The Best RPG Couples Of All Time

Romance is a common element in role-playing games (RPGs). What began as simple interactions have evolved into complex relationships between characters, mirroring the growth of the games themselves over the past four decades. Since the revival of video games with the NES in 1985, RPGs have consistently featured romantic storylines.

With so many video game couples, which two have the most compelling relationships? We’ll be looking at how long their romances last throughout the games, and how deeply they care for each other. Do they just have a quick connection, or are they willing to do anything for each other?

There will be spoilers.

Valvatorez & Artina

From Blood To Sardines

Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten centers around Valvatorez, a vampire who made a vow to abstain from drinking blood. Years ago, he promised a girl named Artina he would eat sardines instead, hoping to demonstrate his goodness. Sadly, Artina passed away before he could fulfill that promise.

He followed through on his commitment and kept eating sardines. During the game, he encountered a selfish angel named Vulcanus who strongly resembled Artina. It was, in fact, her all along, and they made amends, fulfilling the game’s central theme: a promise once made is never truly broken.

Gustave & Sophie

Kiss From A Rose

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 begins with a shocking and emotional moment, quickly followed by the start of a sweet love story. Players take on the role of Gustave, who is preparing to bid farewell to those who will tragically die during the Gomage – a yearly festival with the magical, yet deadly, effect of killing everyone who reaches a certain age.

One character is named Sophie, and she has a history with another character in the game. They reconcile during a festival, and players will quickly learn the details of their shared past and the depth of their connection – but only for a short time, as Sophie tragically transforms into rose petals soon after. This makes the opening moments of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 particularly impactful.

Ruaidhrigh & Antea

Love Never Dies

In Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, you initially play as Antea, a spirit hunter who assists ghosts with their unresolved issues. Sadly, Antea dies early in the game, and you then take control of her partner, Ruaidhrigh, as he continues their work.

Despite their deep love, Antea is now bound to Ruaidhrigh as a ghost, which, while seemingly romantic, creates difficulties in their relationship. Throughout their journey, they experience a range of emotions like sadness, guilt, and anger, but their love for each other ultimately endures.

Bayek & Aya

Our Son WILL Be Avenged

Assassin’s Creed Origins is the earliest game in the Assassin’s Creed timeline, establishing the origins of the Brotherhood, known as the Hidden Ones within the game. The story follows Bayek, whose son, Khemu, is tragically killed. Driven by revenge and a desire for answers, Bayek teams up with his wife, Aya, to fight against a secretive, masked group.

Honestly, watching Bayek and Aya, I was struck by how completely united they were in their quest for revenge, even when they were physically separated for most of the game. It broke my heart when they parted ways at the end, after everything they’d been through, but it made sense. They both realized that their commitment to the Brotherhood was bigger than their personal feelings. Bayek staying in Egypt and Aya going to Rome was a tough pill to swallow, but it felt like a necessary sacrifice. It was a sad romance, for sure, but ultimately, I understood why they made that choice.

Undyne & Alphys

A Warrior And A Scientist Walk Into A Bar…

Undertale is a role-playing game that doesn’t take very long to complete, but it develops its characters surprisingly well – even better than some much longer RPGs. One of the bosses you’ll encounter is Undyne, and Alphys, a scientist who resembles Lisa Simpson, works alongside her in the kingdom.

It’s obvious these two characters have feelings for each other, but they’re both too shy to say it directly. This has led fans to create their own ideas about their relationship. Though they don’t show a lot of affection in Undertale, the hints in their conversations are sweet and charming.

Zidane & Garnet

A Classic Romance

Zidane and Garnet are the main characters in Final Fantasy 9. Zidane, a charming thief, is tasked with kidnapping Princess Garnet of Alexandria, but she secretly wants to be taken away. Their connection works because Zidane playfully flirts with Garnet without being overly aggressive or pushy.

Their relationship helps both of them grow. He shows her life beyond royal duties, and she allows him to open up emotionally. It’s a heartwarming love story, typical of the adventurous and romance-focused gameplay found in the Final Fantasy series.

Commander Shepard & Liara

The Preferred Romance By Fox News

One of the things that makes Mass Effect special is the ability to create a character of any gender. Players also get to choose who their character romances, and Liara is by far the most popular choice with fans, regardless of whether their Commander Shepard is male or female.

Liara, an Asari, has traditionally feminine characteristics, which adds a layer of understanding – and a slight taboo – to her attraction to a female Commander Shepard. Interestingly, their intimate scene caused a stir on Fox News back in 2008, though that reaction seems pretty comical today. Regardless of the media attention, Liara is consistently considered one of the best romance options in the Mass Effect series.

Geralt & Yennefer

Three Games To Find Her

The Witcher games center around Geralt’s search for Yennefer, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt finally introduces players to her. The game delves into Yennefer’s history and features memorable moments, including a now-famous scene of her taking a bath.

Although some players first connected with Triss in the second game, it was always evident that Geralt’s heart belonged to Yennifer. They function as a family with their adopted daughter, Ciri, and despite their flaws, they are incredibly devoted to each other and to her.

Sora & Kairi

Hearts Forever Broken

The story of Kingdom Hearts centers around Sora and Kairi’s constant separation and their desire to be together. The first game sees Sora losing his friend Riku to the darkness and Kairi being taken away. Though Sora eventually saves Kairi, he must make a heartbreaking sacrifice – giving up his own heart to become a Heartless – before regaining his body and saying a tearful farewell as Kairi returns home.

Their connection is incredibly complex and hard to explain – it’s as intricate as the entire Kingdom Hearts story. But at its heart, this budding romance is really what the series is all about.

Noah & Mio

Willing To Go Evil

In Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Noah and Mio initially begin as enemies due to their opposing nations. However, when they discover a larger, more sinister plot, they join forces and can transform into powerful, mech-like beings called Ouroboros. As Noah and Mio’s bond strengthens, they become the fastest at transforming, and the game also features a compelling element of time distortion.

Noah was so devastated by the thought of losing Mio that he turned to villainy, with Mio fighting by his side. Similar to Kingdom Hearts, the story of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is complex, but at its heart, it’s a beautiful story about Noah and Mio’s unwavering commitment to each other – a true example of a perfect romance.
