20 – Blitzkrieg 2 Anthology

Let’s dive into a game from the early 2000s that doesn’t get much attention nowadays – Blitzkrieg 2 Anthology 2! This game continues the legacy of its 2003 predecessor, offering a realistic tactics experience spanning different battlefields during World War 2. Although its graphics might seem old-fashioned compared to today’s standards, it aimed to bring historical accuracy and strategic depth to a genre often dominated by massive armies. The Blitzkrieg 2 game includes features like reinforcements, supply management, and tank and defensive position armor values, all designed to add complexity to the battlefield strategy. Command historically accurate units in beautifully crafted environments (if you’re fond of the early 2000s visual style seen in games such as Commandos and Age of Empires 2, you’ll appreciate this one). The anthology comes with the base game, along with the Blitzkrieg 2: Fall of the Reich and Blitzkrieg 2: Liberation DLC expansions.

19 – Sudden Strike 4

On a recent gaming spree, I’ve found myself immersed in Sudden Strike 4 – a modern take on real-time tactics set during World War II. Unlike its predecessors, this game leans more towards arcade-style action rather than historical accuracy and gritty battles. As the fourth installment of the series, it represents a significant leap forward from Sudden Strike 3, which was released back in 2007.

Although it may not deliver the same level of immersion as some other games when it comes to authentic battles, Sudden Strike 4 makes up for it with an abundance of content and its frequent affordable pricing. There’s a wide array of missions ranging from the early war days to the Pacific, Winter War, Dunkirk, North Africa, France, and Russia. Visually, it’s quite pleasing as well.

In my opinion, Sudden Strike 4 serves as an excellent choice for a laid-back Friday night gaming session.

18 – Commandos 2

One of my cherished childhood games, which I believe could inspire elements in Commandos: Origins, is none other than the exceptional tactical stealth-based game, Commandos 2. Regarded as one of the best in its genre and undoubtedly the finest set during World War 2, this game allows players to command a squad of elite and iconic commandos, each with unique abilities. The primary focus is on infiltration, sabotage, and covert operations behind enemy lines, requiring careful planning, study of patrol routes and maps, and precision in execution. Every commando’s ability becomes second nature for those who spent countless hours playing it. If you’re keen to explore the game that kick-started the series, the original Commandos is a worthy choice.

17 – War Mongrels

War Mongrels bears a strong resemblance to Commandos as they are both real-time tactics games, but with War Mongrels, there’s a compelling narrative attached. It takes place on the Eastern Front during World War 2, where you lead a band of deserters who transform into resistance fighters. A mix of stealth, tactical combat, and a campaign driven by storytelling that doesn’t gloss over the harsh realities of war, players are tasked with outsmarting and defeating German forces while confronting the horrors of the conflict that significantly shaped the 20th century. The initial mission is quite impactful, although the game controls could be more refined, it’s still a journey worth embarking on.

16 – Men of War 2

Although Men of War 2 may not initially seem like an obvious pick due to mixed reviews, even for Firaxis standards, I believe its single-player missions are worth experiencing. Since its release almost a year ago, the game has undergone numerous updates, enhancing various aspects such as systems, mechanics, units, battalions, maps, graphics, and sounds. Essentially, it’s still a classic Men of War experience where you oversee small groups of infantry, tanks, and artillery, requiring strategic control and decision-making. Given these updates and its current state, I recommend considering giving the game a try.
