Summary
- PS1 introduced key Resident Evil titles, including core games like Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3.
- PS2 featured games like Resident Evil: Dead Aim and Survivor 2, enhancing the franchise’s presence.
- PS4 doubled the franchise’s output with titles like Resident Evil 7, Village, and remakes of RE2, RE3, and RE4.
The classic horror game, Resident Evil, was first introduced to gamers in 1996 on the PlayStation 1, later expanding to various other platforms. Originating as a vision from Capcom, it has since evolved into an enduring terror in the realm of horror gaming, with the ninth main installment due for release in 2026, leaving fans thrilled with anticipation.
On the PlayStation 1, there were four significant Resident Evil games. This makes one wonder if this console holds a crucial place in the series’ history. For our count, we consider original titles or substantial ports/remakes. Consequently, newer consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, which both support backward compatibility, would rank higher due to their more recent release dates. Nevertheless, let’s proceed with our tally.

Welcome To The Midwest
- Resident Evil
- Resident Evil 2
- Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
- Resident Evil Survivor
The PS1 marked the beginning of many groundbreaking releases, and it’s well-known for having some of the most original game launches. Key titles in this series include “Resident Evil,” “RE2,” “RE3: Nemesis,” and “RE Survivor.” Notably, the last one, RE Survivor, deviated slightly from the usual formula.
“Resident Evil” is set within the Spencer Mansion, where a band of police survivors find themselves surrounded by hordes of undead creatures. This is where iconic characters like Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Rebecca Chambers, Barry Burton, and Albert Wesker were first introduced as playable characters, along with crucial supporting cast members.
Despite Chris and Jill’s tireless attempts to halt it, the zombie epidemic infiltrated their neighboring town, Raccoon City – a setting familiar from games like RE2 and RE3: Nemesis. In RE2, Chris’s sister Claire and novice police officer Leon S. Kennedy are the playable characters. Although it happens concurrently, neither Jill nor the other two share any interaction in Nemesis. The main threat there is the title character, Nemesis, who persistently pursues Jill.
The lesser-loved spinoff, “Resident Evil Survivor,” didn’t receive warm nostalgic feelings from many fans. It introduced a fresh set of characters, one of whom had lost their memory, and the gameplay was a first-person light gun adventure. Generally, among these four games, fans often place Resident Evil at the peak.

The Spinoff Console
- Resident Evil: Dead Aim
- Resident Evil Survivor 2 – Code: Veronica
- Resident Evil Outbreak
- Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2
Sony enjoyed remarkable success with the PlayStation 1, but the PlayStation 2 outshone it significantly. However, the PS2 didn’t boast as impressive a collection of exclusive first-edition Resident Evil games compared to its predecessor. Among the standout titles on the PS2 were “Resident Evil: Dead Aim,” “Resident Evil Survivor 2 – Code: Veronica,” “Resident Evil Outbreak,” and “Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2.”
The game titled “Dead Aim” unfolds on a zombie-infested boat, courtesy of Umbrella. Unlike its predecessor Resident Evil Survivor, it allows players to explore the vessel freely with a light gun, shooting down zombies. This blend of perspectives was refreshing compared to being confined to a first-person mode. Conversely, Resident Evil Survivor 2 – Code: Veronica was an on-rails game but boasted superior mechanics and offered an improved narrative over its predecessor. It revisited the storyline of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica for Sega Dreamcast, featuring Chris and Claire Redfield in significant roles.
The game, referred to as “Outbreak,” could be enjoyed solo, yet it was primarily designed for cooperative multiplayer. In this setting, players could select various characters from Raccoon City’s populace. Their goal was to flee the city, battling zombies and solving riddles along the way. This narrative continued in “Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2“. It’s worth noting that games like “Resident Evil 4 ” and “Resident Evil – Code: Veronica X ” were launched on the PS2, albeit not at first.
2. PlayStation3: 4 Games
Co-Op Hit Big
- Resident Evil 5
- Resident Evil 6
- Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City
- Resident Evil: Revelations 2
As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I’d argue that while some may have favored the PS2 or even the original PS1 over the PS3, the latter truly shined in terms of its Resident Evil collection. The PS3 boasted an impressive lineup that included Resident Evil 5, 6, Operation Raccoon City, and Revelations 2. Among these, Resident Evil 5 stands out as a game changer. It introduced Chris Redfield with a new partner, Sheva Alomar, and for the first time in a mainline game, it offered co-op gameplay. Resident Evil 6 also embraced co-op play extensively, featuring numerous playable characters across three full campaigns and numerous side missions featuring even more characters.
Following the 3DS original, Revelations 2 was released as its successor and introduced episodic installments where Claire Redfield teamed up with Moira Burton, while Barry Burton worked alongside Natalia Korda in separate co-op campaigns. Since RE4, the series has leaned more towards action within the horror genre, but this game scaled back slightly to emphasize its oppressive atmosphere of impending doom. Additionally, Operation Raccoon City was another cooperative game that served as a hypothetical scenario where Umbrella agents were tasked with destroying evidence of their criminal activities during the second game’s events. Unfortunately, it didn’t garner much popularity.
Multiple games saw their High-Definition (HD) updates for the first time, such as RE0, the remake of Resident Evil, Code: Veronica X, Revelations, and RE4. Notably, both Xbox 360 and PS3 are almost evenly matched in terms of receiving these original and HD versions concurrently, except for two exclusive HD updates from the Wii: Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.
1. PlayStation 4: 9 Games
An Astounding Number Of Titles
- Resident Evil 2 (2019)
- Resident Evil 3 (2020)
- Resident Evil 4 (2023)
- Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
- Resident Evil Village
- Resident Evil: Revelations 2
- Umbrella Corps
- Resident Evil Re:Verse
- Resident Evil: Resistance
To round things off, it’s important to note that the PS4 boasted the greatest number of games, with many of these also available on the Xbox One. Among the standout titles is “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard,” which delved deeply into horror and introduced a new protagonist, Ethan Winters. This game could even be experienced in virtual reality if desired. The narrative continued in “Resident Evil Village,” which marks the eighth mainline entry, and carries on Ethan’s story.
Enthusiasts were particularly looking forward to the complete remakes of Biohazard (RE2), Code: Veronica (RE3), and RE4 following the success of Biohazard and Village. However, the three multiplayer games – Re:Verse, Resistance, and Umbrella Corps – didn’t really attract a substantial fan base. It’s worth mentioning that Revelations 2 was released in tandem with the PS3 versions.
On the PS4, we saw the arrival of remastered versions of classic Resident Evil titles such as RE0, Resident Evil, Code: Veronica X, Revelations, and RE4, similar to their releases on the PS3. However, this generation introduced enhanced versions of RE5 and RE6. Although major games like the Resident Evil remake were primarily played on the PS5, the PS4 boasted an extensive collection of popular hits.
