2018 saw Bethesda announcing The Elder Scrolls 6, following which Microsoft (Xbox) acquired Bethesda in 2021. Since then, eager fans have been waiting for seven years. While Bethesda Game Studios was engrossed in creating a new sci-fi RPG called Starfield from 2023 until recently, there was little to no advancement on The Elder Scrolls 6. It’s now been about two years since then, but we still haven’t received any updates. Many hoped the recent Xbox Games Showcase would bring an update, but unfortunately, it did not.
At the showcase event, Xbox leader Phil Spencer hinted at Xbox’s upcoming lineup for 2026, revealing titles like Fable and Forza Horizon 6 among others. Interestingly, The Elder Scrolls 6 wasn’t mentioned in this list, suggesting that it may not be released in 2026. Therefore, fans of The Elder Scrolls series should plan to wait until 2027 or later for the next installment following Skyrim.
If Spencer didn’t mention The Elder Scrolls 6 during his tease about next year’s Xbox lineup doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but its absence from the showcase suggests that it’s unlikely to come out next year. When we do hear about it again, it will probably be at an Xbox Games Showcase. However, a reveal of this magnitude in June is highly unlikely to occur during the same year as its release, since Bethesda and Xbox would want ample time for marketing their biggest release of the generation.
It’s unusual that a recent report circulating within Xbox is about a new game trailer. However, it’s becoming clearer that this isn’t a promotional video intended for the public, but an internal one to demonstrate achievements and advancements. Such trailers are typical in AAA game development.
While it’s important to remember that speculation should be taken with a pinch of salt, the likelihood of The Elder Scrolls 6 releasing in 2026 was always slim. Now, it appears that it’s not happening at all. A release in 2027 seems quite plausible given the development timelines, context so far, and the expected release of the next Xbox. However, a release as late as 2028 is also possible. If we go beyond that, it might indicate some development challenges, but there’s been no indication of such problems thus far.
