In a brief span of time, HBO’s highly anticipated series “The Last of Us” is coming back for its second season, inspired by the storyline of Naughty Dog’s second game. But before viewers can delve into the new events, the actor portraying Abby Anderson feels it necessary to clarify some rumors about “enhanced security” that have been circulating.
For the second season of “The Last of Us”, original cast members Pedro Pascal (as Joel), Bella Ramsey (Ellie), Gabriel Luna (Tommy), and Rutina Wesley as Maria will return, alongside new additions such as Isabela Merced as Dina, Catherine O’Hara in an undisclosed role, Jeffrey Wright as Issac, and Young Mazino as Jesse. However, one contentious addition to the second season of “The Last of Us” has been the introduction of Abby Anderson, sparking much discussion among fans of the game. In the television series, Abby is portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever. She is a Firefly member who was left devastated after her father’s death and seeks revenge for his demise in any way possible, even increasing her physical strength to prepare for the impending war.

Despite the fact that Dever may not share Abby’s bulky physique from “The Last of Us Part 2,” which has sparked debate among fans since the announcement, another issue had been circulating concerning Dever requiring additional security during season 2 filming due to an increase in potential threats related to her character’s actions. During a podcast interview last year with Josh Horowitz on “Happy Sad Confused,” actress Isabella Merced, who portrays Dina, disclosed that Dever had extra security on set. However, speaking to Variety, Dever has since clarified that these claims are unfounded.
In response to being asked if she was ready for the massive fanbase following The Last of Us Season 2, as well as addressing previous statements attributed to Merced, Dever swiftly dispelled those rumors. “To set the record straight,” Dever said, “I never personally made those comments and they are not accurate.” Remaining optimistic about her portrayal of Abby, Dever shared her excitement for the role, stating, “I’m adding my unique energy to it. I want to do the character justice, and I hope fans will appreciate my take on it.
Although it’s reassuring that Dever didn’t require additional security, the initial comment from Merced remains puzzling. Perhaps it was a misunderstanding or a communication mishap, as Laura Bailey, who played Abby in the game, experienced abusive comments and even death threats against her child. It’s only natural to hope that Dever’s character in The Last of Us season 2 won’t face similar hostility as Abby did when The Last of Us Part 2 was released in 2020.
In April 2025, we can anticipate the second season of The Last of Us coming back on our screens. At present, though, HBO has not disclosed an exact release date for the new episodes.
