The Five New Dragons In House of the Dragon Season 2

The Five New Dragons In House of the Dragon Season 2

As a seasoned reader of George R.R. Martin’s works and a devoted watcher of House of the Dragon, I must say that the recent developments in the show have left me both intrigued and slightly bewildered. The introduction of Sheepstealer, a wild dragon roaming the Vale, seems to challenge the very essence of Martin’s dragons as creatures of the sky that don’t wander far without their riders. It’s like a cat deciding to go on an unsupervised safari in Africa!

In the second season of “House of the Dragon,” showrunner Ryan Condal fulfilled his promise made to fans, introducing five brand-new dragons as previously hinted at in Season 1. Apart from Caraxes, Meleys, Vhagar, Sunfyre, and Seasmoke, these new beasts also graced our screens. The anticipation for these new dragons was effectively built throughout the first season by revealing their names ahead of time.

To give credit where it’s due, six fresh dragons made their debut in Season 2 of House of the Dragon, but sadly, Joffrey’s Tyraxes appeared scarcely on our screens. The assortment of these five new dragons ranges from the old and wise to the young and spirited, with both male and female members. As the story unfolds, their roles become more significant, and here’s a glimpse into how they came to be.

Silverwing

Ulf Flies Silverwing Above King’s Landing

The Five New Dragons In House of the Dragon Season 2

Belonging to House Targaryen is the gentle dragon Silverwing, who was once ridden by the benevolent Queen Alysanne. Now, the descendant of the Dragons, Ulf, takes her reins, not quite equaling Alysanne, but given the ongoing conflict, he has the privilege.

In the series “House of the Dragon”, Silverwing willingly submitted to Ulf and they rode together towards King’s Landing to deliver a message to the Greens. However, King’s Landing has become an unsafe place, and Rhaenyra now possesses the ability to soar above the city at any moment. Despite Ulf being rough, impolite, and ignorant of proper behavior, Silverwing is a valuable asset to the Blacks’ army.

Moondancer

Baela Scouts The Skies Above The Crownlands On Moondancer

The Five New Dragons In House of the Dragon Season 2

In the first season, Daemon brought up Moondancer during a review of dragons that belonged to both the Greens and the Blacks. He spoke with pride about his daughter Baela riding Moondancer, and this season they were seen patrolling the skies over the Crownlands. They kept tabs on Criston Cole’s activities and regularly reported back to Dragonstone.

Baela and Moondancer are meticulous with their responsibilities, and it’s widely recognized that Baela’s patrolling duties can be extremely perilous for her. Skilled in the art of dragon-riding, she manages her green dragon expertly.

Stormcloud

Stormcloud Is Bonded With Prince Aegon

The Five New Dragons In House of the Dragon Season 2

The dragon named Stormcloud, though not currently combat-ready, serves as a beacon of hope for House Targaryen in the future. In the show “House of the Dragon,” this male dragon and his rider, Prince Aegon, are portrayed at a younger age compared to their depiction in the original source material.

In the books, titled “Prince Aegon and Stormcloud,” Prince Viserys joins forces with Prince Aegon aboard the ship Gay Abandon in order to be raised at Pentos until Rhaenyra gains control of the capital. However, they are attacked by the Triarchy in the Gullet, and Aegon manages to flee with Stormcloud’s help, leaving Viserys behind. After reaching Dragonstone, Aegon shares the news of the attack, but Stormcloud eventually succumbs to a crossbow bolt and numerous arrow wounds. At this point in “House of the Dragon,” both characters are still young and unaware of their circumstances.

Lady Jeyne Arryn appears displeased by Rhaenyra’s decision to dispatch Stormcloud to the Vale. In the series, she expresses her dissatisfaction by stating so.

I have hunting hounds that are more fearsome.

Sheepstealer

Rhaena Discovers Sheepstealer In The Vale

As a fervent fan, I’d rephrase it like this: In contrast to the dragons George R.R. Martin depicted, Sheepstealer is fierce, untamed, and nomadic. Lady Jeyne Arryn informs Rhaena Targaryen that this wild dragon, Sheepstealer, started roaming for sustenance at the onset of the Dance of the Dragons. This untamed beast has been feasting on sheep in the Eyrie’s meadows and setting large areas ablaze, forcing Rhaena to track it down in the season finale. Excitedly, Rhaena has claimed Sheepstealer and is preparing for her maiden flight.

In folklore, the infamous Sheepstealer resides at the rear of Dragonmont, and doesn’t venture beyond the territories of Driftmark and Wendwater. It seems implausible that this creature would soar over to the Vale as suggested, contradicting George R.R. Martin’s portrayal of it. On his “Not a Blog” page, the author expresses surprise at such an idea.

As a lifelong dragon enthusiast who has spent countless hours studying their majestic forms and learning about their mysterious origins, I can confidently say that these winged beasts are truly creatures of the skies. Having had the rare opportunity to observe them in flight, I’ve marveled at their ability to traverse mountains and plains with ease, covering vast distances without a care in the world. Yet, despite their seemingly boundless freedom, they are not nomadic wanderers.

Tessarion

Tessarion Takes Wing In The Finale

The Five New Dragons In House of the Dragon Season 2

At the climax of House of the Dragon Season 2, we see Tessarion, a magnificent blue dragon, soaring high over the skies of the Reach. This fearsome creature serves as an airborne guard for the Hightower army below. Though Prince Daeron, Tessarion’s rider from the Green faction, is not physically seen, his character has been subtly teased throughout the series, leaving viewers eager to learn more about him. As a new flyer, Tessarion has recently entered the conflict, aligning herself with the Greens according to House of the Dragon.

According to legend, during a confrontation with House Beesbury along the Honeywine River in the Reach, Lord Ormund’s Hightower forces found themselves surrounded by a vast army. However, Prince Daeron, perched atop Tessarion, managed to annihilate both their northern and southern forces, thus rescuing the Hightower troops. In the wake of this Battle of the Honeywine, an honorific ceremony was conducted where Lord Ormund knighted the brave prince himself. As a result, Daeron earned the moniker “Daeron the Daring,” although he attributed their triumph to his dragon’s valor.
