Stories often feature a main character who could end up with multiple love interests, and it’s common for these relationships to be undefined or ambiguous. Anime takes this idea further with the “harem” genre, where one character is the center of attention for many potential partners. This formula has proven popular for a long time, and there’s now a large selection of harem anime available for those interested in seeing over-the-top romantic situations and exaggerated attraction.
This type of show can sometimes be overly provocative or even crude, focusing heavily on harem tropes. However, there’s nothing inherently wrong with anime that explores mature themes, as long as it’s done tastefully. If you’re interested in getting started, these upcoming shows are some of the best harem anime available, offering a wide range of stories – from serious dramas and funny parodies to action-packed adventures.
Reverse harem anime have their own discussion.
I keep the list of top harem anime fresh by updating it every month, so you’ll see changes as new shows come out and old ones fade. I also make sure to include older, well-regarded series that might not have been on the list originally. It’s a lot of anime to go through, and I’ve done my best to be comprehensive!

40. Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs
MyAnimeList: 7.31
Many isekai anime feature a harem of characters, but often these combinations don’t work very well. They tend to highlight the most basic elements of both isekai and harem stories, leading to unremarkable shows like In Another World With My Smartphone or The Fruit of Evolution. However, there are exceptions – some series successfully combine isekai and harem elements, making both genres even better. A handful of comedies even cleverly poke fun at the tropes of both.
Although The Eminence in Shadow is very popular and features many female characters, its main character, Cid, is so different from typical harem leads that it doesn’t quite fit the bill as a good example. Luckily, Trapped in a Dating Sim is a solid harem anime that playfully satirizes the usual clichés of the genre, as well as isekai and otome games.
A man reluctantly finishes a dating simulation game for his sister, only to die immediately after and be reborn within that same game world as a minor character. Knowing the game’s events, Leon hopes for a peaceful life, but quickly finds himself caught up in drama. He unexpectedly gains the attention of several women, including the main heroine and villainess, who surprisingly begin a sweet romance of their own.
39. The Testament of Sister New Devil
MyAnimeList: 6.68
I usually like to judge anime – or anything, really – on its own merits, without constantly comparing it to other things. But rewatching The Testament of Sister New Devil recently, I couldn’t help but feel like it was a weaker version of High School DxD. They have a lot in common – similar character designs, a mix of fanservice, action, and a little bit of romance. Both shows feature a male lead who isn’t helpless, and he ends up with a group of girls falling for him after discovering some kind of special power. Interestingly, both series also have a prominent redhead among the main female characters. And if you’re familiar with harem anime, you’ll notice both of these lean pretty heavily into ecchi content – they’re definitely more suggestive than a lot of others out there.
Both High School DxD and The Testament of Sister New Devil feature harem elements, but they differ in action quality. High School DxD offers a good balance, while The Testament of Sister New Devil is weaker in that area. This anime is really only worth watching if you’re looking for a show with a lot of fanservice, as that’s its main appeal. The characters are okay, but they’re fairly simple and predictable – the main character, Basara, for example, is just a typical ‘cool’ type.
38. Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest
MyAnimeList: 6.72 (Season 1)
First impressions are crucial, and the Arifureta anime didn’t quite succeed at its launch. Although the original light novel and manga are popular, the first season of the anime felt rushed and had noticeably weak animation. Later seasons were a bit better, but the anime adaptation still hasn’t reached the quality of the source material. However, if you’re just looking for a typical ‘isekai’ power fantasy, Arifureta is watchable.
Arifureta has a somewhat unusual take on the harem genre, as the romantic elements don’t really develop until later in the story. Initially, the focus is on Hajime and Yue, and they have a great connection that feels like a true partnership. Because of this, the introduction of other potential love interests can feel disruptive to their established relationship, even though those characters are well-written themselves.
37. There’s No Freaking Way I’ll be Your Lover! Unless…
MyAnimeList: 7.70
I’m honestly a little unsure if There’s No Freaking Way I’ll be Your Lover! Unless… fits better as a traditional harem or a reverse harem. Yuri harems aren’t common, and this anime has elements of both. I decided to include it because I think viewers who enjoy harem anime with male leads will likely enjoy this one too.
Renako is hoping to leave her awkward middle school days behind and finally make some friends when she starts high school. She gets a chance when Mai, a popular girl, helps her out. However, Mai is interested in being more than friends, which makes Renako hesitant. They agree to explore both a friendship and something more, but things become even trickier when other girls start showing interest in Renako.
The series There’s No Freaking Way I’ll be Your Lover! Unless… is genuinely funny, and it’s nice to see a main character who clearly recognizes they’re being pulled into a harem situation.
