As a long-time fan of the gaming world, I must say that the demise of Concord leaves me both saddened and bewildered. The swift shutdown of this first-party live-service game is an unprecedented event that has left many of us in shock, especially considering its developers’ apparent eight-year labor of love.
The video game “Concord” faced an unforeseen closure for Sony PlayStation, marking a unique and unfortunate event in the history of first-party live-service games. Within mere days of its release, it was shut down – a move that’s never been seen before. Although some might suggest that warning signs were evident with the initial reveal trailer, this doesn’t diminish the sorrow felt by the dedicated team who worked tirelessly on the project for approximately eight years.
Critics found Concord lacking in originality when it came to character design, gameplay, and visual aesthetics, but this doesn’t diminish the fact that the creators put a lot of heart into the project. This dedication resulted in some gems hidden among the flaws within Concord, and the Galactic Guide was undoubtedly one of these jewels, offering a wealth of captivating, detailed backstory that breathed life into the universe of Concord. Sadly, like the rest of the game, the Galactic Guide has sunk, and its fate seems to be sealed in disappointment.
Concord’s Galactic Guide Has Left a Tragic Legacy
Concord’s Galactic Guide Was Packed With Interesting Lore Tidbits
In the Concord game’s main menu, you can access the Galactic Guide which displays an overhead view of the Concord galaxy. By moving your cursor around freely, you can explore the galaxy, highlighting various planets, space lanes, and significant points of interest. Each planet in the Galactic Guide comes with a detailed description providing essential information about its history, background, and role within the galaxy’s economy. As players progress on each planet, they gradually unlock more details about the planet’s history in the Galactic Guide. Similarly, the Freegunners, the playable characters, are located near their home planets on the map.
Initially, the Concord Galactic Guide might seem daunting, but it’s brimming with genuinely intriguing lore snippets. For instance, you could learn about the Tempest disaster, an unexpected space storm that tore the galaxy apart decades ago, or the crew of the Implacable, the first Freegunner ship that forged a mighty path, or the oppressive Guild, a merchant organization that dominates the galaxy through force and manipulation.
Over time, the pieces of Concord’s narrative would coalesce into a complete picture, and it turned out to be a surprisingly thrilling tale. For enthusiasts of Sci-Fi series with Wild West influences, like Firefly, the struggle between Concord’s Freegunners and The Guild seemed familiar yet refreshing. Additionally, there were numerous thought-provoking tidbits for aficionados of Hard Sci-Fi, such as Dune and Star Trek, including Silo – a planet that The Guild hurled an asteroid into before constructing a Spire stretching from the planet’s surface to space. This imposing structure served as a foreboding symbol of their dominance throughout the galaxy.
Concord’s Galactic Guide Is Probably Gone Forever
It’s apparent that considerable thought and hard work were put into developing the lore for Concord, yet due to a large portion of it being tucked away in the Galactic Guide, many players might have overlooked it entirely. Unfortunately, since the servers for Concord are no longer operational, there’s no way to access the Galactic Guide anymore. In theory, the Galactic Guide could reappear if Concord makes a comeback, but considering the game’s poor reputation and the risks associated with another failed launch, it seems unlikely that this will happen any time soon.
