The Division 2 Was ‘Saved’ By a Team of Five Developers: ‘We Weren’t Supposed to Exist’

At Gamescom, Ubisoft revealed details about the future of The Division 2, which includes the introduction of ‘a significant endeavor’ called The Division 2: Survivors. As The Division 2 moves closer to its tenth anniversary, they have planned additional content, but there were some concerns about the fate of Ubisoft’s legendary third-person shooter MMO, The Division 2, for a while.

On a social media post, Palle Hoffstein, who works as an art producer at Massive Entertainment, shared that a small, brave team breathed new life into The Division 2 when it faced difficulties. This revival resulted in an extraordinary comeback for the game.

‘Something Bigger and Lasting’

Ubisoft shared on social media on August 22 a timeline outlining the near and far future plans for the The Division series, including the upcoming expansions for The Division 2. During this announcement, they also spoke about The Division: Resurgence – a fresh mobile game experience set within The Division’s gritty post-apocalyptic world.

In a series of remarks regarding that post, art producer Palle Hoffstein disclosed that The Division 2 was on the verge of being lost, but a determined group of only five developers managed to rescue it from the brink of extinction.

We had 5 people to restart Division 2. Five! What were we thinking? Ah that was fun.

When our team formed with a few members to revive TD2, I had no desire to spend an extra year or two only for the game to be discontinued again. Instead, our aim was to create something enduring and substantial – that’s what we envisioned and it’s exciting to witness this progress. However, there’s still so much more we aspire to accomplish.

It appears that we’ve found ourselves in an unexpected predicament. Normally, studios plan staffing well ahead to ensure everyone has their roles and responsibilities. However, our situation is unique as we have positions that aren’t currently accounted for on the team roster. Essentially, it seems like we’re a team that shouldn’t technically exist yet.

In 2016, The Division made its grand entry, garnering attention through an impressive marketing strategy and a captivating launch that immersed players in the struggle to reclaim New York from marauding looters, gunmen, and criminal gangs. Following this, The Division 2 was unveiled in 2019 and has since established itself as a mainstay within Ubisoft’s collection of live-service games; however, it experienced some hiccups along the way.

Later on, Palle confessed that at the time of the 2024 crossover event which merged Resident Evil with The Division, he may well have been the sole member left on the D2 team.

As one of the last members still with the D2 team, I was the one who helped launch the Resident Evil content. We had wrapped up our work, but just a few weeks later, they came back to me with a request for another apparel event. Even though we were short on artists at that time, I confidently agreed, thinking I could find a solution, chuckling to myself.

Are you pleased that a team of five developers worked hard to fix The Division 2? Feel free to share your thoughts on the TopMob forum.
