The Crow Movies: Best Versions of the Crow, Ranked

As a seasoned movie-goer who has seen more than my fair share of supernatural flicks, I must say that the portrayal of Eric Draven in the original 1994 The Crow remains unparalleled. Brandon Lee’s charisma was the perfect blend of vulnerability, brooding, vengeful rage, and snappy one-liners, creating a character that has stood the test of time.

Occasionally, a film doesn’t require a follow-up; instead, it works perfectly as a standalone piece. A prime example of this is “The Crow“, the 1994 film adaptation of James O’Barr’s dark comic about revenge. Initially intended for direct-to-video release, it surprisingly made its way to the big screen. It was poised to catapult lead actor Brandon Lee into stardom, but unfortunately, a faulty prop gun led to an unfortunate turn of events that ended his career prematurely.

Despite initial skepticism, it gained popularity as a ’90s cult favorite, prompting novels, a television series, and numerous sequels and reboots. However, none managed to match the original’s charm, but they did offer intriguing interpretations of The Crow character. Some stuck close to the original concept, while others delved deeper into the supernatural realm. Therefore, let’s examine them side by side and determine which one truly reigns supreme.

5 Ashe Corven

The Crow: City Of Angels

  • Played by: Vincent Perez
  • Director: Tim Pope
  • Release: August 1996

In the film “The Crow: City of Angels,” the role of the second avenger connected to crows is taken by Ashe Corven. He seeks vengeance against the criminals who murdered him and his son, Danny. Yet, he struggles with panic attacks and unpredictable outbursts. Interestingly, Sarah, a character from the original movie who has grown into Mia Kirshner in this adaptation, guides him on how to use the crow’s powers.

After understanding the main ideas, he begins to execute remarkable actions, frequently using bird symbols (Kali, portrayed by the original Yellow Power Ranger Thuy Trang, leaves behind a silhouette of a crow in her deadly fall). However, the antagonist, Judah, manages to gain an advantage by stealing his immortality, coming close to executing him. In their attempt to recreate the first Crow’s unique blend of fragility and strength, they instead made Corven more of a pitiable character.

4 Jimmy Cuervo

The Crow: Wicked Prayer

  • Played by: Edward Furlong
  • Director: Lance Mungia
  • Release: July 2005

In present-day recollections, the movie “The Crow: Wicked Prayer” is largely associated with David Boreanaz, who was expected to take on the role of The Crow following his portrayal of supernatural action characters on television. However, in this film, he assumes the part of the satanic antagonist, Luc. The lead character, Jimmy Cuervo, played by Edward Furlong, best known for “Terminator 2” and “American History X”, takes on the role. He embarks on a quest to avenge his own death and that of his girlfriend by pursuing and eliminating Luc.

In this scenario, Cruz exhibits a greater capacity for action compared to Ash, swiftly executing Luc’s henchmen and attempting to thwart his Satanic rite. However, he doesn’t come across as a symbol of justice or vengeance. Instead, he appears more like a teenager who maximized a generous coupon from Spencer’s Gifts, giving off an air of trying too hard to be cool. The distinction between being stylish and appearing as a wannabe can sometimes be subtle, and unfortunately, Cruz seems to have crossed that line.

3 Eric Draven

The Crow (2024)

  • Played by: Bill Skarsgård
  • Director: Rupert Sanders
  • Release: August 2024

Was there word that The Crow had a re-release in theaters? By the response it seems, not many were aware. Its poor reception is on par with Morbius, which gained some temporary popularity due to memes. However, this new film shares more similarities with Spawn. The new Eric Draven character is a rehab patient who’s trying to rescue his late girlfriend’s soul from Hell. It emphasizes the supernatural aspects, featuring an immortal, hell-bound antagonist, and Draven striking bargains with the devil for more chances against him.

16 years later, the film doesn’t shine brightly in terms of its development, but Bill Skarsgård significantly elevates the acting game. His portrayal of Draven unleashes hell on earth as he chases Roeg, yet there seems to be a lack of spark between him and FKA Twigs’ Shelly. It’s no surprise that his character, Draven, begins to question his feelings for her, which paradoxically leads to a loss of his powers. This narrative is slightly more complex than the original material, where a crow served as the source of Draven’s abilities.

2 Alex Corvis

The Crow: Salvation

  • Played by: Eric Mabius
  • Director: Bharat Nalluri
  • Release: January 2000

In a unique blend of genres, The Crow: Salvation combines elements of revenge action and crime thriller stories. The main character, Alex Corvis, is falsely convicted of murdering his girlfriend, Lauren, but in reality, he was framed to protect a group of corrupt police officers who were involved in a drug smuggling operation. To ensure that Lauren would never reveal their secrets, they decided to silence her permanently.

In pursuit of vengeance, Corvis juggles two tasks: gathering proof to clear his name in the eyes of Lauren’s sister, Erin, and carrying out his usual Crow duties, which involve gruesome killings. He is direct and business-like about it, with no detours into Hell or emotional turmoil. The drawback? His appearance leaves much to be desired, due to electric shock wounds that unintentionally give him an overly dramatic eye-shadowed look. This could explain why the sequel, “Wicked Prayer,” opted for a more polished version of Cuervo.

1 Eric Draven

The Crow (1994)

The Crow Movies: Best Versions of the Crow, Ranked
  • Played by: Brandon Lee
  • Director: Alex Proyas
  • Release: May 1994

It’s hardly surprising that many consider the best portrayal of The Crow to be the original character played by Eric Draven, embodied by Brandon Lee. His charm brought the role to life, blending vulnerability, simmering anger, and sharp wit into a timeless figure. What makes this portrayal even more compelling is the way the storyline unfolds as Sarah and Police Sergeant Albrecht struggle to uncover his identity, his purpose, and how he could possibly have returned from the dead.

If the tragic accident that took the actor’s life hadn’t occurred, Lee was scheduled to appear in at least two more “Crow” films. These potential movies might not have surpassed the sequels we’ve seen, but Lee would have undoubtedly made them entertaining with his acting skills. Unfortunately, he demonstrated his uniqueness and indispensability when subsequent attempts to recreate his Crow character failed.