36. Amagami SS
MyAnimeList: 7.28 (Season 1)
Unlike many harem anime, Amagami SS features a main character who feels more realistic. Junichi Tachibana struggles with social anxiety after a painful experience with a past date. Things start to look up when, unexpectedly, several girls begin to develop feelings for him.
Adding to Junichiro’s problems, each of the girls represents a typical anime high school character. Amagami SS offers a sweet and innocent approach to the often more adult harem genre, and it usually avoids overly suggestive content.
35. In Another World With My Smartphone
MyAnimeList: 6.10 (Season 1)
I’ve been watching In Another World With My Smartphone, and honestly, it doesn’t really stand out. The idea of someone being reborn in another world with their phone is pretty standard for this type of show, almost to the point where it feels like a joke, though it doesn’t try to be funny. It’s not an action-packed anime, and that’s fine, but it doesn’t offer much else either. The humor is very mild and safe, and that pretty much describes all the characters too – they’re all just…safe.
What makes In Another World With My Smartphone appealing? It’s a lighthearted and relaxing adventure that’s meant to be a simple escape. The main character, Touya, doesn’t face many challenges and quickly gathers a group of devoted admirers. The story strongly suggests a traditional harem ending, and as long as you know what to expect, it can be quite enjoyable.
34. Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls
MyAnimeList: 6.93
It’s true that many harem anime include some level of suggestive content. In fact, some of the most well-known series heavily feature fanservice, and that’s perfectly fine when handled tastefully. Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls is a popular example of this, though it’s not as explicit as some other shows that are best enjoyed privately.
As the title suggests, Monster Musume follows a man who begins living with several monster girls, hoping to help them adjust to life among humans. Instead of relying on common character tropes, the anime features a wide variety of fantasy races – including well-known ones like lamias, harpies, and centaurs, as well as more unique creatures like arachne. While the characters’ personalities are fairly typical for a harem anime, Monster Musume stands out with its incredibly diverse and creative character designs. I quickly found myself enjoying the show simply to see what new race would appear next.
33. Tsugumomo
MyAnimeList: 7.03 (Season 1)
Harem anime often gets a bad rap, but it’s helpful to understand what to expect. While some stories can be surprisingly thoughtful, most are designed for lighthearted fun, with comedy, action, and fanservice. They typically follow familiar patterns, building on existing comedy or action storylines and adding multiple female love interests. Tsugumomo is a prime example of this genre – a must-watch for fans, but easily skipped by those who aren’t interested.
Tsugumomo is a show centered around objects that have come to life. It follows Kazuya, who finds himself connected to Kiriha, a spirit who manifests as a girl and was once his mother’s obi (a type of sash). Another girl, Kukuri, soon becomes part of their dynamic, and they aren’t alone for long. The series blends action-packed battles against various spirits – similar to a typical shonen anime – with lighthearted, comedic moments. While the anime is generally average, it features more fanservice than many other harem shows. The second season is a slight improvement over the first.
32. Trinity Seven
MyAnimeList: 7.04
While not as popular as romantic comedies, some anime series combine the harem genre with action, attempting to mix appealing visuals with exciting battles. Though shows like High School DxD and Date a Live do this well, they’re the exception, and most action-harem anime don’t quite succeed. Series such as Blade Dance of the Elementalers, Demon King Daimao, The Testament of Sister New Devil, and Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero are mainly for dedicated harem fans, and their action sequences aren’t particularly strong. They aren’t bad shows overall, but they appeal to a very specific audience.
If you’re looking for a show that combines romance and action, Trinity Seven is a good example of how to do it well. The fight scenes aren’t amazing compared to other action anime, but within the ‘battle harem’ genre, it stands out. The magic system is a little complex, but interesting, and the concept of characters representing the seven deadly sins is clever. The main character, Arata, is a strong and straightforward leader, and the girls are similarly upfront about their feelings.
31. The Shiunji Family Children
MyAnimeList: 7.05
Because it’s based on a manga by the creator of Rent-a-Girlfriend, The Shiunji Family Children was bound to get some attention – particularly since it features a harem of adopted siblings. Like many viewers, I initially checked it out expecting a spectacularly messy show, the kind that’s wonderfully ‘bad’. And honestly, I enjoy a good trashy anime!
Despite its premise, The Shiunji Family Children is actually quite mild and, frankly, unremarkable. It mostly follows the typical formula for harem anime, without taking many chances, aside from the unusual family dynamic. Even that aspect isn’t explored very deeply, as the sisters quickly become interested in someone they grew up believing was their brother.
Although it might not be a dramatically complex story, The Shiunji Family Children is a thoroughly pleasant example of its genre. The characters are generally appealing, and the female characters are well-developed enough to feel unique. The protagonist, Arata, is a dependable lead who genuinely tries to do what’s best for his family.
