The surprising Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive title, The Duskbloods, has ignited a sense of familiarity among fans of FromSoftware’s earlier works. In fact, the resemblance between it and Bloodborne, FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed 2015 exclusive for PS4, was evident from the very start of the trailer for The Duskbloods. Many consider
It’s understandable that some might draw strong connections between The Duskbloods and Bloodborne, as they both share a Gothic ambiance reminiscent of characters like Van Helsing and Nosferatu. However, it’s important to note that while both games tap into this common influence, they diverge significantly in their narrative directions. Bloodborne leans towards Lovecraftian horror, departing from its predecessors, whereas The Duskbloods seems to delve deeper into vampire folklore. Despite their differences, it’s inevitable that comparisons will be made between The Duskbloods and FromSoftware’s past works, given Bloodborne’s acclaimed status within the studio’s catalog.
Remarkably, it’s worth noting that both Bloodborne and The Duskbloods, despite being distinct games, were console exclusives, sharing an intriguing similarity in their release strategies.
Bloodborne Comparisons Are Inevitable, So The Duskbloods Should Roll With Them
The Duskbloods Should Subvert Bloodborne Expectations, but Not Totally Run From Them
Undeniably, my excitement for The Duskbloods is fueled by the fact that it’ll undoubtedly echo comparisons to the legendary Bloodborne. Even before its launch, and perhaps long after, people will draw parallels. This isn’t unfamiliar terrain – games like Lies of P have been tagged as Bloodborne clones despite their distinct differences from the 2015 masterpiece. Given that FromSoftware is behind this Gothic soulslike game, such comparisons seem inevitable. While it’s essential to applaud innovation and uniqueness (especially with FromSoftware games), being reminiscent of a classic isn’t necessarily a negative aspect.
Consider “Elden Ring,” the 2022 top-seller, frequently referred to as an “open-world Dark Souls.” While this comparison may oversimplify, it’s not without merit. Although there are mechanical differences, Elden Ring shares many similarities with Dark Souls, notably in combat style, encounter design, gear management, and boss creation. It’s possible to trace a direct line from older Dark Souls systems to their counterparts in Elden Ring, such as the weapon arts in Dark Souls 3 and the Ashes of War in Elden Ring. Essentially, Elden Ring could be seen as the pinnacle of FromSoftware’s learnings from the Dark Souls trilogy, refining key elements of the influential action-RPG series and integrating them seamlessly into a brilliantly crafted open world. The same argument might hold true for Bloodborne and The Duskbloods.
The Duskbloods Could Offer a Unique Bloodborne-Adjacent Experience
In my gaming world, I’m excitedly looking forward to diving into a new adventure with The Duskbloods, a game that’s shaping up to be quite different from the single-player experience I had with Bloodborne. Unlike its predecessor, Duskbloods seems to be embracing a unique PvPvE structure, which is something I haven’t seen before.
Moreover, while the dark, gothic atmosphere of Bloodborne was captivating, it looks like Duskbloods is going to amp up the steampunk elements significantly. The teaser trailer gives us a glimpse of this, with images of a functioning train and a character reminiscent of the Rocketeer, who appears to navigate using rocket-powered iron armor. Can’t wait to explore this new universe!
Maybe the perfect representation would be for The Duskbloods to emulate the feel of Bloodborne, featuring similar somber motifs and Gothic designs, while also incorporating distinct mechanical and narrative elements that set it apart. Thus, Duskbloods could serve as a polished, original take on the key artistic aspects of its predecessor, much like how Elden Ring is to Bloodborne’s Dark Souls. Just like in the realm of gaming, fans will simply have to be patient and witness the final product.
