The Forest: How To Enter The Sinkhole Safely

As a seasoned survivor of The Forest, I can confidently say that the Sinkhole is one of the most intriguing and challenging aspects of this gripping survival horror game. Having spent countless hours on this island, battling cannibals, building shelters, and searching for my lost son Timmy, I’ve learned a thing or two about navigating the treacherous depths of the Sinkhole.

In The Forest, a survival horror game developed by Endnight Games, you assume the role of Eric LeBlanc, a father who experiences a harrowing crash-landing on a treacherous island alongside his son. Shortly after, an unsettling sequence unfolds where Eric’s young son, Timmy, is abducted by cannibals while he remains barely conscious. Your mission then becomes one of survival as you explore the island and search for your lost child, constantly facing off against terrifying adversaries.

In the heart of the peninsula lies a colossal crater known as the Sinkhole. To progress, players must discover an entrance into this enormous pit and delve into its subterranean caverns for hints regarding Timmy. But beware, descending into it isn’t simple due to its immense depth; leaping in carelessly would prove fatal. Here you will find guidance on how to access the Sinkhole within The Forest game.

Sinkhole Location In The Forest

The Forest: How To Enter The Sinkhole Safely

Locating the Sinkhole is quite straightforward if you possess a Map and Compass. If you don’t have them yet, search for them inside the Hanging Cave, which is situated near the main cannibal village. In case of death, you’ll be revived automatically in that cave. Alternatively, it can also be found on the southeastern side of the peninsula.

After obtaining the map, press ‘M’ to display it. Next, select the compass by pressing the ‘I’ key and choose it. With both map and compass, face the direction indicated by the upward arrow on the compass (north) and walk in that direction until you reach the Sinkhole. Alternatively, if you don’t have a map, locate the snow-capped mountains visible from any open area. Since they are to the north, head towards them to discover the Sinkhole.

How To Get Into The Sinkhole In The Forest

In The Forest’s Sinkhole, there are multiple methods for gaining entry, such as these examples:

Using The Glider

One efficient and secure approach for reaching the depths of the Sinkhole is by assembling a Submersible craft. Once you locate the Submersible Blueprint hidden in an underwater grotto close to shipping containers, players can construct it. Upon acquiring the blueprint, navigate towards the Sinkhole and build this underwater vehicle using these materials:

  • 6 Bone
  • 8 Rabbit Fur
  • 8 Rope
  • 2 Arm
  • 1 Head
  • 32 Stick

As a gamer, once I grab the Glider, I equip it by hitting the ‘E’ key. Then, when I’m ready, I leap into the Sinkhole and steer my way using the ‘S’ and ‘W’ keys for direction control. If I feel myself getting wobbly, I’ll only press ‘G’ to release the glider, but make sure I do it close to the ground to prevent a harsh landing.

Entering The Sinkhole Cave

An alternative route to get to the base of the Sinkhole is by venturing into the nearby Cave of the Sinkhole. The cave entrance can be found close to a white tent and with a view of the northern mountain range. Once you’re inside, the cave will guide you to a shallower part of the Sinkhole that, while not as deep as the ledge above, is still quite high. From there, exercise caution as you navigate by jumping from stone to stone to reach solid ground.

Beware of possible cannibals nearby, and make sure your weapons are at hand while venturing towards the Sinkhole.

Equipping The Turtle Shell

Turtle shells are fantastic for coasting down slopes within The Forest, and they serve their purpose equally well when entering a Sinkhole. You can acquire one by catching turtles along the southern beach. After acquiring the shell, make your way to the Sinkhole, select it from your inventory, and attach it by performing a jump and left-click on the screen. Since you can easily disengage the shell, it’s best to initiate sliding as soon as possible after attaching it. However, remember to ride the walls with the shell rather than plunging straight in.

Crafting The Free Standing Zip-Line

Players can successfully navigate to the end of the Sinkhole using a Freestanding Zip-Line. To start, open your Survival Manual, choose the Zip-Line from the Tools category, and begin assembling it with logs and cords. Typically, you’d require 10 logs and three ropes for construction, but because of the extended distance over the Sinkhole, you’ll need more rope this time. To set it up, position one Zip-Line stand at one end of the Sinkhole and another at the opposite side. Once ready, approach the first stand, press ‘E’ to attach yourself, and glide towards the center of the Sinkhole. Upon reaching above the pond, press ‘E’ again to disengage.

Because timing is essential, ensure that you leap onto the water rather than the rocks, only when you spot it, to avoid landing there.

Sliding Down Into The Sinkhole

Lastly, you can get into the Sinkhole in The Forest by sliding down the rocks. It might seem complicated and even dangerous at first, but you can avoid most of the damage by sticking close to the rocks. To begin, head to the north side of the Sinkhole. Then, slide down while facing the rocky wall and pressing the ‘W’ key. Jump when needed. If your health drops, use Meds or a Health Mix to heal fast.
