The Best Pokemon in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Okay, so when I first start a new Pokemon game, I usually stick with my starter and whatever other Pokemon I can find early on. But as I get further into the story in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, I really need to build a strong team. Trust me, having powerful Pokemon makes those Rogue Mega Evolution battles SO much easier. It’s a total game-changer!

Like most recent *Pokemon* games, *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* features powerful Legendary and Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon. However, the game’s emphasis on Mega Evolution introduces a few unexpected strong contenders. This guide will highlight some of the best Pokemon in the game and explain how to add them to your team.

10. Gyarados

Mega Gyarados’ Base Stat Total is 640

While Florges is a bit stronger overall, the original Gyarados from Generation 1 is more powerful because of its Mega Evolution. Mega Gyarados has an incredibly high Attack stat and can use it effectively with strong physical moves like Crunch and Waterfall. Plus, players can find Gyarados relatively early in the game, as its pre-evolution, Magikarp, appears in Wild Zone 2.

How to Get Gyarados in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

You can find Gyarados in the Wild Zone at level 11, and a stronger Alpha Gyarados in the Wild Zone at level 20. Alternatively, you can evolve a Magikarp into Gyarados when it reaches level 20. To Mega Evolve Gyarados, you’ll need a Gyaradosite Orb, which costs 240 Mega Shards at the Quasartico Mega Shard Exchange.

9. Starmie

Mega Starmie’s Base Stat Total is 660

Mega Starmie is a new Mega Evolution that some players find oddly designed, but it’s incredibly powerful in battle. Unlike most Mega Evolutions which get a 100-point stat boost, Mega Starmie gains a massive 140 points. This makes it one of the strongest Water-type Pokémon in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, capable of dealing significant damage with both physical and special moves.

How to Get Starmie in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

You can find Starmie in the Wild Zone at area 16, and a stronger Alpha Starmie in area 20. Alternatively, you can evolve a Staryu into a Starmie using a Water Stone. To Mega Evolve Starmie, you’ll need a Starminite Orb, earned by finishing Main Mission 34.

8. Metagross

Mega Metagross’ Base Stat Total is 700

Metagross is a fan-favorite among powerful Pokémon, known for its high defense and strong attacks. The ability to Mega Evolve makes it even better, giving it useful resistances and an amazing Defense stat of 150. It also has a very high Attack stat, meaning it can hit hard while taking a lot of damage itself.

How to Get Metagross in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

You can find a powerful Alpha Metagross in the Wild Zone 20. Alternatively, you can evolve a Metang into Metagross at level 45. To Mega Evolve Metagross, you’ll need a Metagrossite Orb, which can be purchased from the Quasartico Mega Shard Exchange for 360 Mega Shards after finishing Main Mission 31.

7. Salamence

Mega Salamence’s Base Stat Total is 700

Salamence doesn’t have quite the same staying power as Metagross, but it packs a similar punch. It’s strongest when using physical attacks, though it can also handle special moves reasonably well. Being able to learn Flamethrower is a big advantage, especially since it’s very vulnerable to Ice-type attacks. Plus, its Mega Evolution is quite strong.

How to Get Salamence in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

You can find a powerful Alpha Salamence in the Wild Zone 20. Alternatively, Salamence evolves from Shelgon at level 50. To Mega Evolve Salamence, you’ll need a Salamencite orb, which costs 360 Mega Shards at the Quasartico Mega Shard Exchange after finishing Main Mission 31.

6. Tyranitar

Mega Tyranitar’s Base Stat Total is 700

Tyranitar is vulnerable to many attacks, especially Fighting-type moves which are four times more effective. However, it’s completely unaffected by Psychic-type attacks and boasts incredible offensive power with an Attack stat of 134 – only a couple of Pokémon without Mega Evolutions hit harder. When Tyranitar Mega Evolves, it becomes even more powerful, with a Defense stat of 150, making it a very difficult opponent.

