusion of adventure, with its demonic entities bearing a striking resemblance to the monstrous beings you’d encounter in Hunter x Hunter. The pulse-pounding action in Jujutsu Kaisen revolves around these cursed tools, and characters who wield cursed energy and employ cursed techniques – a concept that echoes the manipulation of Nen by its users.
17 Made In Abyss
Both Are Stories About Adventure & Searching For A Parent
Made in Abyss might seem like a cheerful anime aimed at kids, but it tackles some heavy subjects, much like Hunter x Hunter. Similar to Hunter x Hunter, several characters in Made In Abyss face grim outcomes. The protagonist, Riko, embarks on an adventure filled with exploration and growth, all while looking for a missing parent, which mirrors Gon’s quest for his father.
Riko and Reg embark on a treacherous voyage into the depths of a vast chasm, where they stumble upon artifacts and perils, often finding themselves in harrowing circumstances that push them to the brink of despair and death. The anime series “Descent into the Abyss” offers captivating storytelling, and it is meticulously animated.
16 Mob Psycho 100
Similar Abilities & Comedic Elements
The anime titled “Mob Psycho 100” revolves around the character Shigeo Kageyama, who suddenly finds himself with potent psychic abilities. Unlike many others, Shigeo decides to keep his powers under control due to their potentially harmful nature, and he dedicates himself to learning how to use them effectively.
From my perspective, Mob Psycho 100, much like you’d expect, showcases a plethora of intriguing powers that bear a resemblance to the diverse Nen abilities in Hunter x Hunter. Similar to HxH, this series can be downright hilarious at times, and while Shigeo’s narrative may not delve as deeply as Gon’s, his journey is undeniably captivating and worth experiencing.
15 The Promised Neverland
Dark Like Hunter X Hunter’s Chimera Ant Arc
It could be argued that the Chimera Ant arc in “HxH” might be its most compelling arc, given how grim and intense it is. Remarkably, “The Promised Neverland” shares a similar level of darkness as this arc does. This series centers around a group of orphans who uncover a chilling truth: their caretaker isn’t as loving as they appear; instead, she’s been raising them to be the main course for demons.
In The Promised Neverland, Emma serves as the main protagonist and strives to guide her companions towards safety after discovering a dreadful secret. One aspect that keeps readers hooked on this series is that none of the orphans have any magical or supernatural talents that could aid them in their predicament.
14 Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Both Have Dark & Comedic Tones
As the narrative unfolds in HxH, it becomes increasingly intense, tackling heavy topics with maturity, yet maintaining a balance by interspersing these moments with humor and levity. Similarly, Katekyo Hitman Reborn skillfully blends serious and comical elements, making it a suitable recommendation for fans of HxH.
In simpler terms, Tsuna is our primary character who’s navigating life’s complexities as a rather bashful young fellow. He encounters a diminutive assassin who proposes he takes over the Vongolla mafia empire. Accepting this offer sets him on a tough voyage that aids his growth. Throughout this journey, Tsuna engages in fights against adversaries and struggles to conquer his self-doubts.
13 Black Clover
Asta & Yuno Are Similar To Killua & Gon
As an ardent admirer, I’d express that the heart of Black Clover revolves around me and another orphan named Yuno, who share the same ambition – to ascend as the Wizard King. Unlike Yuno, who is naturally gifted in magic with immense power, I was born devoid of magical abilities. Instead, I channel my efforts into honing my physical prowess. Over time, a camaraderie, tinged with friendly competition, blossoms between us.
Asta and Yuno might not mirror Killua and Gon exactly, yet their bond shares certain resemblances. The magical system in Black Clover, referred to as Mana, enables mages to obtain a grimoire at age 15, which they can use to cast particular spells. This concept bears some semblance to Nen, a power system from the series Hunter x Hunter, where many users learn about it following their successful completion of the Hunter Exam.
12 My Hero Academia
Tons Of Action & Similarities Between Izuku & Gon
In my gaming world, an exhilarating narrative unfolds – one where nearly everyone is gifted with extraordinary abilities known as Quirks, similar to the Nen system. These Quirks come with their own unique set of rules and limitations, making each power a fascinating blend of strength and challenge.
In the anime titled “MHA“, there’s a lot of exciting action that fans of “Hunter x Hunter” are likely to appreciate, and it also features many touching moments. The story revolves around Izuku Midoriya, a boy who doesn’t possess a superpower (Quirk) at birth, but later acquires one when his idol passes his powers to him. Izuku’s perseverance mirrors that of Gon, so fans of “Hunter x Hunter” are bound to find him relatable.
