The Best PS3 RPGs That Get Better As You Play

Summary

  • Some PS3 RPGs, like Alpha Protocol, had rough starts but improved with time and patches.
  • Demon’s Souls changed RPGs forever with its challenging gameplay and rewarding experience.
  • White Knight Chronicles offers giant mech-like knights in MMO-style combat with slow story progression.

Guns of the Patriots. It took some time to see quality RPGs on the PS3’s seventh-generation hardware, though.

Although the PlayStation 3’s library of Role-Playing Games (RPGs) isn’t as extensive as that of the PlayStation 1 or PlayStation 2, there’s still a wealth of enjoyable titles worth exploring, particularly in the RPG category. Similar to the PS3, these RPGs didn’t initially gain much attention but are certainly worthy of recognition. Here are some noteworthy examples from various RPG genres, including action and turn-based games.

Alpha Protocol

A Forgotten Spy RPG

New Vegas, although it was marred by bugs at its initial release. On the other hand, Alpha Protocol – a standalone title that has been removed from many digital stores – often gets overlooked, which is unfortunate as it also had a bumpy start but became smoother with updates.

The truth is, this spy RPG got off to a somewhat sluggish beginning. It doesn’t seem to find its rhythm until a few missions have been completed. It aspires to be like Deus Ex and eventually achieves that, but early on, Alpha Protocol can try the patience of players.

Demon’s Souls

Prepare To Die

Demon’s Souls revolutionized Role-Playing Games (RPGs) as FromSoftware’s inaugural Souls game, which the company likely believed to be a unique, standalone title. However, the persistence of players revealed a rich action RPG that surpassed anything preceding it in depth.

It’s not hard to see why numerous players abandon Demon’s Souls after only a few hours. The game can seem frustratingly unproductive when experience points are repeatedly lost. However, those willing to tackle the steep learning curve stand to reap significant rewards.

Dragon’s Dogma

Medieval Monster Hunter

Dragon’s Dogma can be seen as Capcom’s foray into a game style similar to the Souls series, blended with elements from their Monster Hunter franchise. Players have the ability to design their own character and an ally, known as a Pawn, embarking on a grand adventure filled with encounters against massive beasts such as cyclops or creatures resembling Medusa.

Mastering any sense of accomplishment in Dragon’s Dogma can be quite challenging due to its intricate controls and gameplay elements, but given time, these complexities eventually become instinctive. It may even appear that the mechanics of Demon’s Souls are simple by comparison, yet both games have earned loyal followings among those who persevered with them.

Final Fantasy 13

It Gets Good Forty Hours In

In a notable shift for the series, Final Fantasy 13 offered a more structured gameplay experience, eschewing traditional exploration in favor of a heavily guided journey. Unlike previous installments, the players had no option to select their teammates, as they entered and exited the story at various points. The narrative itself was fragmented and did not follow a linear progression.

It takes approximately forty hours to complete most of the game, and an open-world-like segment becomes available in the last third. Some players felt this came too late, but many fans of Final Fantasy series found they enjoyed the game more after this point. Despite its linear parts, Final Fantasy 13 is generally well-regarded, although it may take a while to get accustomed to.

NieR

A Long Road To Fun

As I dive headfirst into the world of NIER, I can’t help but feel a pang of melancholy, as if I’ve joined the hero’s journey at its twilight. My nameless character speaks sparingly, and there seems to be more aimless wandering than thrilling action. Yet, when the action does unfold, it doesn’t quite hit the mark for what one might expect from an RPG experience.

In due course, participants will discover a book titled Grimoire, which unveils magical elements and enriches both narrative and game mechanics. As two additional characters join in, the party becomes complete, making the experience in NieR feel like the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch

Stop Crying And Catch Pokemon

In the realm of PlayStation 3 RPGs, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch stands tall, offering formidable competition to the esteemed Pokemon series in the genre of monster-catching games. Nevertheless, the adventure embarked by Oliver is tinged with frustration, as he grapples with a lack of self-assuredness and is deeply saddened by his mother’s absence.

After Oliver ventures into a new realm where conflict ensues, players won’t find many ways to contribute significantly to the combat system initially. However, once you’ve gathered all three of your companions (which can take approximately 20 hours), the combat will become more intuitive and engaging.

Resonance Of Fate

A Steep Learning Curve

In Resonance of Fate, you won’t have to wait for your party members to join – they’ll already be available at the game’s outset. This is certainly advantageous, but unfortunately, the complexity of the combat system proves to be a challenge, as it seems unnecessarily intricate.

In Resonance of Fate, it’s crucial for players to pay attention to both the field of vision and movement of their characters during battles, lending a strategic depth to gameplay. Mastering moves that resemble choreographed action sequences from anime makes the game truly exciting. However, don’t expect the game to guide you through every step – it offers a challenge and requires players to find their own way to victory.

White Knight Chronicles

Get To The Mecha Knight Already

As a gamer, I’d say that diving into the realm of White Knight Chronicles, I found it somewhat conventional in its design elements, with a player character who remains silent and a narrative that seems to have been lifted straight from an RPG manual. The game begins at a leisurely pace, gradually unfolding to reveal engaging combat sequences and open-ended quests.

White Knight Chronicles offers an experience primarily centered on its engaging gameplay, which resembles Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOs). The game’s main attraction lies in the ability to summon a colossal knight-like mech for combat against larger enemies. Once this feature is introduced, the game becomes significantly more enjoyable.
