Samar Studio has officially released the full version of their game, The Front, today! If you’ve been watching the game since it launched in October 2023, this is a major milestone. If you’re new to the game, here’s the gist: it’s a post-apocalyptic survival game where you build vehicles from the ground up, and your design choices really matter.
In The Front, you’ll explore a 36 square kilometer wasteland as a member of a resistance fighting against a cruel empire. While there is a story, the real appeal lies in the challenging survival gameplay and the deep vehicle customization. You’ll spend your time collecting resources, creating new technologies, building bases with automatic defenses, and meticulously designing unique war machines from a huge variety of parts.
What really makes The Front unique is its focus on vehicles. You can’t just choose a vehicle; you build one. Lightweight frames are quick but fragile, while heavy armor is durable but slow. Plus, you have limited space for weapons and need to carefully manage power and weight. It’s all about making tough choices between speed, protection, and firepower, depending on your mission.
What’s New: Zombie Hordes And Weapon Upgrades

Update 1.0 introduces the Zombie Horde Dungeon, a challenging new experience focused on testing your vehicle-building skills in intense combat. You’ll drive powerful, armored vehicles through massive groups of zombies, smashing through enemies and obstacles. But it’s more than just driving – the zombies have evolved! They can now jump onto your vehicle, forcing you to keep moving and actively use your defenses to survive.
These dungeons now feature two challenging endgame bosses. Defeating them will reward you with rare items and the best equipment in the game. This system is designed to truly test your vehicle’s durability in long fights – does your design hold up under pressure, or do you need to revisit your build and make some changes?
As a huge fan of building crazy vehicles in this game, I was really excited about this update! They’ve seriously expanded the Vehicle Assembly system. Now, instead of just focusing on direct damage, you can really control the battlefield. Things like flamethrowers, toxin sprayers, and electric cannons let you create areas of effect and deal damage over time, which is awesome. But it doesn’t stop there! You can add things like sawblades, drills, and even harvesters to your vehicles, turning them into these hybrid machines that can both gather resources and destroy anything that gets too close. It’s not just about building a weapon anymore; you’re creating vehicles that can actually do multiple things, and that’s a game-changer.
Teams can now build vehicles together on the platform, making collaboration easier. Plus, you can finally customize your vehicles with different paints and colors! These new features give long-time players more ways to strategize, and new players get access to everything right from the start.
The Core Survival Experience
The game’s core gameplay loop involves exploring abandoned locations, gathering materials, creating tools, and establishing bases throughout a large world. You start with basic equipment and gradually advance to high-tech military gear by unlocking blueprints through a skill-based system. To craft the best items, you’ll need Ether Shards, which are earned by defeating enemies and venturing into risky areas.
You can disable non-player characters (NPCs) using jammers, and then recruit them as followers. These followers will fight with you and help operate your crafting stations, making production faster. You can also customize your followers with specialized talent trees if you want to fine-tune their abilities.
Build a fully customizable base anywhere on the map using tons of different parts. You can set up clever defenses like pressure plates that activate turrets and sensors that detect enemies. It’s all about creating strong positions with overlapping fire, funneling enemies into traps, and planning escape routes. These advanced defenses are especially useful against the tougher enemies, like bombers and assassins, added in the 1.0 update. On player-versus-player servers, your base design will be put to the test – it either holds up against raids, or it doesn’t.
As you get stronger, combat evolves from simple weapons to more powerful options like explosives, advanced guns, tanks, and helicopters – all unlocked by researching new technologies. You can also protect yourself from dangerous environments with hazmat suits and see in the dark with night vision goggles. Beyond building your own custom vehicles, there are over 20 different base vehicle types to choose from. Improving your skills and unlocking better gear dramatically increases your combat possibilities.
Different Ways To Play
If you’re not a fan of the typical survival game experience, Adventure Mode offers a different way to play. It’s designed for up to six players and focuses on completing missions with boss fights and specific goals. Unlike Standard Mode, Adventure Mode doesn’t have a persistent world, meaning you progress by finishing missions instead of gathering resources. This is ideal for players who enjoy combat and building vehicles but don’t want the challenges of survival – like managing resources or worrying about losing progress due to raids. Both Adventure Mode and the standard game received new content with the 1.0 update.
The game is built using Unreal Engine and features enhancements like DLSS and XeSS for better graphics. It supports thirteen languages, including English, French, German, Russian, Japanese, both Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Latin American Spanish, Korean, and Thai. A strong community of almost 70,000 fans has formed on platforms like Discord, Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, where the developers at Samar Studio regularly engage with players.
The Front stands out because vehicle engineering isn’t just an add-on – it’s central to the game. The new 1.0 update expands on this with specialized weapons and attachments that add real strategy to vehicle combat. The challenging Zombie Horde Dungeon lets you put your engineering skills to the test, and combined with base defense, a large map, followers, and faction warfare, The Front offers a unique experience in the survival game genre.
This game is for players who enjoy combining survival gameplay with detailed engineering and customization. If you love designing and testing vehicle setups, especially in challenging fights, and want a survival game where vehicle customization is just as important as building a base, this is for you.
The Front is now available on Steam with a 15% discount for the next two weeks! Both new and returning players can enjoy the complete game. Returning players will find the Zombie Horde Dungeon and Vehicle Assembly system have been updated. You can find it on the Steam store, and we invite you to join our Discord community to share your vehicle creations and plan your attacks on the zombie hordes!
