So, I’m getting ready to jump into *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, and the first thing I have to do is pick my starter! It’s cool they’re bringing back that classic choice, and this time around we get three options: Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile. Gotta decide which one I’m gonna start my adventure with!
Each of the starting Pokémon in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* has its own advantages and disadvantages, so picking the best one can seem tricky at the beginning. However, one Pokémon stands out as particularly strong during the early parts of the game.
Which Starter Should You Choose in Pokemon Legends: Z-A? (Best Starter)

Like most Pokémon games, the starting Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A are fairly evenly matched. However, Feraligatr, the final evolution of Totodile, is arguably the strongest. It has the highest overall stats and reaches its final form at a lower level – level 30 – compared to the evolutions of Chikorita (level 32) and Tepig (level 36). Because of this, many players will probably find Totodile to be the best choice for a starter Pokémon in the game, though other factors can also play a role.

- Chikorita -> Bayleef (level 16) -> Meganium (level 32)
Chikorita often seems like the weakest of the three starter Pokemon in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, having the lowest stats and a special ability, Leaf Guard, that only works in strong sunlight. However, some players might prefer the evolved Mega Meganium over the other final evolutions, and since *Z-A* doesn’t have any powerful Mythical or Legendary Grass-type Pokemon, Chikorita could be a solid choice for building a truly competitive end-game team.

- Tepig -> Pignite (level 17) -> Emboar (level 36)
While the Tepig line isn’t particularly popular with longtime fans, it’s unique for giving you a Pokémon with two types – Fire and Fighting. Pignite and Emboar’s dual typing can be helpful if you’re building a team that covers a lot of weaknesses. However, this advantage becomes less important later in the game. Pokémon like Meganium and Feraligatr gain secondary types when they Mega Evolve, and Charizard is another strong option. This means Emboar might not be as necessary once you’ve progressed further.

- Totodile -> Croconaw (level 18) -> Feraligatr (level 30)
Feraligatr is the strongest of the second-stage starter Pokémon, and you can get it slightly earlier in the game since Croconaw evolves at level 30. Its abilities, Sheer Force and Torrent, both increase its attack power, though Torrent only activates when its health is low. The main reasons to choose a different starter would be if you intend to use Blastoise or Greninja later, or if you simply don’t like Mega Feraligatr’s appearance – some people think it resembles a toilet seat on its back.
