Summary
- The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PC will require a PlayStation Network account, frustrating some prospective players.
- The game will be released on April 3, 2025.
When “The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered” arrives for PC later in the year, you’ll still need a PlayStation Network account to play it. Sony has faced some criticism regarding their PC ports of previously exclusive games in recent years. Despite bringing beloved titles like “The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered” to Steam, they persist in mandating that players create or link a PSN account to experience the game, which doesn’t sit well with everyone.
The initial version of “The Last of Us,” now titled “The Last of Us Part 1,” was released on PC in the year 2022. Following the successful debut, Sony is planning to transfer “The Last of Us Part 2” to PC on April 3, 2025. This development is thrilling because the critically acclaimed sequel was exclusively playable for PlayStation users before, and its remaster needed a PS5. Yet, the announcement of a requirement for a PSN account might dampen the enthusiasm for certain gamers.
On the Steam page for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, there’s a note indicating that you need a PlayStation Network account to play the game and that you can connect your current PSN account with your Steam profile. This might seem minor, but some players have expressed dissatisfaction about this requirement in past PC versions of PlayStation games. In fact, the reaction was so intense last year that Sony removed the PSN requirement from Helldivers 2 before they could even roll out an update introducing it.
Sony Is Still Trying to Get More PC Players to Create a PSN Account
In certain instances, it’s logical for users to need a PSN account. For instance, the PC version of “Ghost of Tsushima” demands a PSN profile for multiplayer or PlayStation overlay usage. However, “The Last of Us” is a single-player game, so network features and cross-play wouldn’t be significant concerns. Therefore, the announcement of this requirement can seem peculiar. It appears to be a strategy to encourage users who don’t own a PlayStation to adopt Sony’s services, which makes sense from a business standpoint but is a daring decision considering past user reactions to similar moves.
Using the PlayStation Network (PSN) account for the first time is effortless since it’s free. However, adding or linking an additional profile can be somewhat troublesome for gamers eager to jump straight into their games. Unfortunately, the PSN isn’t accessible in every country, which could render the PC version of the game unplayable for certain enthusiasts. Given that The Last of Us series is renowned for its gaming accessibility, such a restriction might not sit well with some players.
