The Best Horror Games With Only One Enemy

As a seasoned gaming aficionado with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that these horror games truly know how to get under one’s skin! The tales spun by these digital narratives are as chilling as they are intriguing.

Many terrifying video games have earned cult-status through diverse factors such as gripping narratives, challenging conundrums, and cinematic immersion, yet what truly captivates players in a hit horror game is an indelible villain. These adversaries can be anything from grotesquely frightening creatures to menacing supernatural forces. While most games offer multiple enemies to face off against, a single relentless antagonist is often enough to create a compelling conflict.

Games like “Resident Evil” maintain variety in gameplay by introducing multiple secondary antagonists, especially in later titles such as “Resident Evil 7” and “Resident Evil Village”. However, not all horror games demand numerous boss battles or confrontations. In fact, focusing on the intensity of a single, dominant enemy can create an equally significant — if not more impactful — fear factor compared to a large roster of adversaries. Here are several excellent horror games that feature only one primary antagonist.

1 Amnesia: The Bunker

Henri Must Fight To Survive Against The Beast

In the game titled “Amnesia: The Bunker“, you play as a French soldier named Henri Clément. He unexpectedly ends up in an underground shelter, sharing the space with a grotesque, humanoid entity called “The Beast.” While he interacts with mutated rats and hostile German soldiers, The Beast remains ever-present and menacing. The game’s scripted moments are minimal, so you’ll often find The Beast actively pursuing Henri outside of predefined confrontations.

In the shelter, Henri can keep The Beast at bay by maintaining the generators’ operation. He needs to move around within the shelter and replenish the generators with fuel whenever necessary. If the fuel supply depletes, the bunker will fall into darkness, allowing The Beast to pursue Henri until power is restored again. Although Germans and rodents pose challenges for Henri, the main danger lurking is The Beast, a light-sensitive creature that had massacred the French garrison before Henri arrived.

2 P.T.

A Nameless Protagonist Encounters A Hostile Ghost

In P.T., players take on the role of an unnamed character who finds themselves in a spooky mansion, trapped in a continuous loop through a corridor that always forms an L-shape. To advance, players need to decipher mysterious riddles within the surroundings and confront terrifying supernatural events. After finishing a loop, the corridor undergoes modifications like added decorations, wall inscriptions, and the eventual appearance of Lisa, a menacing spirit.

In contrast to previous iterations of the game “Silent Hill”, the player doesn’t possess any defensive abilities towards Lisa in this version. Yet, Lisa can’t inflict physical damage on the player either. There’s a moment where you might encounter a jump scare within a particular section that will reset the current loop. Additionally, at one point, another ghost, distinct from Lisa, may be observed peering over the balcony of the mansion’s upper level, but the players are unable to engage with it. Essentially, the horror in “P.T.” predominantly stems from the oppressive presence of Lisa as a constant threat.

3 Slender: The Eight Pages

Slenderman Hunts An Unknown Protagonist Alone

Title “Slender: The Eight Pages” centers around the ominous figure of Slenderman, a towering, elongated humanoid entity with an affinity for targeting children. Originating from internet folklore and the Creepypasta genre – a type of horror stories born on online forums – this game unfolds in a desolate forest where the player assumes the role of a vulnerable character tasked with finding multiple notebook pages scattered throughout the forest. As players navigate the forest, they must evade detection from Slenderman who is persistently stalking them.

As players gather additional pages, the presence of Slenderman grows stronger and more noticeable. The distance between them can be gauged by an escalating static effect that distorts the player’s vision. It is important to note that in both “Slender: The Eight Pages” and subsequent encounters, Slenderman actively stalks the protagonist at random moments as more pages are found. In “Slender: The Arrival”, a more polished version of “Slender: The Eight Pages”, Slenderman remains the sole enemy encountered.

4 Fears To Fathom

Miles, Lauren, Noah, And Jack All Confront Unsavory Individuals

As a gamer, I’m immersed in the chilling world of “Fears Unveiled,” a horror anthology series inspired by real-life terrors. This thrilling journey is crafted by developer Rayll, who weaves together harrowing tales from Reddit posts and emails into short, suspenseful gaming experiences. Currently, four out of five episodes are accessible, each one focusing on a unique antagonist. In all four episodes, it’s just one formidable foe that relentlessly pursues me: a home invader, a stalker, an ex-lover, and a cult member.

1. In the movie “Home Alone,” 14-year-old Miles is determined to survive a break-in at his home;

5 Monstrum

A Surviving Crewmate Must Escape One Of Three Enemies

In the game Monstrum, players find themselves pitted against one of three foes – the Brute, the Hunter, or the Fiend – aboard a ship known as the Hisa Maru. This game, Monstrum, is structured such that when a player dies, all progress is erased and the game resets from the start. Moreover, these predators are AI-controlled, rendering their actions unpredictable since they don’t follow a predetermined pattern. Each of the three enemies has a unique look, as well as different speed and strength statistics, and special abilities that set them apart.

During each game session, players will face just a single enemy, which is chosen at random from a selection of formidable opponents such as The Brute, The Hunter, and The Fiend. Each of these adversaries exhibits unique characteristics – The Brute is a massive, muscular creature with piercing orange eyes, The Hunter resembles a skeletal humanoid with visible internal organs, while The Fiend exudes an ominous purple aura that marks it as a demonic entity. To ensure their survival, players must scavenge necessary resources to unlock one of the three available escape routes before they are eliminated by the monster.

6 Granny

Granny Torments The Kidnapped Protagonist

In a secluded location, our hero encounters a massive, seemingly abandoned house in the game ‘Granny’. A heavy blow to the head leaves them unconscious. Upon waking, they find themselves trapped inside Granny’s decaying residence. The objective is to search for useful items, solve puzzles, and move forward while evading Granny and other enemies she commands. These adversaries may ambush the player at any moment, but it’s Granny who serves as the central villain and the collective consciousness of all opponents. She relentlessly pursues the player when they come into her vision, lays traps to ensnare them, and rushes towards them whenever an item falls.

In this game, Grandma has control over lesser foes like the Spider Mom, the Spider, and the Crow, who will assault the player if they approach too closely. This gives Grandma enough time to subdue them. If the player clings to her Teddy or eliminates one of her pets, Grandma will become enraged. This rage state persists until the player hides, wins the game, or advances to the next night. Notably, Grandma is the great-grandmother of Slendrina, a character from a different series created by DVloper, the developer behind Granny.