How to Get Tyranitar in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

You can find a special, powerful Tyranitar (called an Alpha Tyranitar) in the Wild Zone 20. You can also evolve a Pupitar into Tyranitar when it reaches level 55. If you want to Mega Evolve your Tyranitar, you’ll need a Tyranitarite Orb, which is earned by finishing Main Mission 33.

5. Dragonite

Mega Dragonite’s Base Stat Total is 700

Dragonite, a classic Pokémon from the first generation, received a Mega Evolution in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A*, and it’s a powerful upgrade. When it Mega Evolves, Dragonite gets a significant increase to its Special Attack and Special Defense, letting it deal massive damage with moves like Blizzard. This makes it a great choice for battling other Mega Evolved Dragon-type Pokémon in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A*.

How to Get Dragonite in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

You can find an Alpha Dragonite in Wild Zone 20. Dragonite can also be evolved from Dragonair once it reaches level 55. To Mega Evolve your Dragonite, you’ll need a Dragoninite Orb, which is earned by finishing Main Mission 32.

4. Garchomp

Mega Garchomp’s Base Stat Total is 700

Okay, so Garchomp is the final Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon you find in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A*, but honestly, it’s a total powerhouse! When it Mega Evolves, its Attack stat is second only to Mega Heracross – that’s seriously strong. But what *really* sets Mega Garchomp apart is that it can also hit hard with Special Attacks. It’s not just a physical attacker like Heracross; it can learn moves like Draco Meteor and Fire Blast, which are super useful for taking down other Dragon-types. It’s a really well-rounded and dangerous Pokémon!

How to Get Garchomp in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

You can find a shiny Alpha Garchomp in the Wild Area’s Zone 20. You can also evolve Gabite into Garchomp at level 48. To Mega Evolve Garchomp, you’ll need a Garchompite, which costs ₽70,000 at the Stone Emporium after you finish Main Mission 10.

3. Xerneas

Xerneas’ Base Stat Total is 680

Okay, so Xerneas is back, and as a gamer who remembers *Pokemon X*, I’m super hyped! It’s got the same awesome 680 base stat total that everyone loved. What’s really cool is that, unlike a lot of the other powerhouses in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, it doesn’t *need* to Mega Evolve to be amazing. It’s just naturally strong, with a whopping 131 in both Attack and Special Attack. Plus, Dragon-types? Forget about it – Xerneas completely shrugs those off, making it a fantastic pick against a lot of the Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon.

How to Get Xerneas in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

After you finish the main story, you’ll unlock Main Mission 40, where you can catch Xerneas.

2. Yveltal

Yveltal’s Base Stat Total is 680

Similar to Xerneas, Yveltal has high Attack and Special Attack stats – 131 in each – giving it a lot of flexibility in battle. It’s completely unaffected by Ground and Psychic attacks and takes reduced damage from Ghost, Grass, and Dark-type moves, which is really useful when battling powerful Alpha Pokémon after completing the main story. Yveltal can deal massive damage with moves like Focus Blast, Hyper Beam, and Hurricane, making it a dangerous opponent.

How to Get Yveltal in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

After you finish the main story, you’ll unlock Main Mission 41, where you can catch Yveltal.

1. Zygarde

Mega Zygarde’s Base Stat Total is 778

Zygarde was expected to be the most powerful Pokémon players could obtain in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A*, but its actual strength is surprising. When it transforms, its stats total 778, significantly higher than any other Pokémon available at the game’s launch. A large portion of this power comes from its incredible Special Attack stat of 216 – the highest ever seen in a Pokémon game, exceeding the previous record held by Mega Mewtwo Y by a substantial 22 points.

How to Get Zygarde in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Okay, so as a Pokémon fan, I was super excited to learn you can actually catch Zygarde in the game! You unlock the chance to find it during Main Mission 42, but you need to finish the main story first. And if you want to Mega Evolve it, you’ll need the Zygardite orb – you get that during Main Mission 37. Definitely a cool reward for playing through the story!
