The Best Turn-Based Strategy Games For 2026

Introduction

2026 looks like a fantastic year for Turn-Based Strategy games! There are several promising titles on the horizon, and early indications suggest they’ll all be excellent. I’ve personally played most of the games on my list, so my rankings are based on hands-on experience, not just pre-release buzz. Though, I’m especially excited about the top pick – I have a feeling it’s going to be amazing!

7 – Stormbinders

Stormbinders initially appears similar to Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, but it’s actually a brand new franchise inspired by that classic series, and it’s shaping up nicely. Based on developer updates, screenshots, and the innovative ‘storm binding’ system – which dynamically affects both the world map and battles (like fire storms enhancing fire magic, water storms slowing units, and spirit storms draining mana) – the game will require players to constantly adjust their strategies. Stormbinders could genuinely impress Heroes of Might & Magic fans and offer a strong alternative if Olden Era doesn’t quite deliver.

6 – Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2

Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2 builds directly on the first game, maintaining the same core gameplay where your heroes rely on servitors and Necron units to complete missions. This time, though, the game offers a complete campaign for both the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Necrons, letting you play as either faction. If you’re interested in a dark, futuristic setting, you can now experience the game from the Necrons’ perspective. Each faction feels unique, and the game is visually stunning. You can find my initial thoughts here, and it’s definitely a turn-based strategy game to watch for in 2026.

5 – Mars Tactics

Mars Tactics has been in development for a long time, and the final game needs to be significantly improved from the demos shown at Steam Next Fest. I’m hoping it will become one of the top five turn-based strategy games worth adding to your wishlist for 2026. It’s a strategy game similar to XCOM and Xenonauts, where you command one of two factions battling for control of Mars. While the core gameplay is familiar to fans of the genre, Mars Tactics adds a unique twist: a fully destructible environment. Buildings can be demolished, cover can be destroyed, and the landscape can be transformed into a cratered battlefield, offering new tactical opportunities and cover for your units.
