The Biggest Anime Of 2026 (April 2026)

The anime schedule for 2026 is becoming clearer, with many highly anticipated shows announced for each season. Popular titles like Frieren, Black Clover, Jujutsu Kaisen, Bleach, and JoJo are all expected, though some have already aired! Spring 2026 is underway, and we’re seeing a mix of new sequels and fresh series that could become major hits and dominate online conversations. It’s too soon to say which anime will be the biggest in 2026, but several strong contenders have emerged, assuming they stay on schedule and deliver high-quality seasons.

With the incredible success of Solo Leveling Season 2 in 2025, 2026 needs a new anime to generate similar excitement. Here are a few upcoming 2026 anime expected to be major hits, as well as some promising series that haven’t announced their release dates yet.

We’re highlighting the most anticipated upcoming anime, rather than trying to pick the ‘best’ – it’s too early to say which those will be. We’ve also included a couple of shows currently slated for 2026, though those dates aren’t final.

We didn’t include One Piece because it’s almost certain to be one of the most popular anime in 2026 anyway. This list focuses on new series and continuations that are likely to premiere next year.

Demon Slayer has been left out since the sequel movies are unknown quantities at this point.

Winter 2026

Frieren: Beyond The Journey’s End Season 2

One Of The Best Anime Ever Returns In Early 2026

Beginning in 2026 with a strong start, Frieren: Beyond The Journey’s End continued to impress with its beautiful mix of peaceful fantasy, detailed world-building, and exciting action sequences. The first season was exceptionally well-received, widely considered Madhouse’s best anime in years and a standout series overall.

Frieren remains consistently excellent, and each new story arc actually feels stronger than the last. The second season delivers the same beautiful animation, lovable characters, and clever world-building we’ve come to expect, while also raising the stakes with more challenging enemies and exciting battles.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3

Could The 2026 JJK Season Be The Best Yet?

Jujutsu Kaisen is easily one of the most popular anime series of the 2020s. Along with Demon Slayer, it raised the bar for action anime, and every season and story arc has been consistently high quality. While the second season focused heavily on battles and didn’t move the overall story or character development forward as much as some fans hoped, it was still visually stunning and exciting.

The third season, with twelve episodes, adapts the first part of ‘The Culling Game’ storyline, which sets the stage for the series’ climax. Compared to the previous season, this Winter 2026 installment from JK successfully balanced exciting action with meaningful story development, and it also featured some compelling new characters.

Hell’s Paradise Season 2

A Gory Supernatural Shonen Returns For, Hopefully, Its Breakout Season

While not a bad show, Hell’s Paradise didn’t quite live up to the high expectations. It introduced a great cast of characters and an interesting world, but the plot felt predictable, and the action sequences weren’t as impressive as those in series like Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer.

I noticed the manga really found its footing after a bit of a slow start – most people agree the second half is much stronger than the first. The anime followed a similar pattern, and the sequel was a significant improvement over what came before. Even if the upcoming Winter 2026 season by MAPPA was just as good as the first anime, it would still be a solid action show, but thankfully, the sequel actually surpasses it.

Fate/strange Fake

The Wait Is Over, The New Fate Anime Is Finally Here

New anime in the Fate series always generate excitement, and the upcoming Winter 2026 release from A-1 Pictures had been building anticipation for over a year and a half. A prequel, Fate/strange Fake: Whispers of Dawn, arrived in July 2023. Then, the first episode of Fate/strange Fake was released in November 2024, but after that, there was a long wait of about a year. Finally, the anime premiered as part of the Winter 2026 simulcast, giving fans a chance to watch one of the more unique stories in the Fate franchise.

As the title suggests, Fate/strange Fake centers around a fake Holy Grail War, started by a group in America. Unlike previous stories in the Fate series, this one appears to take place mostly in the United States. A unique twist is the relationship between the main characters: Ayaka takes on the role of the master, while The Lionheart is the Saber-class servant.

So far, Fate/strange Fake has lived up to the high standards of the Fate series, both in terms of its animation and story. However, it’s probably best to watch this after you’re already familiar with the Fate universe, as it doesn’t explain everything from the beginning.

Sentenced To Be A Hero

The Best New Anime Of Winter 2026

This list is heavily influenced by returning shows, as sequels naturally generate more buzz than new series. It takes a season for new shows to prove themselves, though adaptations can sometimes create initial excitement. Sentenced to Be a Hero was the most anticipated new anime of Winter 2026, thanks to both its original source material and a compelling story. The show delivered on that promise, with particularly impressive animation. Even in a season alongside popular titles like Fate, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Frieren, Sentenced to Be a Hero arguably had the best animation, especially during action scenes.

Great visuals are useless without a good story, and thankfully, this show delivers on both fronts. While the writing in Sentenced to Be a Hero isn’t groundbreaking, it’s consistently solid. The story takes place in a fantasy world where humanity is almost wiped out by powerful demons. To fight back, prisoners are forced to become endless “heroes” – fighting a never-ending war. Even when they die, they’re brought back to life, but each revival slowly erases their memories and sense of self. The main character, Xylo, is one of these heroes, and he discovers a goddess named Teoritta, who is actually a powerful weapon created to help them fight the demons.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run (March 2026)

The Return Of A Shonen Legend And The Debut Of A Beloved Saga

I’m so excited! Netflix just announced that Steel Ball Run is finally coming in 2026! The first episode drops on March 19th, and it’s going to be amazing – it’s a fantastic way to jump into what many fans consider the best part of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series. We’ll meet all the key characters and get a feel for the cool, Western-inspired world. They haven’t said when the second part will be released yet, but they’ve promised it’s also coming sometime in 2026!

Spring 2026

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4

One Of The Best Isekai Anime Enters One Of Its Best Arcs

Regardless of your opinion on Re:Zero, it’s hard to deny how ambitious the series is. Each season feels distinct, making it arguably the most unpredictable and varied isekai anime ever created. While the anime – and its main character, Subaru – can be polarizing, the fourth season is poised to be a major highlight of Spring 2026, especially considering the strong competition. The series already has a dedicated fanbase from both the original source material and the anime adaptation, and season 4 will adapt what many consider to be one of its best story arcs. If executed well, the 2026 anime could be the best installment yet.

Witch Hat Atelier

The Golden Age Of Fantasy Anime Continues With A New Top Contender

I think 2026 is shaping up to be an incredible year for fantasy anime. Just Frieren alone could make it one of the best ever, but I’m really excited about Witch Hat Atelier too. The manga by Kamome Shirahama is truly excellent – I’d recommend it to anyone who loves gorgeous artwork, well-developed characters, and a story with real stakes. Basically, the story is set in a world where magic exists and witches are known, but they mostly keep to themselves. It follows a girl named Coco who’s fascinated by magic, and after a couple of near-disasters, she becomes the apprentice to a very powerful witch. It’s a journey that’s both wonderful and genuinely scary.

Bug Film is adapting the series, and their previous show was the anime Zom 100. While Zom 100 had a difficult production process, it ultimately managed to pull through. The series even began with a highly praised first episode, and we’re hoping Bug Film can achieve the same level of success with Witch Hat Atelier.