11 Demon Slayer
The Demons Are Similar To The Chimera Ants
Following his father’s passing, Tanjiro assumes the role of their family’s breadwinner. One fateful day, while he is absent, the demon king slaughters his loved ones, turning his sister Nezuko into a demon. Remarkably, she retains her humanity, and Tanjiro makes a solemn pledge to heal her and seek vengeance for his family’s death. To fulfill this promise, he enlists in the Demon Slayer Corps.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve found myself deeply engrossed in the captivating world of Demon Slayer. It’s brimming with engaging characters, pulsating action, and even a touch of humor that keeps me hooked. Yet, it doesn’t shy away from tugging at my heartstrings, which is a trait it shares with Hunter x Hunter.
10 No Game, No Life
Very Similar To The Greed Island Arc
Back in 2014, “No Game, No Life” made its entrance, and ever since then, it’s been hard to overlook its greatness among the numerous Isekai anime out there. With just 12 episodes, it truly shines as one of the best in this genre. The story revolves around Sora and Shiro, a duo of step-siblings who are famed for their unmatched skills in online gaming. As a devoted fan, I can confidently say that this series is a must-watch!
One day, the siblings receive an invitation for a chess match from a deity hailing from another dimension. Upon their victory, they are transported to a realm where all aspects revolve around various games. Sora excels in strategic moves and intuitive readings, while his sister showcases her prowess in logic and numerical computations. Fans of the Greed Island Arc in ‘Hunter x Hunter’ might also find this anime engaging.
9 Seven Deadly Sins
Both Have Large Casts & Tons Of Action
In a rephrased manner, “Seven Deadly Sins” chronicles the journey of seven powerful individuals who initially find themselves separated and accused of treason. As the plot unfolds, their innocence is proven, and they are exonerated. Subsequently, these seven formidable characters engage in battles against influential figures from both the Demon and Goddess Factions.
Similar to the thrilling anime “Hunter x Hunter,” “Seven Deadly Sins” is an action-filled series set in an expansive universe. Much like its counterpart, it boasts a vast array of characters that make lasting impacts. Additionally, both narratives are rich with tactical action sequences.
8 Naruto
Kurapika & Sasuke Have Similar Traits & Backstories
For approximately ten years, Naruto was a highly acclaimed anime series that has captivated audiences. It’s the kind of show that novice anime enthusiasts would find appealing. The story revolves around a village orphan with an ambition to be Hokage, the village leader. Through his journey, he not only realizes his dream but also becomes a hero and one of the strongest ninjas ever known in history.
In both “Naruto” and “Hunter x Hunter”, key characters hail from clans that were tragically eliminated, and they possess remarkable eyes with distinct powers. The narrative of “Naruto” further emphasizes the importance of friendship, while each confrontation involves some form of ninjutsu, which shares similarities with the Nen battles in “Hunter x Hunter”.
7 One Piece
Luffy Is Just As Likeable As Gon
One Piece is widely regarded as the best shonen anime ever made, and it definitely justifies its acclaim. This sprawling narrative revolves around Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirate crew. Over the past two decades, viewers of this series have encountered countless intriguing characters, some even modeled after real-life historical figures.
Luffy dreams of becoming the Pirate King, much like Gon desires to emulate his father’s greatness as a Hunter, and both characters are highly endearing main characters. While Hunter X Hunter features Nen, One Piece boasts Devil Fruits that bestow diverse abilities.
6 Dr. Stone
The Main Characters Achieve Great Things While Exploring The World
Senku Ishigami may have an incredibly impractical hairstyle, but he is arguably one of the smartest characters in all anime, and he is the heart and soul of Dr. Stone. He and his friends were ordinary teenagers living in the modern day, but a strange phenomenon has petrified every human on Earth for thousands of years.
Eventually, Senku manages to free himself from the stone age and employs his brilliant scientific intellect in an attempt to rescue the rest of humanity. Although Dr. Stone may not be as action-packed as Hunter X Hunter, both series share a common theme: their characters are on a journey to accomplish extraordinary feats while navigating through a world that is largely unexplored.
5 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Both Series Have Very Well-Developed Characters
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood takes audiences on an emotional journey filled with ups and downs, earning respect for its well-developed characters and compelling narrative. The story follows the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, who embark on a quest to regain their physical forms. However, their journey eventually leads them to face off against a potential deity and his supernatural minions.
In alchemy, as per the rule of equal exchange, it significantly differs from Nen; however, the fights in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood remain captivating to watch. Both shows boast intricately crafted characters, making them enjoyable for fans of Hunter X Hunter.
