As a huge fan, I think The Last of Us is easily one of the best games we’ve seen in the last 15 years, if not the best. Naughty Dog really nailed it back in 2013 with Joel and Ellie, creating what I consider the ultimate found family relationship in gaming. Honestly, games like The Last of Us just don’t come around often, and that’s probably why Sony felt it was worth remaking for both the PS4 and PS5. It’s not just the perfect mix of action and horror, either – the story and characters have to be incredible too, and very few games reach that level.
Eventually, you can only play The Last of Us so many times before wanting something new. If you’re looking for a completely different experience, games like Ghost of Yotei or Crimson Desert would be a good choice. But if you still want something similar to The Last of Us, these are the games you should check out first.

6. God Of War Ragnarok
Father And Son Bonding Through Norse Mythology
Many PlayStation 5 owners will recognize God of War Ragnarök as one of the console’s biggest hits. The game continues the story of Kratos, the God of War, picking up where God of War (2018) left off. Players will again guide Kratos as he battles Norse gods and tries to raise his son. While the relationship between Kratos and his son, Atreus, is still important, this sequel spends more time with them apart. Despite a sometimes complicated plot, Ragnarök is an epic, thrilling, and surprisingly humorous experience.
Although God of War focuses more on action combat than The Last of Us, it shares a similar emotional core centered around family. Like Ellie and Joel, Kratos and his son Atreus develop a close relationship, but their bond is challenged as Atreus seeks independence. This forces Kratos to accept that he can’t always control his son’s path.
If you’re new to the series, we recommend playing the 2018 game first. It feels more like the original The Last of Us than Ragnarok. We chose to feature the sequel here because it was specifically made for the PS5.
5. Days Gone Remastered
Another Story-Driven Zombie Epic Crafted For PlayStation
When it first came out, Days Gone received a lot of mixed reviews. It was released at a time when people were getting tired of zombie games, and it had a hard time standing out compared to popular PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us. However, looking back now, in 2026, Days Gone seems better than many remember, especially with a remastered version that fixes some of the original PS4 game’s technical problems.
While the gameplay structure of this game is quite different from The Last of Us, it shares some key similarities. Both games feature a journey across a dangerous landscape, but you experience this road trip more directly in this title. Storytelling is central to both experiences; this game follows Deacon, a biker searching for his wife, and while its narrative doesn’t quite reach the emotional impact of Joel and Ellie’s story, it’s particularly strong in its second act. Finally, both games are set in post-apocalyptic North America, overrun by infected creatures.
4. Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition
Claustrophobic, Apocalyptic Horror
Compared to The Last of Us, Metro Exodus is a very different game, both in terms of its world and how you play. It’s a first-person shooter set in a ruined Russia where you have to struggle to survive. Unlike earlier games in the Metro series, Exodus lets you explore several smaller, open areas and search for supplies.
Though it’s not a traditional zombie apocalypse, Metro Exodus features many dangerous, non-human enemies. Set after a nuclear war, the game focuses on the struggle to survive and find supplies in a ruined world. This makes it feel similar to The Last of Us, but it offers its own distinct and engaging experience.
3. A Plague Tale: Innocence (& Requiem)

The A Plague Tale games are fantastic adventures set in a chaotic, plague-ridden France. The first game, A Plague Tale: Innocence, puts you in the role of Amicia, who is trying to protect her brother Hugo after they are forced to escape the Inquisition. You’ll navigate a world falling apart using a combination of straightforward combat and clever stealth tactics.
The relationship between Amicia and Hugo is portrayed wonderfully, though Hugo’s voice can occasionally be annoying. The game is enjoyable to play, but its story is what truly makes it special. While A Plague Tale: Requiem might be the stronger game overall, you really need to play Innocence first to fully appreciate the sequel.

2. Alan Wake 2
Become The Champion Of Light
Unlike the other games mentioned, Alan Wake 2 isn’t set during the end of the world. You play as the writer Alan Wake, trying to escape a shadowy alternate reality. You do this by writing a story about an FBI agent investigating a case, using a flashlight and gun to survive. This sequel is more focused on the tension and difficulty of a survival-horror game, requiring players to carefully manage their resources.
Although the story of Alan Wake 2 is quite different from The Last of Us, the way you play – a survival-action-horror experience – feels similar. Like The Last of Us Part II, it features two characters you can control, each with their own story. Alan Wake 2 is a brilliantly crafted horror-mystery and a great game whether you’re a fan of The Last of Us or not.
1. Resident Evil 4 (2023)
Where’s Everyone Going, Bingo?
Man, Resident Evil 4 is just another incredible survival horror game. Seriously, it’s the king of those over-the-top, cheesy zombie games! You play it like a third-person shooter, always scrambling for ammo and trying to sneak past enemies when you’re running low. It kinda reminds me of The Last of Us in that way, but Resident Evil 4 really leans into the action and spectacle. It’s just a blast!
Similar to how Joel safeguards Ellie in The Last of Us, Leon is tasked with protecting Ashley from dangerous villagers and terrifying creatures in the Spanish countryside. Though some The Last of Us fans might find it a bit silly, Resident Evil helped create the action-horror genre, and this remake successfully updates the original game while staying true to its core spirit.
Resident Evil Requiem is also a good option, and it has better scares than RE4R
