As a long-time gamer and follower of the gaming industry, I’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs. But the recent turn of events at Humble Games has left me feeling disheartened and frustrated.
On Tuesday, I was disappointed to learn that Humble Games, a beloved subsidiary of IGN Entertainment, was undergoing some changes. Initially, there were rumors circulating that the publishing studio was shutting down entirely. However, Humble Games released an official statement clarifying that it was merely a “restructuring” process, not a closure.
Now, nearly 24 hours later, the situation is only getting messier.
On Taylor’s third day of the week, Chris Radley, a previous creative head at Humble Bundle, shared on LinkedIn that this was not just a reorganization of Humble Games’ operations, but rather an complete closure of Humble Games.
I’ve been following the recent developments at Humble Games with a heavy heart. As someone who has worked in the tech industry for years, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of disappointment and frustration when I read about yet another failed leadership decision that leaves hard-working and talented staff without jobs.
An additional detail is that after receiving a confirmation recording, it was revealed that all ongoing Humble Games initiatives would be managed by The Powell Group, an external firm.
Steve Horowitz, the president of technology and shopping at Ziff Davis, admitted that the company unsuccessfully tried to sell Humble Games on several occasions before ultimately choosing to close it down. No satisfactory proposal or result emerged from these efforts.
After making that statement, he explained that the company had incurred “extra millions in development costs,” resulting in the challenging yet essential choice to restructure Humble Games as a whole.
Horowitz announced that starting from now, a external company will take over the management of our current and future game lineup, including the back catalog. This decision will affect all positions within Humble Games.
Although Humble Games was labeled as undergoing a “restructuring,” in reality, the company has no remaining employees. Effectively, Humble Games no longer exists beyond its name.
We’ve reached out to TopMob’s contact at IGN Entertainment and Ziff Davis again for further explanation. Specifically, we’re seeking details on the allegations that their recent statement was generated by an AI and information about their plans for operating without any staff.
Should a response be received, it will be added to this story.
