The Last of Us Inspired One of the Most Long-Awaited Zombie Movies Coming This Year

In a recent conversation between Neil Druckmann and Alex Garland, they immediately touched upon how The Last of Us played a significant role in the development of 28 Years Later. This upcoming zombie film has generated considerable anticipation for quite some time now, as it’s nearly two decades since the release of its prequel in the series.

Neil Druckmann serves as the head of Naughty Dog, creators of the critically acclaimed game The Last of Us. On the other hand, Alex Garland is a key figure behind the ’28 Days’ series, known for its dark and suspenseful storytelling. In a recent interview, Garland expressed high regard for The Last of Us and admitted that it played a significant role in influencing the upcoming ’28 Years Later’, as he drew inspiration from it.

Inspiring Art

As a diehard fan, I can’t help but express my admiration for the groundbreaking post-apocalyptic series known as “The Last of Us.” This masterpiece first graced our screens in 2013 with its debut game, and it left such an indelible mark that it was continued with “The Last of Us Part II” in 2020. The latest addition to this epic saga, the HBO live-action adaptation released in 2023, has also been showered with accolades, just like its predecessors.

Next month, the second season of that show will debut.

During a special chat titled ‘Creator to Creator,’ Alex Garland and Neil Druckmann recently sat with Sony for an hour-long conversation, delving into their creative works spanning the past few decades.

In the discussion, Alex Garland immediately expresses his appreciation for The Last of Us, stating that it surpassed the greatness of 28 Days Later.

Let me say this.

The Last of Us is better than 28 Days.

The thing about The Last of Us was, I was like, ‘Oh, this is so much more sophisticated’.

Here’s the full interview:

In his own words, Garland shared that The Last of Us inspired him to elevate his work for the upcoming film titled 28 Years Later. This movie is being released much later than the 2007 debut of its prequel, 28 Weeks Later. Set in the United Kingdom, the story unfolds in a society that has survived far beyond a catastrophic collapse triggered by an unprecedented spread of the ‘Rage’ virus.

Afterward, he brought up his admiration for The Last of Us, finding it captivating from the perspective of a player and an author. He commended the game’s rhythm and smoothness, as well as its cinematic nature.

It’s clear that The Last of Us and 28 Years Later share many common themes. For example, in both stories, the catastrophic infection that has largely wiped out humanity doesn’t involve the traditional ‘raising of the dead’ zombie scenario, but rather a corruption of the living. Additionally, the appearance and modeling of the infected characters are strikingly similar in these two titles.

28 Years Later showcases a decaying world, evident in the lush, wrecked environments, evocative of The Last of Us.

In 28 Years Later, we see a world left to deteriorate, and this is clear in the overgrown, damaged locations that resemble The Last of Us.

And one more:

The environments in 28 Years Later are filled with decay, much like The Last of Us, as they depict a world abandoned for 28 years.
