Norman Caruso, known as The Gaming Historian, has announced he’s stopping video production on his YouTube channel. After 15 years of creating content on the platform since 2009, he’s posted a final video and is concluding his work there.
People making videos about video games have been a part of YouTube for a long time, but it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Many faced issues with copyright claims and having to remove their content. One creator, The Gaming Historian, started making videos very early on – just five years after YouTube began.
The Gaming Historian Calls it Quits
After 15 years, The Gaming Historian has announced he’s ending his YouTube channel. In a recent video – his first since April 2024 – he explained his decision. His last in-depth video, a deep dive into the game The Oregon Trail, took years to complete and left him feeling exhausted. He initially planned to take a break and return to making videos part-time, hoping to regain his passion. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and he’s now decided to end the channel.
Caruso has announced he’s ending his YouTube channel, expressing gratitude to his viewers and saying he’s enjoyed creating content for years. He wants to stop while he can still maintain quality, rather than continue making videos just for the sake of it. His planned next video would have covered a 1982 lawsuit where Universal claimed Nintendo’s Donkey Kong infringed on their copyright. He researched the case at the National Archives in 2020, but now that he’s decided not to make the video, he’s shared those research documents publicly through the Internet Archive.
After many years, the creator of The Game Historian, Caruso, is closing his YouTube channel, prompting an outpouring of gratitude from fans and fellow content creators. Over the years, he’s created 144 videos about video games – covering everything from Nintendo and classic consoles to Sega games and unique gaming collectibles. Although the channel is ending, all the videos will stay on YouTube. Caruso isn’t leaving content creation altogether; he and his wife are starting a new podcast called “The Old Timey Podcast” that will focus on broader historical topics.
Fifteen years is a significant commitment for any creative project, and The Gaming Historian’s decision to stop making videos reflects that. He joins other prominent figures like MatPat from The Game Theorists and game developer Masahiro Sakurai, who have also stepped back from regular content creation. Though fans will miss him, his videos will remain a valuable source of information about video game history.
