In essence, “The Last of Us” is a series that unfolds in a world overtaken by an infection that transforms humans into the undead. Yet, it’s not just about the rise of zombies; it delves deep into how cities adapt and endure amidst an apocalypse. While the first season focused on FEDRA’s attempts to safeguard humanity by confining them to a single location, the second season explores Seattle’s survival strategies during the apocalypse. In “The Last of Us” Season 2, Ellie and Dina traverse Seattle in search of Abby and the group responsible for Joel’s death. Concurrently, we see the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) asserting control over Seattle, while they wage war against a religious faction that believes the WLF to be wicked.
Amidst all that’s happening, Season 2 presented a heartfelt scene between Ellie and Dina, where they admitted their love for one another. However, Ellie realizes that Dina’s pregnancy shifts many aspects of her life as well. Ellie feels deeply responsible for Dina’s welfare because she cannot bear to lose another loved one. Despite the changes, Dina and Ellie remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice for Joel’s death. Yet, they are unsure about their next steps. How will they navigate towards Lakehill hospital, where they can locate Abby and her group? Let’s explore what unfolded in Episode 5 of The Last of Us Season 2.
WLF Soldiers Encounter a New Variation of the Infected

The narrative opens as Hanharan ventures into a room filled with soldiers. A closed, secured door at the basement catches her eye. Leaving the hall behind, she steps into a cabin where Sergeant Elise Park is held, awaiting questioning regarding a tragic incident that unfolded in the basement. Intrigued, Hanharan queries Elise about the mishap and the significant number of casualties among her troops.
According to Park, she and her group took charge of securing the hospital. They swept clear the ground level all the way up to the sixth floor, where they came across a few infected individuals, but managed them without much trouble. Then, they shifted their focus to the basements (B1, B2, and B3). Park acknowledged that her team might face some challenging circumstances there, as it’s an environment that the infected typically favor. Additionally, she mentioned that these floors were significant because they were where the initial Cordyceps fungus infections occurred back in 2003. However, getting teams to these levels had been problematic due to limited access. Consequently, Sergeant Park dispatched a team into the basement through a functional stairwell that hadn’t been caved in yet.
The group, comprising a soldier named Leon (and others), explored areas B1 and B2. On B2, they discovered Cordyceps growth on the walls and floor. They anticipated finding infected individuals in B3, yet chose to continue their search on the final level. A few minutes later, Leon over the radio informed Park of an infection in the air, requesting that the team be confined within the basement. Park confirmed that the infection couldn’t have originated from the vents because if it had, everyone would already be infected. Consequently, they sealed off the only entrances to B1 and B2. Hanharan praised Park for her bravery in handling the situation and expressed his sympathy for her losses. Ultimately, it was disclosed that Leon was Sergeant Park’s son.
Ellie Wants Dina To Go Back, While Dina Tells a Terrifying Childhood Story

While Dina is working on figuring out the whereabouts of WLF soldiers in order to track down Joel’s killers, she’s using a walkie-talkie that Dina and Ellie snatched from the WLF before they were attacked by infected. The information Dina is gathering about the WLF’s location helps them strategize their next move. Ellie thinks the WLF are being overly cautious, revealing too much about their positioning and movements. However, Dina suspects that the reason for this openness might be because they’re battling an adversary who doesn’t have access to such advanced technology like the Scars, who primarily use bows and arrows.
They begin pondering on strategies to get to the hospital building and locate Abby and her group. Dina informs Ellie that the WLF soldiers move from north to south, but there’s an unguarded sector leading to a substantial structure. Ellie understands that the WLF avoids this building due to the infected. If they can navigate through that area and the building, they might find Nora (Tati Gabrielle) on the first floor in the hospital. Ellie and Dina recognize their plan as risky, but it’s a necessity if they are determined to avenge Joel’s death. As they progress, they encounter some motionless Scars, which unsettles Ellie.
Dina doesn’t pause in her narrative, revealing to Ellie about the first life she took. She was only eight years old at the time, and her mother was reluctant to let her play outside due to the apocalypse. However, one day, against her mother’s wishes, she ventured out armed. Upon returning, a raider had killed her mother and sister and was still inside their home. Overwhelmed by the situation, Dina took the raider’s life at such a tender age.
When Ellie inquires about how Dina managed to reach Jackson, Dina interrupts and states that if she hadn’t slipped out earlier, she might have witnessed her mother and sister’s brutal murder. But would it have made any difference if her family had attacked their people first? Dina emphasizes that if she hadn’t killed the raider on that fateful day, she would have relentlessly pursued him.
Dina concludes the conversation by giving Ellie a choice: to leave or continue forward. If anything were to happen to her, it wouldn’t be on Ellie’s conscience, but her own. Ultimately, Ellie decides to press on.
Ellie and Dina Are Saved by [Spoiler] and Encounter the Scars

At nightfall, Ellie and Dina make their way into a building. As soon as they’re inside, Dina suggests they should carry knives for defense or run if things get chaotic, adding that she has feelings for Ellie before doing so. Ellie acknowledges and approves the plan as they step into a vast room within the building. Tension rises when they spot an infected individual and attempt to handle the situation. The creature they encountered was reminiscent of what Ellie had faced in Jackson, being cunning and capable of deceit.
They discover that several people are infected in the hall, necessitating a quick plan. Ellie proposes to draw them towards her while Dina makes a run for the closest door and locks herself inside. Initially, it appears they may escape, but the infected overpower them, leaving the impression of an impending casualty. However, just when all seems lost, someone arrives to rescue them.
In due course, it’s unveiled that Jesse had come to their rescue and guided them out of the building. A handful of WLF soldiers attempted to eliminate them, but fortunately, the group found refuge in a park where WLF troops didn’t venture. Ellie queries Jesse about his companionship, to which he replies that Tommy is with him. They opt to part ways. As they traverse through the park, they stumble upon Scars mercilessly slaying one of the WLF soldiers. Eventually, their presence becomes known, and Dina is hit by an arrow. Ellie skillfully leads the Scars towards her and manages to conceal herself within a tree. Simultaneously, Jesse escorts Dina to the theater where Ellie and Dina had previously been. When Ellie emerges from the tree, she finds herself near Lakehill Hospital. Impulsively, she enters the hospital without informing Dina.
Did Ellie Finally Begin Her Redemption By Killing [Spoiler]?

Towards the closing scenes of the episode, Ellie makes her way into the hospital structure where she encounters Nora. Attempting to provoke Ellie, Nora accuses her of witnessing Joel’s murder, stating that his death was warranted due to its brutality. Despite her efforts, Nora is unable to flee and summons a pair of WLF soldiers to attack Ellie. However, the soldiers are unwilling to harm her, prompting Ellie to pursue Nora further into the hospital’s basement.
Immediately upon descending into the basement, Ellie encounters the Cordyceps fungus sprawled across the walls and floor. People are pinned to the walls, enveloped by the fungus, with one of them releasing spores. Ellie discovers Nora lying on the ground and learns that they’re inhaling spores and have mere minutes left to live. Despite her alarming circumstances, Ellie remains composed. Nora then discloses that Joel was responsible for killing Abby’s father, who could have potentially developed a cure.
The scene ends as Ellie queries Nora regarding Abby’s location. However, when Nora refuses to disclose this information, Ellie retaliates by striking her repeatedly with a metal rod. Following the dark screen, the audience finds Ellie awakening from slumber, with Joel appearing before her in the subsequent frames.
In simpler terms, the fifth episode of Season 2 of “The Last of Us” is intense, filled with deep emotions, and carries significant themes.
