As a seasoned gamer with decades of immersion in the digital world, I can’t help but appreciate Hermen Hulst’s wisdom and foresight. His stance on AI in game development strikes a chord with my own beliefs. I’ve seen games that were so reliant on AI they lost their heart, their soul – the human touch that makes them truly memorable.
During PlayStation‘s 30th anniversary celebration, one of its CEOs, Hermen Hulst, spoke to the BBC and was asked about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in game development, a topic that has been a contentious issue for quite some time, as some developers have shifted focus towards AI at times, potentially impacting human team members.
Hulst assured that while AI has the potential to revolutionise game development, ‘preserving the human touch’ is still of the utmost importance.
Authenticity
During a conversation with the BBC, the two leaders of PlayStation, Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino (who share the CEO role), discussed the history, current state, and upcoming plans for the PlayStation brand.
Kicking off the interview, Hermen Hulst discussed the role of AI in game creation as he manages software at Sony’s leading gaming company. In contrast, Nishino primarily concentrates on hardware development for the same firm.
Hulst explained:
As a gamer, I’ve got a feeling that the future of gaming is going to be all about striking a balance. On one side, there’s an undeniable pull towards immersive, AI-driven gaming experiences that push boundaries and offer something fresh and exciting. On the other hand, there’s a deep yearning for carefully crafted, thoughtful content that speaks to our emotions and engages us on a deeper level. So, it seems like we’ll be asking for both – the thrill of AI-driven innovation and the charm of handcrafted, heartfelt gaming content.
Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial.
AI significantly accelerates advancements in development by facilitating procedures like procedural generation, a speed previously unattainable. It’s also employed to streamline time-consuming, monotonous, or potentially disruptive tasks, which could otherwise hinder the development process.
In essence, this involves jeopardizing jobs, unlawfully assuming others’ identities, and instilling fear among workers across various industries globally.
During the conversation, Hulst and Nishino delved into topics such as Astro Bot’s triumph, advancements in live-action transformations, and the early days of PlayStation. Nishino shared an interesting story about his childhood, where he used to demonstrate gaming devices at his mother’s store for customers who were unaware of this new technology as it was first coming onto the scene.
