The series titled “Dandadan” has captivated many due to its complex narrative that interweaves multiple myths and conspiracy theories. As anime enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the second season set for release in July, manga readers are left puzzled about the identity of Count Saint-Germain.
In later chapters, this character makes several appearances, starting from the conclusion of the Space Globalists storyline. Initially, one might assume the Count to be a villain, but there’s a hint of deeper complexity to him. Is he something other than what he seems?
First Introduction of the Count of Saint-Germain

In the closing chapters of Dandadan, I observed Serpo deliberating over data transmitted by the Kur aliens. Unlike them, a certain Count Saint-Germain seems to be on high alert about a potential invasion. From Serpo’s response, it appears they are well acquainted with this Count or harbor apprehension towards his abilities.
Initially presenting himself as an ally of the Kur aliens, he later appears on Earth, coming across as a respectable and courteous young man. Subsequently, this enigmatic figure increasingly crops up in our encounters.
Who is Count Saint-Germain?

Initially, Yukinobu Tatsu incorporates numerous legends and myths into his creations, leaving us uncertain if Count Saint-Germain is a yokai or an extraterrestrial being. However, it’s significant to mention that Serpo and Turbo Granny are familiar with him, suggesting that Saint-Germain may have a direct role in the activities of both groups.
The name he bears carries a hint of his unique nature. In actuality, there existed a man sharing the same name, active during the late 17th century up until the early 18th century in Europe. He was known by various monikers, but it’s his legend of supposedly living for more than half a millennium that captivates us most. French philosopher Voltaire posited that Count Saint-Germain is an immortal individual with encyclopedic knowledge.
In a similar vein to Saint-Germain in the series “Dandadan”, this character is on a quest to uncover all the world’s mysteries. However, his ambition knows no bounds, as he employs any means necessary – be it underhanded methods or even alien abilities – to amass supernatural powers.
Count Saint-Germain’s Powers
Whether It is Human, Yokai, or Alien, Little Blades Can Steal Their Abilities
One reason some viewers perceive the Count as the villain in the series is due to his collection of skills, which seemingly involve taking the powers of other characters from them. Let’s delve into the Count’s physical capabilities first.
In the confrontation against the Fairy-Tale Card, they truly shone, demonstrating exceptional swordsmanship throughout the fight. Notably, Saint-Germain’s agility and speed were remarkable, rivaling that of transformed Okarun. Moreover, he possessed an extraordinary sixth sense, allowing him to deflect Fairy-Tale Card attacks even without relying on his sight. This ability is reminiscent of both Momo and her grandmother.
In the world of Dandadan, Count Saint-Germain undeniably proves himself as a formidable entity. Yet, this is merely the surface, as we discovered that Count possesses the unique ability to harness the powers of other yokai during combat within the cursed diagram. He carries what resembles medical vials and inserts them into the guard of his katana, enabling him to utilize a variety of abilities.
Beyond being just a sword, this katana holds an extraordinary status, likely the fabled Asura blade. It possesses the power to rob adversaries of their skills, only if they acknowledge defeat before receiving a stroke. Saint-Germain reshaped Asura into numerous miniature blades, resembling small stationery knives. These smaller blades offer more versatility since they can not only be employed within the katana to trigger its power but also passed on to other beings, including humans, which the Count employs for acquiring the abilities of Momo and others.
Is Count Saint-Germain Really an Antagonist?
What’s This Mysterious Character’s Truye Role?
In Chapter 163, victorious over the Fairy-Tale Card, I couldn’t help but unleash the newly-gained powers of the yokai. Eager to test my newfound abilities, I wasted no time in demonstrating them and revealed the purpose behind all my actions.
I yearn to uncover all the secrets hidden in this world, from mystical artifacts and UFOs to anything else that might be out there. I aspire to possess them, including the power associated with Yokai. In essence, I am a seeker of the unknown and supernatural.
Following these words, we believed he could make a fantastic friend for Okarun. Yet, while Okarun dabbles in conspiracy theories as a pastime, Saint-Germain seemingly considers it the purpose of his existence – possibly spanning over hundreds of years. Additionally, he is on a quest for the elusive Dandadan, which can refer to both an item and a power. Mentioning this, the artwork often features Buddhist mandalas, but its true nature remains enveloped in secrecy.
To reach his objectives, Count Saint-Germain resorts to various deceptions. Consequently, he managed to infiltrate Kami High disguised as Sanjome and convinced other students to strip Momo of her powers using the Asura Blade. However, it appears that he doesn’t deliberately mean harm to anyone. In fact, in everyday life, he frequently assists ordinary people, even though this isn’t essential for his disguise since no one can recall him anyway, which could very well be another ability among those the Count possesses.
An additional piece of information that supports the idea Saint-Germain may not always be an adversary is found in chapter 161, where he teams up with Serpo and Okurun to defeat the Fairy-Tale Card. Alternatively, we could say the yokai’s surrender indicates their shared victory. As the Dandadan series progresses, however, more secrets about the Count are gradually revealed, so it’s possible that his true identity will soon be less enigmatic.
