As a long-time devotee of the Dark Souls franchise, I’ve traversed the treacherous landscapes and faced the unrelenting foes that have made these games legendary. Having played Dark Souls 3 at its release back in 2016, I can attest to its timeless appeal and the undeniable sense of satisfaction it provides when overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds.
Discussing the possibility of remaking the popular action role-playing game Dark Souls 3, whose haunting atmosphere and captivating gameplay have won over countless fans, raises an interesting question. With one of its predecessors, Demon’s Souls, having received a remake, some wonder if it is time for Dark Souls 3 to receive the same treatment. While such a move could certainly improve the game, there are also valid arguments suggesting that no changes may be necessary.
On March 24th, 2016, the public received the well-liked game “Dark Souls 3”, which is part of the popular “Dark Souls” series. Since then, more than eight years have passed, and there’s a chance that FromSoftware might redevelop this specific title. Among all the games in the “Dark Souls” series, “Dark Souls 3” seems to have aged gracefully and retained its timeless appeal compared to its predecessors, making it a strong contender for a remake. Yet, these very qualities could also argue against any further enhancements.
The Case for Dark Souls 3 Being Remade Like Demon’s Souls
The remaking of Demon’s Souls opened up possibilities for the entire Dark Souls franchise, hinting that any game in the series could potentially receive a similar makeover at some point. Although FromSoftware hasn’t taken this step yet, it doesn’t rule out the possibility. If they were to select one game from the Souls series for remaking, Dark Souls 3 would likely be their choice. Refreshing an already exceptional game could rekindle its popularity while also drawing in new admirers. There are several reasons why it’s a strong candidate for a remake:
- The limited amount of Dark Souls 3 New Game Plus content when compared to Dark Souls 2 means that a remake can add more to ensure there are even more challenges to enjoy and overcome
- Being on the easier side when compared to its predecessors, a remake could add a new tier of difficulty with features like making dodge rolls have fewer invincibility frames or changing the damage output of certain enemies
- The remake could add new tools and weapon types for players, bring back some from the previous games, or change the effects and stats of the current options
Why Dark Souls 3 Should Not Be Remade
A potential remake of Dark Souls 3, though likely boasting enhanced graphics like what Demon’s Souls received, might not necessitate an overhaul solely based on visuals. Compared to contemporary games, the world and character design of the third game in the Dark Souls series remains strong. As one of FromSoftware’s finest works in terms of narrative, combat, boss battles, etc., it still stands as a high-quality game that can compete with or surpass modern Soulslike titles. However, remaking Dark Souls 3 could potentially improve it further, but there’s also the risk that any changes made might diminish its quality, leaving an undesirable mark on the third installment of the series.
Each Dark Souls game stands out due to their blend of engaging gameplay and appropriate difficulty; Dark Souls 3 serves as an excellent representation of a game that offers challenging yet fair play. Despite being eight years old, players continue to value it highly, making it a strong candidate for a remake similar to Demon’s Souls. However, whether or not it gets remade is entirely up to FromSoftware. Given its status as a masterpiece, one could argue that there might be no need to enhance it further.
